Holy hell. That mechanic is baller.

Double Strike man. Double. Strike.

Slap any Cipher card on Fencing Ace.

Ah, so you cast the spell, then instead of getting the effect right away, you get it on an attack. And it there until the creature dies. That's pretty cool.

No, you get the spell immediately, and then you have a chance to re-use the spell when combat damage to your opponent happens with the creature you cipher the spell onto.

This mechanic is absolutely bonkers. This is going to break standard in half.

No no, you get the effect AND you get to put it on a creature to copy it whenever they deal damage. That's why Cipher starts with "Then".

Imagine a Cipher instant. You can play it during declare blockers after one of your guys gets through, then Cipher it to get it again once damage resolves!

Get ready for esper control as far as they eye can see.

Seriously, how expensive will "Draw a card, Cipher" have to be to not get it turned into Curiousity with hexproof?

I'd play the hell out of it a 2U. I'd think about it at 3U.

Uh, so this mechanic is bonkers then. Who thinks we see the take extra turn with cipher? Mythic?

I love how wizards loves to give blue all sorts of card advantage. Like, all the other mechanics seem like they have some building around to be made effective. This card can be thrown on anything and its amazing.

2U would be viable, 3U only if it was instant.

Knowing WOTC, 3UU. Trololololol.

Man... all the other guild abilities got shit on. That Dimir ability is nuts. Does the card go away after the Cipher ability registers?

Also, Alchemist's Refuge :(

Card is exiled so yes, even if the creature it's ciphered on dies, you won't be able to get it back without some tutoring shenanigans.

Boros got the worst mechanic again by a mile. It's really not even a mechanic.

Well, it all comes down to what they do with it.

Battalion - Whenever Stupid Broken Card and at least two other creatures attack, put a token onto the battlefield for each creature copying that creature tapped and attacking.

Cipher is easily the best mechanic in the block. There's so much design space with it.

Also, it works well, oddly enough, with Extort (and Storm and other abilities) since the copy is cast.

Battalion actually works pretty well in team-based multiplayer for the same reasons Exalted doesn't work in those formats.

WTF cipher. I thought it was going to read "player may cast a copy of that encoded spell by paying it's original mana cost" or something like that. I never ever expected it to be free. That seems way too easy to hugely abuse.

Thinking about it, I wouldn't be surprised if all the spells with cipher are mid to low level spells. No take an extra turn or anything like that. Just stuff like "destroy a tapped creature" or "return a creature to it's owners hand".

Wizards has been pretty good about power levels the last few sets now. I wouldn't be shocked if this is the ability where they slip up

Quick question: Say I bring a creature out that can detain, I choose a target and detain it. Now I use a cloudshift on that creature to retrigger detain, does that break the original detain on the original target, or am I able to detain two targets this way? Does detain stay independent of the creature who performed it basically is what I'm asking...

You can detain two targets like that. If Detain, or any effect, depends on the thing that caused it sticking around it will usually say so.

Wizards has officially gotten me excited to play UB, which is no easy feat. I thought for sure it'd be another lame mill mechanic.

Esper control baby. Esper control.

So, I've just returned to Magic...

Quick question for those in the know, if I want to get some previous era cards for Modern play what would be the most cost efficient method? I mean I could buy a "bulk" of garbage cards I guess but anything worth having I don't think will be in those.

Depends on what you mean, do you just want old cards to play with friends with our you want a competitive modern deck?

To research:
www.mtgsalvation.com

To buy:

I'm sure some of the modern guys here would be happy to help as well. I only really play standard, so my aid ends at providing resources like above.

Is star city games ever cheap?

I don't really get the love for the Dimir keyword until we see some more cards with it. It could be nuts sure, but they know that so the cards will most likely be overcosted or effects no one wants.
Plus I like playing UB/Esper control decks with the only creatures really being Lingering Souls / Snapcaster Mage. This mechanic seems more suited to those stupid ass Hexproof decks with Geist and Invisible Stalker.

For rares and some older stuff, it's great. I was able to grab Hellriders there for more than 2 dollars less than TCGPlayer low price a few weeks ago, and there EDH prices are great. Only issue is that commons and uncommons are sometimes 5-10x the price of competitors!

That's rough dude, so close. Still playing BR aggro or switched over to something else?
It's Modern season noob!

I was going to play scapeshift, but couldn't meet up with the person who had the ramp commons I needed, so I swapped to the Sun Titan list that won the MTGO PTQ. It ended up being a blessing in disguise- Twin was one of the more popuar decks and sort of a nightmare matchup. Deck is very good, but the biggest problem I was running into is that so many people are picking up these decks for the first time and it's causing them to play incredibly slowly.

I lurked this thread for so long and it seems no one plays EDH :-( Overcosted cards is where all the fun happens ;-)

P.s. Kirblar...love following your action. Keep it up.

So after a lot of years of not playing i decided to build a casual deck to play against some friends. It doesnt need to be tournament legal or even t2 for that matter.

Im planning on building a (relative cheap) UB underworld dreams deck, i have a few cards on the decklist already, but maybe someone here has an idea on what to add (or change the amount of certain type cards)

Lands: (24)
10x Swamp
8x Island
2x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
4x Underground river (or drowned catacomb)

Spells:
4x Underworld dreams
4x Wheel and Deal
4x Dark ritual
4x Demonic Tutor
...more to add? (maybe creature destroying like terror or smth)

Artifacts:
4x Howling mine
2x Font of Mythos
1x Memory jar (but maybe thats to lame?)
?x Teferi's puzzle box

Creatures:
?x Kami of the crescent moon (but im not sure if its any good?)

I know there is a combination of megrim also with this deck, but im not sure wich version works best.
Thanks for looking :)

Urbogs and Demonic Tutors aren't exactly cheap. Id get some more cheap Dual lands- Dimir Aquaducts, Jwar Island Refuge, ect. Id also think about Temple Bell over Howling mine- it is a bit more mana intensive, but getting to control when cards are drawn is powerful. As far as more drawing, Jace Beleren is a natural fit, probably a little better than Kami of Crescent Moon.

If you want to splash something, Runeflare Trap would be a good win condition for this deck as a backup to Dreams.

Really wish someone told me about the 64 free cards per month bot earlier. All those months I've had an account before this wasted! (Yes, even if they are common/uncommon: come on, it's 64 cards!)
