MacDonalds/KFC: These newly introduced ticket systems are a nightmare

For me, it always seems there are one or two employees actually collecting the orders. But as they are sometimes being actually cooked, they often have to wait for the kitchen. Meanwhile, a queue rapidly grows. Speaking to the staff, none of them enjoy it and they all agree it adds to the wait time.

Look at the image above. You have about a dozen people waiting for one or two employees to put their orders together, and that single line is ever present as orders continue to come in.

Have you seen them? What's your experience?

Its been like this for a while in Australia.. I thnk its certainly better and much faster this way. I cant say that I go in often enough to really care either way tbh.

I actually find it a lot more efficient.

Although I have never really used them when it is really busy. Big plus I can customize my burger on the machine and do not have to repeat myself over a thousand kids.

Started seeing them recently.
I guess the benefit is that people don't have to wait for other people's long orders to be attended to/undecided people before making their own.

Also staff are dealing with less things, so more time for other things

It's been like this for a couple years now in Holland and I love it. It's way faster. A couple weeks ago there was a huge line at the cash register so I went to the self-order terminal where for some reason no one was standing and I got my order in 2 minutes, while the people in line were still standing there. It's great.

I remember fucking @ Wendy's they were asking everyone what they wanted to name their ticket. Instead of just giving you the next number automatically. It was ridiculous, people had to think of what to name the ticket and then the cashier had to type that shit out.

Seems your issue is less with the ticket system and more with them being understaffed. I don't see what the queue growing has to do with the ticket system tbh.

My local one just got them, they are terrible. Last week I ordered 2 smoothies and it took 15 minutes to get them - I demanded fresh ones when they gave them to me as they had sat on the collect point for the staff for about 10+ minutes.

The issue at mine is they have less staff handing out orders but close to double the lines to order on now, mine used to have 1 express and 5 lines (6 total), now they have 1 express, 3 lines and 7 touch order points (11 total).

I hate the new system and it easily doubled my wait time for orders.

It's great to order on the app and bypass waiting in line just for them to place my order.

Might be that it'll screw up once it gets more popular, but then it's just a case of them having to relocate staff from entering orders to putting them together.

Having someone there to just press the same buttons I could is a huge waste of resources.

Seems quicker in the one I go to. I only go there hungover and wanting a breakfast wrap and they always seem to take the longest time, but seem quicker now. I also don't have tondeal with people, which I appreciate if I'm in a state where I actually want a McDonalds.

Looking at the other replies, seems it's fucking up the larger ones. This is a small train station one so it seems to help there.

This isn't new, this has been what they've always done breh.

Yea I'm confused. Maybe my memory sucks but I don't remember the old way. The ticket system just makes it easier to track and surfaces what's happening with your order slightly.

Unless this is about the self serve stations where you place your order at a kiosk.

I like it, it's not slow at all at the one I go to. Plus I've been able to reuse vouchers with the machine over and over (even if they are expired or not supposed to be used), they only once asked me to hand it in when collecting my order. Also I don't have to talk to anyone.

Have at this system at Maccas and KFC here in Australia for ages and it all seems to work fine. Nicer to know it's being made or is ready over needing to listen for your whole order being recited over a noisy crowd.

Number + screen > "one mcchicken, two cheeseburgers, one no pickles, three large cokes, chocolate sundae"

Had an experience in KFC with this ticket system. Was stupid. Instead of calling the number out the guy called out the meals. I ordered mine with a water and thought I'd be unique with this. Nope. Some guy walks up and takes my order. Then I have to wait longer for him to sort out my actual order cause I don't want that other guys shitty choice of KFC food. Haha shit system

The Argos of fast food innit?

They're pretty new in the UK, my local branch introduced it about a month ago.

They need to sort the voucher system out. Once it wiped one of my vouchers so I couldn't use it and I've yet to get out working with a monopoly prize sticker.

This system plus the self serve checkout are great, order at self serve and your order appears in front of everyone who are still queuing up

Experienced this for the first time a couple of weeks ago at a McDonald's in Brixton. The whole thing went really smoothly and got my food no slower than with a normal system.

First time I've ever seen security guards at a McDonald's though

They're having trouble with the youth. I think it's mostly after school time since school kids would just come and hang out for hours.

What you do is, on the kiosk select voucher on the top right before you order, then select what you won on the menu and it will show at zero cost - then place the order and just hand the voucher to the staff when they give you the food.

So is this like WaWa where you go in and touch a screen to place your order?

I haven't personally seen this yet, but I can't remember the last time I was in either a McDs or KFC.

They suck. Go in for sth to drink or a cookie or so? Fuck you, here's your ticket. If only it made big orders faster, but in my experience that's ALSO not the case.

Tried it a few times and now any place that uses those doesn't get my business anymore. Ain't nobody got time for that.

why would you go to a restaurant just for a drink or a cookie though.

Corporations hate employing more people. Making the ones they have multi-task and make them unhappier with the workload.

How are McDicks and KFC restaurants? They're fast good joints. Also why wouldn't I? When I walk home from "Downtown" they're just on my way home. Sometimes I just crave a cookie or a Coke and don't give a fuck that technically I overpaid for them by not going to a supermarket instead.

I like how you're so resolute with the use of "joint" there. They're fast food restaurants.

There shouldn't be a problem with this, many other places do the same or similar. Most carryout (non-fast food) places do if you think about it, there's just not a #, rather they call out your order when it's ready. I think it's because the concept is new to the employee's and customers. If the problem is a dining room filling up waiting for orders to be gathered, then remove a cashier and have them bag items too, etc.

Oh please. Any place where the first question after placing your order (actually having to place the order at a counter is the first sign) is "do you want to eat here or is this for takeout" isn't a restaurant.

Hahaha. You for real?

Not a fan of the ticket system at all. Seems clumsy and badly implemented.

Was in McDonalds in Coatbridge yesterday and they had a bouncer on the door and were offering table service!!

Crazy times

Not a fan of it either, everything takes longer, is more annoying and I don't think the food is as hot either ever since this new system.

Honestly I've stopped going to McDonalds since the new system, it's not worth the hassle for what ends up being food with barely any heat in them. I've gone to multiple different McDonalds with this new system and it's all the same, so it's not a specific issue with one.

Being from the UK, I didn't realise why drive-thus were so useful. It's not that you don't have to get out of the car, it's that your order is rushed, while the people inside have to wait. Oh, and it doesn't smell bad like the inside.

If there's a drive-thru I now use it every time. So much faster.

We've had this for some time in Australia. You don't have to stand in line. You can just stand a bit away and you can still see your number on screen when it's ready.

I thought GAFers only drank water and cooked all their meals at home from scratch. The illusion is shattered.

I love it. Experienced it in the UK, Amsterdam and Japan and it's much better than the alternative (ignoring the drive thru since I don't drive).

The alternative which I'm all too familiar with (and is mainly bad during the busy hours) is to stand and wait at the til until your order is ready while they continue to take even more orders causing a bit of a cluster fuck at the tills.

With the ticket system, once you have your ticket, you can just step out of line and sit around (as long as you can see the screen with the numbers on it) and wait for your number to be shown. Once it is, you just go up and get it, no hassle, no standing around while people push to get at the person going "Next please" (or some variation of it).

It's a better system to me.
