Hey guys, a quick question: Do Wal-Marts tend to get new products in day one? I want to try and get one of the new tool kits on Friday but Wal-Mart is the only store around me that carries Magic products. Anybody know?

They are usually pretty good about it

No, they usually don't. New stuff is usually released on a friday and most walmarts are stocked by the vendors for magic and they only come in once a week. So the 3 by me have the person come in on tuesdays so I can't buy "new" stuff until tuesday if the new stuff they even decide to stock. None of the walmarts by me stock the new event decks for example. It's really hit or miss depending on the store but they're done by vendors and updated when the vendors decide to come in which is usually the same day every week.

What is this new stuff people are anticipating? New cards, or just new ways to buy cards already out?
The latter, I think its the new Deckbuilders Tookit. We won't get new cards until the third Scars set in ...I think its May.

Normally we'd know the name of the third set by now, but Wizards is being very tight-lipped about weather it will be Mirrodin Pure or New Phyrexia.

They just released the "event decks" which are premade decks that are pretty decent for FNM. This friday the new deckbuilders kit for 2011 comes out which is what I'm anticipating. New sets come out at predetermined times but things like event decks, deckbuilders, etc. come out from time to time like the last couple of weeks. So essentially different "way" of buying cards already out. For right now at least.

Ah. Well, that's cool. When they roll this stuff out, I'm guessing it's a mini-event and they don't just show up, right? So, I can preorder some box of the new stuff and not have to fight the unwashed masses?

I am looking to buy the deckbuilder's toolkit since I'm a new player and need a base of cards, and you can't beat 285 cards for 20 bucks.

Are you talking about the all new cards? If so then its actually a huge event. You can order stuff in advance I'm sure, as well as attend tourneys on the day of release, or else go to a pre-release event and play draft or sealed with the new cards a week in advance.

Nice. I think I bought one of those right when I got back into it a month or so ago. Good value. I ended up pulling some cards that are pretty expensive/useful out of it too.

Deck builders tool kit. Its a neat little package for newer players. Comes with a nice box, 4 boosters, and a collection of commons and uncommons as well as some land. I bought one just for the box but otherwise I have no interest in them. I'll probably do the same tomorrow.

Speaking of new stuff, for anyone curious, here is the release schedule

Duel Decks: Knights vs. Dragons : April 1st
Second expansion for Scars (Mirrodin Pure or New Phyrexia) : May 7th (pre-release) May 13th (release)
Commander decks : June 17th
M12 : July 15th
From the Vault: Legends : August 26th
Duel Decks : Ajani vs. Nicol Bolas : September 2nd
New Set (codename Shake) : October

Time to start saving money as I want everything on there.

edit: just realized some people might not know what some of those are.

Duel decks are preconstructed decks based around themes. You buy it and get a knight deck and dragon deck. No new cards, but often new art, different symbols, and it's a nice way to get your hands on some reprinted cards that may not be easy to get anymore.

Commander is wizards lame ass name for EDH. They are releasing 5 decks with brand new legendary creatures as generals.

M12 is the next "edition" release that they do every july. It's kind of an intermediate level collection of cards, many are reprints and they aren't linked to a theme or anything.

From the vault is a collection of 15 cards that are considered high quality cards, reprinted with new art, done as a theme (for instance legends with be all legendary creatures while the last one was called relics and were all artifacts.)

Yup, barring one or two reprints its all new. The three yearly themed sets are always 99% new, and the core set (2011, 2012, etc) is usually around 50/50

Whoa hold up playa. Had no idea what this was. I just learned how to play magic from buying Planeswalkers on Steam and this sounds like a steal. How are the toolkits set up? By color? Can I feasibly make more than one deck out of it?

Its a pretty good start. It gives you 125 randomized cards from recent sets, four booster packs, 100 basic land and a nifty box. You could probably get two to three moderate decks out of it, I'd wager.

So judging by the 100 land I can assume it's multiple colors. Awesome. Wonder if I can pick it up somewhere locally or if I'll have to buy it online.

It comes with 4 boosters, and I think 125 mixed commons and uncommons plus land. It's not enough to build anything but a very basic intro level deck. If you want to build a deck, you are better off thinking about and researching what kind of deck you might like (what colors you prefer, if you like to play offensively or defensively, if you like creatures or instants etc...) and then look up some decks online and buy the cards individually to make one you like. Thats the cheapest route.
Otherwise you can also find people or sites that sell cards in bulk.

But yeah, you CAN make a deck out of it, it just will have to play with other similar level decks.

LOL, yeah. If you want bulk cards for nothing, let me know. GAF has been good at feeding my new addiction and I got a ton of cards I'll never touch.

Ya, where a lot of my cards came from TBH when I started up again a month or two ago. They're nice especially the smathering of uncommons. It gets you a nice diversity amongst sets which is nice so you don't have to buy a bunch of packs to get core commons/uncommons for a lot of decks. Might not be the best deck since you'll only have 4 rares from it but the commons and uncommons and lands are worth it if you don't have cards for only $20. You are essentially paying $4 for 125 semi randomized cards and 100 lands since you get 4 boosters.

Leunam said:
I only just learned the game, so basic intro level deck sounds fine to me.
Yeah, I would recommend also picking up a $12 intro pack or two in the colors you like, which are set specific and contain pre-built 40 card decks and a booster. After that its a matter of what you like and how competitive you want to get.

Eteric Rice said:
Has these toolkits made it cheaper to make good decks?

I've heard tourney level decks cost like $300 + to make. :|
No, a toolkit won't really help you make a "good" deck as much as a "mediocre" one. I used to start myself off each new set with a few intro packs and specific singles, and build up through drafts. Now I just start each set with the pre-release cards.

To be moderately competitive at a local FNM will probably run you 25-40 bucks, especially with the new game day decks. Nationals level...yeah, decks can get expensive.

Yeah I may just do that.

How bulk are we talking?

Dunno, depends on what kind of deck you mean? If you know exactly the cards you want buying singles will mostly likely always be cheapest. Are you talking about decks that will be good at FNM or ones that win world championships? I like building decks around cards I already have and possibly buy some singles to supplement it from there but others don't.

You also have to somewhat pick a "set" right now since the blocks are pretty different. Beseiged is almost all infect for some colors and so you don't gain much from those colors unless you want to run infect.

WanderingWind said:
....how many decks would you like to build? I'm talking free, by the way. Circle of MagicGAF and all that.

Good man. I'll pick up these packs first and then I'll let you know. Nothing like gambling on booster packs. :D

Haha, I used to be addicted to raw boosters before I discovered the joys of Limited.

Ya, our limited league is essentially dead now for some reason. People are grumpy they don't have better cards in their deck. IMO limited and draft kick the shit out of standard and other formats.

WanderingWind said:
The what now?
Limited: drafting and sealed. You tend to get much more customized cards when you draft because of the selection process, and there's a thrill from getting a good pull that you know other people skipped.

Crazy, crazy, crazy. So Standard is the only format where you show up with your deck already built?

Sorry for asking so many silly questions, by the way.

Plan to hit a PTQ here in a couple of weeks. Extended Constructed, so I think I'll bring Jund. Any other Gaffers going to a big tourney soon?

Nope, broadly speaking there's Limited and Constructed.
Limited covered Draft and Sealed
Constructed covers Standard, Extended, Legacy, Vintage, all the pre-con formats.

Then there are formats that can be added on top of anything, like how any kind of game could be a Two-Headed Giant or Planechase.

I don't know weather to classify stuff like RSH as constructed. Is it ever tournament supported?

I was surprised to see the new toolkits yesterday at Wal-Mart. I'm in Canada. I know that Wal-Mart is pretty lazy about putting new product on shelves, as it took a few days for me to see the Elspeth vs Tezzeret duel decks on shelves when LGS had already sold out of them.

Lots of Magic goodness coming up. I'm thinking of just building a KvD deck by buying singles in protest of the crap Knight of the Reliquary art, but I bet there will be at least a few money cards in there that will prohibit this. I'm definitely buying a Commander deck, since I've never done EDH and like the idea of new generals. I'll probably limit M12/Shake to pre-release and drafts, since the cost of this stuff really adds up.

Speaking of limited, our group got it's hands on two booster boxes of Zendikar for cheap and are doing a sealed draft tomorrow night. Fingers crossed for a lotus cobra, sorrin, and fetch lands.

There are two more Extended PTQ's left in my area, one near Boston this weekend, one somewhere in Rhode Island next weekend. I'm not sure if I'll be going to either, but if I do I'll be playing either Jund or RDW.

Question about Infect. It only deals damage in the form of -1/-1 counters right? So if a creature blocks and I did enough damage to destroy it, it wouldn't actually be destroyed and it would instead gain a counter?

Just wanted clarification, not complaining or anything.

It would gain an amount of counters equal to its power; so if its power was enough to kill it, it would definitely be destroyed. You can't even regenerate a creature that's died to -1/-1 counters since its toughness will be 0 or less. Infect is naaaasty.

Gonna draft again tonight. Hoping to build a better deck. I may pick up some Eldrazi boosters too, the 2012 reveal got me all horny for Gideon.

Edit: Speaking of regenerating creatures, I noticed this avatar on MTG Salvation and couldn't help but chuckle.

So a 2/3 creature with infect would apply 2 infect counters? I thought it was one this whole time regardless of power. Infect is some nasty shit indeed.

That's correct! Dat Cystbearer?

How many cards do you have i have one of them Game Cube console boxes packed full. Like thousands of the fuckers, i need to make some decks up again. I had some fuckin killer decks but the rubber bands holding them together melted and shit. Fucked ma shit up!

Yup does infect counters equal to the power of the creature part of why a blightsteel colossus deck is ridiculous. I really hope they have cards that remove poison counters next series, it's way too strong to only have to give 10 counters right now.

Haha, going through my tub I found some cards fused together by rotten rubberbands too. :(

Yeah when I first saw Blightsteel Colossus I thought, damn what a bastard. Then I learned Infect grants poison counters. Coupled with trample and a slew of other things, he's a bigger bastard.

I picked up a fat pack yesterday. Was able to make two beginner decks, one green/white and the other black/blue. Man, I really don't care for the artwork on the lands for this set (Mirrodin Besieged or something). I'm going to hunt down older lands to use. When is the next part of the Phyrexian Invasion set coming out?

EDIT: Ah, nevermind I just got some clarification. So the second chapter came out in February. I guess the third won't be out for a while then.

I think it's supposed to be around May the next set comes out.

Yup, I still need to get me a Blighty and Tezz.

The third set in the Scars block, codenamed "Action", is out in May, so it's not too far off.

Oh wow, that's pretty damn quick. Coming from Warhammer I'm used to a major release every 6-8 months but the releases are for only one group of players and not the entire playerbase. Good stuff.

It's a double-edged sword. It's always nice to have new cards coming at a fairly quick pace, but chasing is expensive.

Yeah, there is a new set every 3 months. Generally, the October, January, and May releases are a full block, and the August release is a core set like M11. New set releases are huge events, since they come along with releases/prereleases and can drastically change the given Limited format. I tend to forget about it, so each time previews start I'm surprised that it is so soon.
