I dont know, Lightning Helix for free seems pretty cool. Maybe that's just me haha

Its going to be really fun to actually play with, I almost guarantee it. But it really doesn't feel like a mechanic with a strong identity. I guess because attack triggers are so common anyway.

It feels like "So we can't give them Battle Cry because of the "All new mechanics!" gimmick......"

I feel like the Gruul one, although a bit more complex at first glance, is probably is going to be the most uninteresting mechanic revealed so far. Not because its boring necessarily, but it seems like the relevant decision is always going to come down to "do I want a body on the ground now, or maybe a combat trick later?"

The Simic one is going to be crazy fun just because of some of the interactions people are going to find.

I'll save full judgement until I see how the mechanic works with other cards. Both gruul and boros could have some very interesting potential but I'm currently not liking gruul at all.

As with Overload and Evoke, the value of Bloodrush will come from the flexibility it offers you, although it's certainly a lot more narrow than the previous two, since you need someone attacking. Of course, if there is a 3/1 Double Striker with Bloodrush somewhere in there, it just might make it to competitive play as a finisher.

My moldy brain is trying to recall, is there any evoke card other than ingot chewer that sees competitive play?

Reveillark is another, although technically Merlia-Pod doesn't play its Evoke version at all.

Hey guys, started playing again about 6 months ago. Been lurking here for about the same amount of time. Originally played back in beta up to around Dark and FE. Got a great play group these days...tons of EDH, some modern and some standard. Figured it was about time to introduce myself and hopefully join the conversation.

I don't suppose you were lucky enough to hang on to all those old cards? Welcome, its a tad slow right now but this thread gets moving fast whenever a new expansion is released.

Which is soon!

It's turned from one of my favorite times of the year into one of the worst :( There are certain friday nights where I feel like a crackhead dying for a binge but I'm locked up somewhere that guarantees I can never get my hands on any. When I'm back in the US this summer I expect I'll be going a little overboard.

Sadly...no. But times have changed and I've been making up for it. I (obviously) now regret selling my old stuff...it hurts to say mox's, time walk, library, gauntlets, etc...you know :-( But my new collection is pretty decent so far. I certainly have more money to spend now than I did when I was a kid. I'm living in the UK but in the states on holiday right now and picked up a box of Zendikar and a ton of other great stuff this last week. Got a handful of fetches from the box :-) I love the modern format.

p.s. That angel has me thinking all sorts of crazy stuff.

Sometimes I dream about sending a message back in time to my younger self telling him to buy as many Alpha and Beta boosters as he can and save them for my older self.
Well that and to invest in certain companies.

Firemane Angel was one of my favourite Ravnica cards, but this new one doesn't have much in common with the oldie other than being a RW Angel.
It should have beeen Lightning Helix Angel. :p

Where abouts in the UK?

I wonder if B/W and R/W will merge to create a token deck. Even if the red is just a splash it seems like the Boros mechanic has good synergy with Lingering Souls etc.

Shriekmaw, Reveillark, Mulldrifter, Cloudthresher, and Greater Gargadon were all main deck material for various decks plus a few others like Offalsnout and Ingot Chewer saw limited play as sideboard material. Nowadays they've died down, but when they were in Standard it was huge (5c control with them and Makeshift Mannequin to reanimate was so much fun), plus Shriewmaw when Survival was still legal in Legacy.

I'm up in Sheffield.

I like the idea. Firemane makes me want to brew something up with Blood artist and Thatcher revolt.

Oh cool, I started playing the game when I was working in Leeds last year, looking forward to going back. What store do you play at?

I go to Patriot Games on the wicker, played a few FNM's and Ravnica launch there. Not sure if there are any other shops in Sheffield. PG is just really close to my flat so I haven't bothered checking. I also get a fair amount of cards off of Trolltrader and MagicMadhouse since the selection of older stuff is a bit weak at the shop. I'm buying as much as I can though while I'm here in the states because the pricing is so much better.

Just turning guys sideways is an under appreciated tactic. It actually takes some intelligence and skill to know when to turn them, how many to turn, how many to hold back in your hand, the best way to take advantage of creature related instants in your hand, how to trick opponents with your creatures by suckering them into situations that will fuck them over. I get far more enjoyment figuring out how to best utilize a creature heavy deck than playing any combo or control deck.

I absolutely agree.

As a primarily aggro player who dips into midrange, it really isn't as simple as just turning guys sideways.

Okay, I finally whittled down my White/Blue deck, here's what I got (please criticize away and let me know what cards are a waste and what i should try to change/add)

Creatures:

1 Angel of Serenity
2 Isperia's Skywatch
1 Azor's Elecutors
1 Angel of Jubilation
1 Azorius Justicar
1 Skymark Roc
1 Soulsworn Spirit
2 Runewing
2 Lyev Skyknight
1 Latch Seeker
1 Stealer of Secrets
3 Azorius Arrester
1 Nephalia Smuggler

Instants:

1 Cyclonic Rift
1 Azorius Charm
1 Syncopate
1 Cancel
3 Cloudshifts
2 Ghostly Flicker
1 Blustersquall

Sorceries:

2 Ghostform
1 Supreme Verdict
1 Terminus
1 Inaction Injunction

Enchantments:

2 Detention Spheres
1 Tricks of the Trade

Artifacts:

1 Conjurer's Closet

Lands:

2 Azorius Guildgate
1 Hallowed Fountain
and the rest plains and islands

I painfully took out some cards including: Talrand, Unsummons, Banishing Stroke, spirit away, arrests, tower drakes, dramatic rescues, angelic armaments, swift justice (if any of these are better than what I have, please let me know)

So does this deck sound good?

Have you considered Fiend Hunters? On their own they can come in quite handy but with cloudshift and ghostly flicker they can be rather potent, permanently exiling something and locking up another in one fell swoop.

I got one. The box and dividers and labels are quite nice for the extra four bucks you are paying over the price of the packs themselves.

I've been scouring the net looking for individual sales of the cards and stickers. No luck.

Also, A) Techno, where the hell you been and B) Dimir will be the last day, I'd wager.

Let's see.

Simic (U/G) -> Gruul (G/R) -> Boros (R/W) -> Orzhov (W/B) -> Dimir (B/U)

Those holiday gift boxes are pretty snazzy. Anybody else get one of those? Those plastic cards are the SHIT.

oh man I absolutely LOVE mine, definitely comes in handy for keeping my cars in order. I was thinking of getting another and just using it for RTR GTC and Dragon's Maze cards only, actually be able to use the guild stickers

Extort is fucking awesome. I really like the Orzhov card.

Excited for the Orzhov mechanic. Haunt was interesting but poorly designed, hopefully they're not afraid to push the envelope a bit without making it too complicated.

EDIT: Hm, pretty safe but it's a strong mechanic too.

Ahahaha, wow, that Orzhov mechanic is sick. Low possibility for interaction but sick.

However, whats the point of having more then one card with Extort out at once? Its not an ability word, so they all have to have the same effect.

EDIT: I guess if you have three out you can pay 3 to lose/gain 3, meh

Extort will shine in multiplayer. I was working on a aggressive/midrange black/white deck. Hopefully I'll get some new cards with extort that fit the game plan.

Hey, could be that little bit of reach that you need to win the game.

Seems cool, but I'm not sure how strong it will be in constructed.

Edit: Posting the card for this glorious new page.

I don't think DImir will have a creature-centric ability. Evolve, Bloodrush and Battalion are all creature-based abilities. I think they'd avoid having 4/5 creature-centric abilities to keep things balanced.

I do think Dimir's keyword will encourage milliing.

Extort is pretty narrow though, isn't it? If it were Extort [manacost] it would be usable later on, but the way it's templated (B/W being on the reminder text) it seem to be strictly an Orzhov mechanic. I remember when they changed Echo to be Echo [manacost] to widen it up a bit.

Maybe it's tied to mana colors? Like R/G hybrid does something different, etc on different cards.

Or maybe not.

Hmm, could be. It's un-R&D-like to be that specific.

EDIT: yeah thinking about it they must be using colour identity, it could be "pay 1 mana of any colour of this card's colour identity" or something like that.

Extort could possibly end up in other colours down the road, but being a guild mechanic I think it would stay in B/W only. At least for GTC/DGM anyway. If it pops up again in another set then it would be cool to see it in other colours.

It wouldn't really fit in other colors, unless they changed the effect. Lose 1 gain 1 is definitely a purely B/W mechanic.
