Kawamori explicitly stated in an interview that Alto's not dead (and goes back to Sheryl) and Sheryl wakes up from her coma. He was apparently surprised that people thought the movie had a sad ending.
How the fuck was he surprised by that? It's not Anno territory, but this was sad for me since I love those two together and actually wanted what he said in the interview to happen on screen. So did Issamu die in that big laser fire?

If you like Alto and Sheryl I would recommend you to read this interview :
https://karice.wordpress.com/2013/04/05/p303/
What would Sheryl and Altos married life be like!? Rankas romance, Klan and Michels after the end and more. Undisclosed until now, the director reveals many details about the private and love lives of the Macross Frontier characters!
I think Sheryl would be fine for the most part. She'd only really be like that in my opinion cause she's afraid of being alone. Alto saw a much different side to Sheryl than everybody else and I'd think she'd only really be like that with him. She loves the dude. Though yeah, explaining to Sheryl that you aren't with her currently cause you're trying not to get shot down would be a pain in the ass. I'd actually recommend the movies garbage ending aside. I actually enjoyed them. Sheryl gives the best concerts and I actually like how Ranka and Sheryl just seem to have very different energies to their concerts. Sheryl's are pretty much super charged with raw sexual intensity and Ranka's have more of an air of innocence to them. The second movie has a bit of a Fire Bomber tribute as well, probably Ozma's idea.
Yeah I liked that part. They really went out of their way to make that Captain pretty cool, I also like how that's the first Captain I can think of to date one of their bridge bunnies. Max's crew loved him, but he couldn't marry one cause Miria would probably just decapitate one of them in their sleep, separated or not. Frontier gets hate on here for no reason in my opinion. Even after so many years later it's still a very very enjoyable series. I might hit up Plus this weekend, depends on my mood. Oh yeah SMS vs the Delta people in a dogfight who would win?
Sheryl and Alto met when they were children, and basically set each other on their own paths, you gotta believe that they were meant for each other even if their relation isn't meant to be an easy one.
Otoh I found very surprising they were even remotely toying (in interviews and with Kiss in the Galaxy) with the Ranka / Brera pairing... Quite icky.
Now wether you think the series ending -or- the movie ending are canon is another thing.
I don't know if there's an official take (Kawamori's) on it, but I could see, just like for DYRL, the movie being the "official" in-universe adaptation of the real (series) events. I would also not be surprised if (in universe) Sheryl would have DEMANDED her role be made more interesting by making her a
Galaxy spy working with Grace, instead of being manipulated
.
Edit: SMS vs Delta, SMS any time imo. They have Isamu, and besides being a complete dick the guy is OP as fuck.
I'm convinced Walkure would be too distracted by one of Sheryl's concerts to be able to put their full attention towards producing fold waves, not to mention Sheryl and Ranka could do the same thing if I'm not mistaken. Miria in Macross 7 proved that the pilot is more important than the machinery. Her in her VF-1J if I'm not mistaken owned a lot of the higher tech VF-14's. It only got destroyed cause Gamlin got in the god damn thing and got it destroyed cause he wasn't as good as her.

I think Sheryl and Alto have a strong enough bond to be able to work their shit out. They do seem to live for each other in a way and they seem to bring out the best in each other. Besides towards the end it was Sheryl's singing that woke Alto out of his nose dive and not Ranka's. Sheryl just likes to push the dudes buttons, cause somebody has to, but I have no doubt she loves him. I've always thought of Ranka as their little sister and reading Kawamori saying the same thing was nice to see. They love each other, but Alto's feelings for Ranka are just different. They're every bit as intense, but he just doesn't wish for a relationship like that with Ranka. Regarding the thing with Grace. I can see Sheryl demanding that just so Grace wouldn't leave her to be honest. Grace more or less is Sheryl's mother as twisted as she is and Grace, when she isn't being manipulated does care for Sheryl, moreso in my opinion than the Grace in the tv show.
My fucking god Delta, stop torturing Mirage please, like please, this shit is just heart breaking...
I haven't even seen the ep entirely and I don't think a Valk has enough thrust to propel her vehicle and that massive ass L through space. I feel so god damn bad for her.
So like Mirage has a birthday the fucking day before Freyja's and nobody is even trying to celebrate that shit. They haven't even acknowledged the woman's birthday. Both Freyja and Hayate would be dead if Mirage didn't save them 2 episodes prior to this shit. "But but my birthday is to..." "Shut the fuck up and get Freyja a present Mirage!!!" "Ok." Poor woman. Damn Mirage can dress, she's got a nice shopping outfit. She's so pissed off at Hayate right now. Aww Hayate bought Mirage some ice cream. I wonder how much fan art is going to come from Mirage eating ice cream. God Bless You was a good song, but poor Mirage, just...damn. She had to help plan and still be there for this party when nobody really seems to give two shits about her really. She's just Hayate's friend and shield for Walkure.
got friend-zoned hardcore on this one.
On one hand, I feel bad for her, but on the other, the writers really messed her character bad so far.
What does she have to grab the interest of Hayate?
It's like every time they are together she does her darnedest to appear as dull and lifeless as she possibly can... They also made her into a barely above average pilot, and without any special skill/ interest to make her seem more mysterious (Mikumo at least has that going for her on top of singing).
Freyja is very immature in comparison, but also talented (singing), and more importantly a ton of fun... If they're going to have an actual love triangle in this show, the writers need to do something with Mirage fast (there's like 9 episodes left, with traditionally the plot ramping up toward the final conflict pretty soon with "an important discovery"), because right now that triangle looks like a line tbh...
Yeah Mirage as a character seems like a ruined opportunity. They've barely developed her so far. This is even worst than Ranka at this point. I'd like them to dedicate a couple episodes for Mirage but I won't get my hopes up at this point.
You know guys thank you. Sometimes I think it's just me that thinks they screwed the pooch with writing Mirage but it's true. She's technically what Misa was before she loosened up, but they loosened her up. Mirage is just dull and they don't want to really do anything with her. They got Gamlin and Misa so right but they tripped up with Mirage I'm so sad. I honestly think Mirage is all kinds of emotionally reserved. She has them but she can't really emote. I'm not sure if it's shell shock or bad parenting
They need to take the giant stick out of her ass first. She's probably a really fun person but she can't show it to save her life. This is almost as bad as when they kept giving Sakura screen time in Naruto over Hinata.
Freyja may die and even if she doesn't, she can only live to 30. So he'll probably end up with Mirage, but she's not going to get anywhere if she doesn't start being honest with Hayate. Like Mirage, Misa was pretty tough on Hikaru, she also didn't receive as much development as Minmei.

If you compare Misa from the beginning to around after they got captured by the Zentradei she grew a lot. I honestly think she loosened up for Hikaru and Hikaru grew up for her. Minmay needed to do the most growing because she was super immature. Mirage just seems to keep herself stagnant. I honestly wouldn't mind if she had an emotional explosion over Hayate cause nobody seems to know how she feels about anything.
Macross is truly the only series where the best girl/guy always wins. Good episode though, and at this point I'm fairly comfortable saying that this is better than the Frontier TV series (which I actually liked so I'm not shitting on it).

I'm going to need actually marathon Delta to determine if I like it better than Frontier. I honestly just like Frontier's cast better. They all had their unique quirks, in Delta you're either, boring, you sing or you're Hayate. Freyja's not even the best girl, she's just the default since they didn't know how to write Mirage's character. The moment where a valk lights a cigarette for a zentradei is still hilarious.

It's a matter of taste really, but to me it's not even close. Frontier is the far better show.
Sheryl/ Alto/ Ranka (specially Sheryl, but Alto was also a solid and original MC) were real MVPs, SMS had real pilots, music wasn't garbage sung by an idol band, the battle scenes were more numerous and better choreographed (there's been 1 good one in Delta in 16 episodes so far), the Klan/ Michael relation was awesome, etc etc.
Delta doesn't seem to make sense on so many level, it's crazy, but the show not being over, it's possible there is a ton of exposition coming our way...
If this thing really is supposed to mirror Hikaru-Misa-Minmay then Mirage has a lot more shit she needs to eat before this thing is finished. I almost forgot how much shit Misa ate before Hikaru wised up and chose her. Then again Misa didn't exactly lie down and take it the way Mirage is. She actually did things and you could tell by their conversations that there was genuinely something there. Hikaru was just being Hikaru and held onto a crush and didn't exactly put Minmay in her place. I honestly think Hikaru and Misa had the more mature conversations and opened up to each other more. I think there was a lot of stuff Misa never really told anybody else other than Hikaru. I'm getting that sense with Mirage and Hayate as well, but there's that sweetness that Freyja has that Hayate gravitates too, Mirage, she either just doesn't have that or at the very least doesn't know how to let her guard down. She just seems very insular. Though granted Mirage and Misa both come from military families so those two were doomed from the start. At the very least I don't think Mirage had a fiance die on her like Misa. We all know that wrecked her good, though the real question is has Mirage felt anything for another person? She did state love isn't her forte and probably has never really been on a date before. People are probably just intimidated by her last name and just never really give her a long term shot. I guess I just want Mirage to get some happiness cause I can actually relate to her.

Yes!! Another person that likes Frontier more. That show gets so much unneeded hate. I honestly think Hayate's been the worst main regarding his ship. Hikaru didn't know exactly when to make his decision so he let it drag on too long, but at the same time he knew both Minmay and Misa loved him, I just don't think he knew exactly which love was more important to him. He had his infatuation with Minmay while he had the more organic love for Misa blossoming long term in the background, for like years actually. Alto in my opinion was just either too afraid or stubborn and just tried not to make a choice, but even he had to fess up to loving Sheryl. I honestly just think Hayate is too emotionally dense to know what anything really is and it took this episode to figure out something with Freyja. Now when it comes to Mirage? She's wound up tight as fuck. I honestly do hope they explain her some more. She's clearly got feelings, she's just awkward and afraid of actually expressing the damn things. But this ep did show that A) Mirage don't fuck around and keeps her shit on point. She does her task whether it's in her best interest or not, she's professional. She could've fucked up the planning for Freyja's party, but she didn't. B) Mirage can fucking dress and she dresses like an adult. She doesn't show too much skin, but she keeps it tasteful. She's an honest woman and she's loyal. I honestly don't even think Hayate's even mature enough for her. Hikaru wasn't mature enough for Misa in the beginning either, it took time, but they both changed for each other.
She'll likely get some happiness in the sense that her on-the-fucking-floor self esteem will rise up and she will become a very capable leader and pilot after being inspired by Hayate. Probably might end up fighting the ace while Hayate and Freya fight like the Akira blob monster last boss this show is bound to have.
You don't introduce a character that has a 30 year life span and NOT have her be the winning romantic interest though. You have any idea how much they can milk a flashforward scene of him like laying flowers on her grave with their baby twins coming with him? One has like a jet plane tentacle or some shit.
Geeze my friend who owns a bar and is obsessed with Macross has switched his place into almost full blown anime bar. Walkure's album on repeat, playing videos and clips all night.
Best part though everyone says they hate it at first then after a few times hearing it they are like "I woke up the next day singing those songs, this is my shit now" haha. Infecting everyone.

Also, you have to account for 2 things:
1)Misa from the get go is a consumate professional, and in spite of a tense start, Hikaru admired her and respected her.
Gamlin was also top in his own game (recognized even by Miria).
Mirage... Let's just say that the way they portray it Hayate is a 3 months noob who is already just as good as she is, if not better (and that's before the OP "Freyja song from the heart" upgrade, when Hayate can compete with the White Knight from Windermere.)
2) Even with that, the opening of the relation between Rick and Hikaru was very progressive, starting around ep7.
Right now, there's nothing we can see between Hayate and Mirage.
My prediction: if they're going to push for a real triangle, somehow Mirage and Hayate will be trapped together but isolated from everybody else within 2-3 eps.

You have no idea how much Mirage being Kakizaki tier is pissing me off. I do find it funny that with as big as the SDF1 was Misa and Hikaru always bumped into each other. They were sort of rocky, but eventually her actual personality came out and it did help straighten Hikaru out. Hikaru never rushed his feelings with Misa the way he did with Minmay, they actually grew at an organic rate. They knew each other for how many years? Four? Almost died together a couple of times, he saved her a lot, he got to see a lot of her flaws and unlike most people he really stopped being intimidated by her. They really were best friends first, then they fell in love. Mirage? Mirage is just like a ship mate to Hayate it seems like. He does care for her in his own way, but I really don't think Hayate even has an idea of what way that is since he's like Shinji Ikari dense. I actually hope Mirage gets a few isolation eps. Her character really does need it badly. We learned so much about Misa when it was just her hanging with Hikaru while stranded. They didn't even keep their friendship private since while on the god damn bridge they would either joke around over the radio or Misa would wish Hikaru good luck and to come back safe...then it just spirals into "Misa dafuq are you doing" and she's washing his dishes or cleaning his place while he's away and Hikaru's still sort of not committing cause of Minmay and you want to smack the guy upside his god damn head. Though at the same time she gave Hikaru his emotional space and never smothered him. Though there were moments where it got a bit tense with those two. "Hey Misa I'm hugging Minmay here, I'm not going on some mission." "Fine I'll pilot the fucking thing for you and die in the process. See. I'm going to die wearing your fucking helmet." "Shit Misa fine I'll fly the mission."
They knocked her ass down and then they just kept on kicking her. "uh uh it's my birthday to..." "Get Freyja a gift." "Ok." Nobody even acknowledged that shit and with the exception of Hayate they all knew Mirage longer. They didn't even think to say anything to her during her birthday. The ep was just sad. It kind of just seems like nobody noticed her unless it was Messer calling her out for flying like shit.
Haven't seen this since that episode they were all undercover and getting some info on the enemy in like ep 6/7, has it gotten much better since that episode?

The fucking glance-back-look-away by Arad when he noticed Kaname there. Goddamn, I really hope things go well for these two.
On Mirage, I actually quite like her despite wanting Freyja to win, so seeing her suffering doesn't feel good. Especially since she has the double suffering of both the triangle and the Jenius heritage. At least the latter has a possible good end somewhere eventually maybe, and it's nice how they continue to move that along, like how she subtlety brings it up when cheering up Hayate this episode.

It's nice to see not only me have same feeling.
Other than this episode, all Mirage getting is being a stepping stone for Hayate and Freyja.
Lose the triangle? fine, but where the hell is her development for being a good pilot? it's 16 episodes already and we still getting nothing.
Also episode 16's writer was never wrote any Macross Delta's episode til now, and the fact that this writer was Idol Master 2011's writer, i believe that's the reason why Mirage having better development in this episode(and in this episode, Mirage remind me im@s 2011's Chihaya Kisaragi btw), problem is other than this writer, all other writers keep give me the message is "we love to bully her", and i'm not sure will episode 16's character going to write more episodes.
Anyway, this reply from /a/ 100% fits what i am thinking right now.

It's like they figured out "we've been shitting on the Minmay for almost 40 years. I got it, let's shit on the Misa. We'll make her bland as fuck cause nobody likes Misa in Japan any way right, we don't even have merchandise for her that sells. The audience will love it." I loved Misa, she's like my OG waifu and seeing Mirage's treatment is painful. Imagine if her and Freyja actually got along. She's like Gamlin, but with none of the development. Sheryl, not even Ranka would accept this type of treatment.
First game announced! Almost certainly Artdink, looks like the HUD from 30. If it's just going to be Delta though it will probably be oddly barebones for an Artdink game not packaged with a movie.
