Hello, GAF! This is the OT and recruitment thread for GAF mafia, also known as werewolf. We have come to call our little community GAFia (thanks to swamped and retro) and we'd love to have you join us and play our game of treachery and shenanigans

GAF now has a thriving mafia community with over 50 active players - and we're looking to make it over 100. GAF mafia works on a seasonal basis. Each season, we start a new batch of games, with a new batch of game-runners, each game having a different set of roles and flavour. Currently, we're taking sign-ups for Season 4.5 - and we want you to take part! It's a fun game and a great way to meet new friends on GAF. We're extra friendly to new players.

Signing up is simple. Just post in this thread saying you want to take part, and you'll be put on the sign-up list. We have priority weighting based on play time from the last seasons so if you are new, you are guaranteed to have a good chance to play!

Don't worry if you miss sign-ups - you'll be added to the waiting list, which gives you priority next season. Some players also find they can't keep up and have to drop out, which means replacements are drawn from the waiting list, so you may still get to play this season!

GAF Mafia has a gender pronoun policy. Because players have to refer to each other throughout the game and we don't want to misgender anyone, we'd like to know your preferred personal pronoun - be it he, she, they, ze or any other. Other players will refer to you by that pronoun, and this will be carefully enforced. We'd also like you to respect the other players by being careful to use their chosen personal pronoun too. You are free not to disclose your preferred pronoun, in which case other players will refer to you as they - but please do tell us if you're choosing not to disclose, as if you try to sign-up without telling us, then we have to assume that you've not read this and we can't sign you up.

Be aware GAF Mafia is a significant time commitment. Ordinary games last about two months, although some special cases will be different (if so, this information will be in the games list). You will need to post at least once or twice a day, although we understand if you have to miss one every now and then. Please don't sign-up unless you can do this.

Most GAF games follow the same ruleset, and vary only in the number of players (approximately 18-27) and the roles and flavour used. Because of that, you'll be randomly assigned to a particular game-runner and their game. We make sure the ratio of new to established players is roughly the same between all the games in a season. However, some games will vary significantly enough from the basic ruleset that you can't be randomly assigned to them - they will be opt-in. If a game is opt-in, it'll be marked clearly in the games list, so if you want to play in that particular game, just say so.

In Season Four, you will be able to nominate your preferences but there are no guarantees that you will be assigned to any specific games. Please bear in mind that you are signing up to a game of Mafia and we advise you not to place too much stock on to the specific flavour the games are carrying.

Anyone who has completed at least one GAF Mafia game can apply to become a game-runner, but a condition is that they must stick around for the next season to help the next batch of game-runners with their design. If at any point you need help or have a question to ask, please contact any of game-runner or tutor (but you'll probably get the fastest response if you contact the one who is the game-runner for the game you are in).

A little introduction to mafia.

| Part 1 - the Basics |

Hello, all! First and foremost: mafia is really, really easy to learn. You can learn the rules by the game's first "turn" and be a pro by the end of your first game. New players are welcomed, and I hope you join myself and other GAF players after reading this. The vast majority of our players had their first mafia games here, too!

Mafia is a game about lying, and detecting lies. Invented in 1986 as Ма́фия in the U.S.S.R. by Dmitry Davidoff, mafia is a party-game with a rather morbid turn. In mafia's most basic form, players are assigned by the game-runner to one of two alignments: the majority to the Town, and the minority to the Mafia (known as the Werewolves in some versions). If a player is assigned to the Town, they know only their own alignment. If a player is assigned to the Mafia, they know the alignments of the other players assigned to the Mafia too. The alignment of everyone else remains a mystery.

The game alternates between a Day Phase and a Night Phase. During the Day Phase, all living players discuss and vote on who will be lynched. When the majority vote for a player, that player is lynched and are dead and out of the game. The game then enters the Night Phase, where the Mafia discuss and choose a kill, informing the game-runner when they've done so. The game-runner then starts the next Day Phase and announces which player was killed.

Town wins by lynching all the Mafia. Mafia win when they are equal to or outnumber Town.

| Part 2 - Additions |

If you got through the above, you're ready to play mafia. Congratulations! However, mafia is an infinitely flexible game. The rule-set described above is the 'core' of mafia, the simplest it can be, and is called 'Basic' or 'Mountainous' mafia. However, most mafia is played with the introduction of new roles, alignments, and mechanics.

For example, most games have Town Power Roles, which have abilities aside from just voting. The most common Town Power Role is the Cop. This player counts as a Town Villager (the ordinary role) in almost every respect - they start the game not knowing the mafia, and win when there are no mafia left - but have an extra ability: each Night Phase, they can select one person to Investigate. The game-runner then tells them if the player they Investigated is Innocent (Town) or Guilty (Mafia). This is a powerful but intuitive role found in many games.

That's not all! There are protective roles, like the Doctor, who can select one player each Night Phase to be immune from kills for that night; third-party roles, like the Lyncher, who wins if they can lynch a specific target; mafia power roles, like the Godfather, who appears as Innocent when Investigated; and so on. The core rules themselves can even vary, with Nightless setups (a Day Phase is followed by another Day Phase) popular in the mafia community.

This is means you play to your tastes - a game can be batshit crazy with many bizarre roles, or it can be the simple Mountainous.

| Part 3 - Flavour |

Mafia isn't just restricted to the mafia! The game's theme is infinitely customizable. You may have wondered about the mention of Werewolves earlier - this is because the second most common version of the game simply calls the Mafia "the Werewolves". This theme extends to all the other roles - the Cop becomes the "Seer", and the Doctor the "Priestess".

This flavouring is also important to another part of mafia: the death scenes. When a player is killed during the Night Phase, the game-runner informs the other how they died, in full and gory detail. After all, how could we sleep at night without knowing that the player Geoff Keighly, with the Town-aligned role of Dorito Pope, died at the hands of a sabotaged Grifbal that rendered his wounds unhealable even to the Mountain Dew elixir? Don't be afraid to experiment!

Mafia games can range from adhering to its most rigid set up to the most rules-buckling non-standard games. To help you understand what you are signing up for, here are some basic terminologies (paraphrased from CzarTim):

Closed Game: You do not know any roles as you go in the game
Open Game: You know what roles are in play as you go in the game
Semi-Open Game: You know what roles could be in the game
Bastard Game: You know nothing and everything can happen and you will hate the moderator in great gust of fury and helplessness

Furthermore, a game can have additional mechanic that may affect the level of potential shenanigans :> We scale our GAFia games in the following categories:

I also want to make our bastard system more precise, so here is a scale:

1: This is classic mafia - only vanilla scum and town, and normal mechanics.
2: This is an open game (all roles present in the game are revealed) with traditional roles.
3: This is an open game (all roles present in the game are revealed) with some non-traditional roles.
4: This is a semi-open game (all roles present come from a pre-revealed list, but not all roles on the list are necessarily present) with traditional roles.
5: This is a closed game (no roles aside from vanilla town and vanilla mafia are known) with traditional roles. When Death is On the Line (my season 1 game) is an example of this.
6: This is a closed game (no roles aside from vanilla town and vanilla mafia are known) with some non-traditional roles. A Wretched Hive of Scum and Villainy (MattAttack's season 2 game) is an example of this.
7: This is a closed game with some non-traditional roles and non-traditional mechanics that nevertheless don't fundamentally deviate too far from the mafia norm. Making Animal Friends is Awesome! (Karkador's season 2 game) is an example of this, as is Ourobolus's season 3 Archer game.
8: This is a role madness game which where traditional mechanics are employed (or only slight deviations), but everyone or almost everyone has a role and these roles are not necessarily restricted to the normal set of roles.
9: This is a closed game with some non-traditional roles and non-traditional mechanics that very fundamentally change it from how mafia would normally be expected to work and require very different approaches to play. LaunchpadMcQ's season 3 Danganronpa game and traube's season 3 Cthulhu game are examples of this.
10: This is a total madness game where every player has a role, these roles are not necessarily traditional and there are strong non-standard mechanics.
11: This is a full bastard game. You are all in the Matrix. This scale is merely an attempt by your deeper subconscious to expand your epistemological uncertainty to a ground where you can make conclusions on existentialism and the state of your reality. The moderators are lying to you. Your win condition is meaningless and probably a lie. What does it even mean to "win" in life? Do we have a purpose? Trust nobody. Eat the red pill.

As a clarification, any role or combination of roles which introduces "untruths" by the moderator is non-traditional. E.g., the Godfather (reveals Innocent on Cop reports) is non-traditional because it involves the moderator giving false information to the Cop (although the Godfather and the Miller are probably the tamest examples of this).

All the games potentially running for Season 4 has self-categorized themselves under this guideline. When you are signing up, you may nominate which game would suit you best, according to the game's category and flavour.

And when I think about it... if anyone has any experience in that regard - in regards to the timezones, is it even possible to play as a European effectively? How do the deadlines line up? (Since the days can be quite long according to the OP, I guess it doesn't matter all that much? On the old forums, I remember the deadlines being quite short)

We do have a rule about not communicating with other players outside of the main threads. We keep a pretty good honor code around here. Editing in forums is against the rules, and is even disabled in some of the off-site games. The off-site forums are protected as well, to prevent possible cheating.

To answer your actual question, yes, it's all either here or in our off-site forum. (Where mafia and other chats are held.)

I can't speak personally to playing as a European, but we do have several European players who have been active for multiple games. I'm sure one of them will be better able to answer your questions in that regard.

The game publicly plays out only in a GAF thread. Private threads (Mafia, Lovers, etc) are hosted off-site, but everything is said in full view of the moderator. Using anything from outside those two places is strictly against the rules. We have friendly games here.

We have a sizable European population in this community, and they do very well. Day phases run for four real-life days, so there is plenty of time to catch up on what's going on. Things often heat up at the very end of a phase and some players can miss it, but that's not a problem exclusive to Europeans.

I'm in the UK and have been able to play in every game I've been in fine. The deadlines are usually late evening so its fine on that front.

You will probably play a bit more reactionary compared to American players (reacting to things that happened while you were asleep instead of back and forth discussion), but there is often a period at the end of the day were both Europeans and Americans are online for a bit. The day ends are mostly around 9-12 pm for me (gmt +1)

Wow...I'm sure that was fun in it's own way, but that sounds like a nightmare to me. The GAF games are hosted as threads in the Off Topic Community, and no game-related talk is allowed outside it. We aren't allowed to post screenshots of our role PMs or anything like that either (the rules will be posted in the individual game topics when they go up)

With regards to timezones, not a problem at all. Most of these games are 96h day phases and 72h night phases. So you will definitely have time to post and make your opinion heard! I think we have players from a variety of timezones.
