Mad Men - Season 6 - Sundays on AMC

Rewatched the season finale and I just had a thought. Did anyone notice how utterly vicious Peggy's face got when Ted said he had to talk to her? I mean when she explodes with "Did you tell her? I told you not to tell her!" line. The way her face contorted into some hideous beast was actually pretty freaky. I didn't think Peggy had that kind of bile in her.

It makes me fear for her future underlings. I stand firm in my belief that she's hit the glass ceiling and will be middle management from here on out, but I can see her taking out her frustrations with her life and her job on her poor underlings. I think that was our first taste of Super Bitch Peggy.

Think you are looking way too much into this, she just feels like her personal life is in shambles (which it is) she literally cannot find true love, and she feels that the clock is ticking agaisnt her, (When Pete's mom mistakes her for Trudy few episodes back and says something about their son, she pauses and almost wishes it was true, even after the "excuse me!?!") since she focused almost all of her energy on her career the five years or so.

She is great at her job and even better with her coworkers granted she has an active partner in life. (when shes's happy) It's totally not her style to dress up and go out around town, she's never done such things before, and never had to.

She is totally becoming caught up in Ted and thus making some really stupid decisions (dressing up and pretending to have hot dates) she just needs to calm down and start over with her personal life/ dating and stay the fuck away from her boss/co-workers in that regard.

Anyway, her character is a great study of a workaholic woman trying to balance her life while building a career for herself agaisnt all odds / a male dominated world.

I totally agree with you on hitting the ceiling bit though.

Since i'm in the mood for great Mad Men episode endings, the season 5 ending with Nancy Sinatra singing "You only live twice" is also in my top-list. Absolutely love how don just turn and looks at her and SCENE.

So good

Good to see other people praising this scene. Simply amazing, probably my favourite Mad Men scene of them all.

The finale was great, wasn't expecting any of that to go down, but now looking back at the rest of the season it made perfect sense for things to end like that. With the flashback scenes and Don's apathy towards the agency.

I loved all the ideas Don pitched in the client meetings this season too, they were clearly too ahead of their time which seems to be what Matt Weiner was going for.

So excited to see what direction the final series will go in. Thank goodness I have Breaking Bad to look forward to before next year.

My season rankings:

4 = 6 > 5 > 3 > 1 > 2

While I'm not sure I agree with the criticism, she didn't say it glorified adultery. The two ideas are not necessarily synonymous.

Ted's a dick btw. Don't know how you can take those events as making him out to be decent.

I hope it's as amazing -- and controversial -- as The Sopranos' final shot.
What was she referring to? Don and Ted cheating on their respective partners seemed like the biggest example of what his GF was upset at.

Yeah the ending made Ted look pretty decent. Also does your girlfriend not realize that the things depicted in the show are things that were rampant in the era the show takes place in? I mean she had to know from the get go. Seems odd that now would be too much.

Especially considering the season finale was more hopeful than Mad Men has ever been IMO. And I mean that for a lot characters. For Joan, For Peggy (career wise), for Don, for Ted, etc...

Not in my eyes. He got to sample Peggy and still keep his family. He got the best of both worlds.

So my girlfriend said the it is just too much sadness and has refused to do a re-watch with me since watching the finale.

"I hate this show. It just continues to glorifies men walking all over women."

She does have somewhat of a point but...I don't know how she got this far along in the show to just now feel that way.

Maybe it was the Ted storyline. She really liked Ted because she saw him as one of the few virtuous men on the show.

Men certainly did walk all over women, but it was hardly glorified.

This is true.

The show is based in the 1960's. If his girlfriend didn't think women were being walked over, then something would be wrong. It's true to the period. It's interesting to see the evolution of women in the workforce throughout the seasons, as well. You can subtly see the changes for the better with each new season.

Rewatching the Freddie firing episode, and how Don is so unusually protective over a colleague brings it home just how good this show is.

Pretty sad that Don's partners couldn't provide the same good attitude to him. They were very cold and ruthless.

bitch I'm taking calls.
It turns out that the commentary had more to do with real life issues rather than the show. Bad timing for Mad Men.
The Hershey's pitch is up on youtube;

I think I've re-watched it 5 times by now. Hits me so hard.

"It was the only sweet thing in my life..."

Such an insanely good scene. Definitely in my top 5.

finally got round to watching the finale. i liked don getting fired a lot, wasn't expecting it and it was richly deserved.

wasn't a fan of that series much in general, it's definitely my least favourite so far. looking over the episodes there's nothing i really want to revisit. felt like the show has stretched itself so thin with all the characters. i know it's always been a collection of short stories, but here it felt more like a bunch of fragments, i never really felt satisfied with the stories they told, so many characters were largely missing and there was very little interesting happening to scores more. the two stories that bucked that were don and pete's neither of which i enjoyed; don felt like a retread of old themes with awful flashbacks and i'm really bewildered by much of what happened with pete and bob benson, seemed really pointless and pete's over threatricalness was ramped up the point of caricature. i didn't like how we barely got to see the fallout from him and trudy breaking up which was a highlight of the series. there was also so much death in the series i was expecting it to mean something but nope. i normally like to rewatch the previous series before the next one starts so hopefully it strikes me more then but i'm left a bit dissapointed really.

There's still a season to go, you know.

I feel somewhat similarly. There were still some fantastic and emotionally wrenching scenes, but this season felt more disjointed and off point compared to prior ones.

I feel like this entire season has been build for and putting pieces in place for the finale season. It didn't feel like it had a contained story like other seasons, but more set-up and character advancing occurred to prepare us for the finale. Pete's mom dying on the boat was interesting and I'm curious what effect if any this will have on Pete going forward. I'm surprised nothing else happened to the main cast...but all the imagery in this season could have been building to a more violent NYC landscape in season 7. The final image of Don taking his kids to a "bad neighborhood" to see this run down house where he used to live might be fitting for things to come. As NYC crashes, Don will finally rise and become truthful about who he is and maybe change for the better.

yeah hopefully i'll find it more enjoyable when i see how it fits into the overall picture

though doesn't weiner always say that he only thinks about the current season when writing (i haven't read any interviews with him recently so this might have changed now the end is closing in)

I was on vacation during the last two episodes and I'm sad I couldn't participate in the discussion. :(

bob Godsen is the best character ever imagined and I'm surprised that Pete was willing to tolerate him. And Pete was rational when it came to finding his mothers body.

I LOL when I saw the synopsis of the finale, and Don is in suck a fucked up state. I hope Meghan has left him when next season starts. It was great seeing Glenn and Sally get drunk, I felt so bad for her, she seems completely directionless with no one to properly care for her. I'm glad glen saved the day. I feel bad for Peggy but in some way it's the best thing for both of them.

I'm glad that they are giving Don a break, he needs one. I just loved the lighting in that shot, so natural compares to the harsh white that it usually shows.

I really don't have anymore thoughts right now.

I wonder if they'll give Hamm the Emmy for this year or next year. Because they have to give him at least one for his seven seasons on this show. It would be such a massive snub if he didn't get an Emmy by the end.

he'll definitely get one, they'll probably save it for the final season though.

tbh he deserves it over bryan cranston this time for sure. nobody in breaking bad season 5.0 was special.

5.5 will probably be a much different story though.

He wasn't fired.

wasn't that his replacement coming in the door with duck though

i mean yeah he was put on indefinite leave but i read it as him being forced out, they just couldn't straight up fire a partner

edit: completly beaten by guess who. i should read more.

Has their been any word of the series moving to LA for the last season? At least part time? I could see Don going ahead and re-locating after being put on leave like that.

So I'm not reading any posts since this thread is obviously spoiler-ridden, but I'm catching up on Mad Men since I never had the time to watch it. Just finished season 1. The entire season was pretty slow but the last few episodes the pace picked up and some cool stuff happened(the season finale especially was great).

A few notes:
- Man, people smoked and drank a lot in the sixties, goddamn.
- This show is making me hate all men, so much adultery and general assholiness
- Don is a great character already
- Christina Hendriks is not only hot, but also great in her role
- Alison Brie is hotter
- Dat season finale
- So much adultery

Two questions:
1. How the hell did Peggy not know
she was pregnant for so long?
Spoiler tag seems unnecessary but whatever.
2. Do the next seasons pick up the pace some more? I'm okay with slow and steady but it does get tiring sometimes.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
I'm probably alone here, but I liked last year's finale more. I thought this was good too, but the final 10 or so minute last year were just amazing. But we already knew this was going to be a transition season, getting everything and everyone in place for the final bow.

1. Peggy is naive to the world. She just wasn't very tuned into her body. Sex education wasn't exactly the best back then, coupled with her being in denial.

2. Hmm. Good question. It's a character drama. Maybe give some Season 2 episodes a taste, but you've pretty much seen how it goes down. It's all about relationships, office politics, and personal growth and destruction.

I find the show riveting. I never understood the slow argument.
