PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS PEINS oh god i am drowning in them
Okay, I was using my iBook (about a year old) and it started to hang. No big deal, I just power down and start back up right?
Grey screen.
Okay, so I start to freak, power down, let it sit a few minutes. Power up, same.
Get my disks, run the disk utils, says something is wrong with the file system (hangs for a logn time on fixing B Trees and then kicks out with an error.)
Get it to a command prompt, go through my files, make sure I'm not going to lose anything important, insert the OSX install disk (10.3) and go.
Install, get an error at the end, tells me to try again.
WHAT? What the hell is going on?

Just did a hardware test with the disk that came with my system, everything "passed".
Sigh, I'll try reinstalling again...

Not sure what the problem is, and you might know this already, but when you re-install choose 'Archive & Install' and it will keep your home directory so you don't lose any of your music/applications/documents etc.

All the benefits of reinstalling without the pain of losing stuff.

Far too late for that. Its all gone.

Sounds like it's the HDD or controller bit on the motherboard.

If you have Applecare, call Apple tech support and see what they say.

If you don't have Applecare, please remember to buy it for your next Mac. Any repairs done at this point will cost you plenty. You should still call Apple tech support, but don't think you'll get off easy.

Check this link and make sure it is not your logic board (there has been extended warranty/recall on these):

Hmm, I recall reading that before I actually purchaced my iBook, although that was January 2004. Serial number doesn't match up though. Crud.

The Apple Hardware Test came back a-ok...not sure how much I should put into that as OS X is still failing to install.
Downloading a Mandrake distro at the moment, if this installs, well, shit I must have a bad OS X install disc, I guess.

Yeah, I figured at the time I'd get by fine without it. Sigh.
I guess any repair would cost a couple hundred, if I can't get anything going on this machine, I'll just wait until I have the money and get a new powerbook with the extra shit.

If you have an Apple Store nearby, it wouldn't hurt to bring it in & have one of the folks at the Genius Bar take a look at it.

This happened to me last year (I believe).

I run a Powerbook G4 and here was my problem:

One day my comp just freezes up... so... I turn it off and turn to turn it back on... but no. Instead... I'm stuck on the load screen (with the spinning wheel). It doesn't move from there.

Here was the solution:

Run the software that came with the computer (iBook disc? perhaps) and it should provide you with reinstallation of Mac OSX. Now... you are supposed to hold down a certain key while booting... but I forget the key (s?). Once I reinstalled everything work properly and everything was A-OK.

If you have APP... use it and have them fix it. They CLAIM that you are supposed to provide the software... (certain places do) but that is a farce... they should be more than willing to provide you with any software you need. Basically... for safety purposes... bring all your own software when getting it fixed. If you don't have APP... it'll cost you about $100 for them to fix it... but I'm 100% sure you can do this on your own. Lemme know.

I've already tried to install OS X from a clean HD 3 times, and all have failed.

Clostest apple store is apparently in Buffalo, and since I totalled my car in January, that's not going to happen...

Well, another call to the Apple tech supprt, this guy was more helpful than the last, but it looks like I'm gonna look into getting a powerbook with the APP this time.

Darwin has been going for over and hour now and keeps giving "cannot creat symlink to XXX" and "Cannot open XXX" messages..
