I have to wonder if they'll get play against Uber-Jace. It seems like Wizards was trying to print important answers for various formats in this set.
we'll see, but now i have to look at every colour and not just my typical blue for potential pulls.
it'll certainly make people think twice if im playing a counterspell deck.

funfunfun.

I would love to have a mental misstepp and a surgical extraction in my opening hand. Before I've even played a land, counter your aether vial, remove them all from your deck. Harhar nice merfolk deck you got there.

So, running tally, is Pandaman the second person this thread has gotten back into the game?

surgical is the kind of card you 'accidentally drop' on your opponents side of the table before the game starts.

timing is terrible though, my brother wrote me yesterday inviting me to a draft on his expense to hang out together.

how can i keep him paying when i show up with newer cards than him. xD

I was one, too. So, Leunam, Pandaman and me. The holy trinity of n00bs.
You were the first one I counted, I had forgotten Leunam

EDIT: Actually, Leunam was a new player, so I think its something like three new players, two returning. 2500 posts later I'm pretty damn happy with this thread.

Plus, unlike the official forums, you guys go fairly easy on the jargon and deck build dick-measuring that makes the Salvation forums so annoying to navigate. Good job!

So I'm leaving in the middle of the night on friday, after a full days work and celebrating my girlfriend's birthday all night, to drive 5-6 hours to Rhode Island to sign up at 8 in the morning and play in an a tournament i'll likely scrub out of after 4 rounds.

The things I do for my magic obsession.

Salvation forums are awful. I've been playing for 15 years and I still feel like a newb reading through threads on there sometimes. Half the posters act like king of the geekpile, which is like being king of herpes.

I skipped my anniversary (GF was cool with it) and hitched a ride with a friend for a 45 min drive to States one year. Of course, I left my deck at home and my AWESOME friend drove us all the way back to get it. We hauled ass back to Santa Monica and made it. :)

It was just a crazy day and I somehow won the event. Still owe my buddy and GF big for that one.

That's the spirit. Providence will be worth it. We're doing FNM, and then setting up a grill and having people over until we pass out, then driving the hour there Saturday morning.

How many other people here are going to Grand Prix Providence this weekend?

Heh. I worked Grand Prix Long Beach a few weeks ago. WEST COAST BABY!

you know, id almost reccommend skipping a half dozen sets and then coming back to browse gatherer and becoming giddy over the new cards.

im drolling over the blue leyline AND its being reprinted for 11th edition?

Yeah, but theres just so much that you missed. Ravnica, Time Spiral, and Lorwyn/Shadowmoor are all completely awesome sets as cohesive wholes, in a way that I'm not sure just looking at the cards in retrospect captures.

Fuck surgical extraction. I played myr combo deck tonight and someone used it on my galvanizer making my deck completely worthless.... Fuck that card.

I'm looking forward to knowing what Innistrad or whatever the new stuff is revolves around. I hope they move away from the artifact world thing and go somewhere new. Is that generally how the blocks work?

lol against decks that need a specific card to combo off, it's fucking epic. I expect, between mental misstep and surgical extraction, to see decks with only one win condition to die off for at least a little while.

i was never a big fan of standard, i would normally hit up booster drafts and then play with people after being eliminated. the fun for me was always building new decks out of boxes of boosters and buying singles for casual play after drafts.

so when i see the blue leyline, i just remember all those crazy deckbuilding ideas that didnt work because a key card was a sorcery. :P

Yup, after this block being artifact centered, they will definitely move into a different theme. In fact expect very few artifacts of consequence in the next set. It would be interesting if they go back to somewhere like Ravnica, the spoiler art definitely has a similar feel imo.

Yeah, there's a lot of good stuff in the past few years. I know you mostly play blue, but look up a card called Doubling Season. Just when you think you've figured out every insane interaction it has, you'll realize another one.

Bingo. Alara was a multi-color block, Zendikar was a land block, Scars of Mirrodin was an artifact block, we'll see what Innistrad is.

Good. I kinda don't like the world we're playing in right now. I like some of the cards, clearly, and I can appreciate them doing something wholly unique to MTG...but it's just not for me. I want more wizards and elves and dragons and such. Less robots myrs and golems and such.

I've always liked artifacts so this set made me happy, unfortunately I thought the cards in the scars set were somewhat weak, with only this last set really taking advantage of the setting.

anyone keep up with the lore in magic? i spent mad time today just reading whats been going on. urabrask sounds like a pretty cool character, but apparently the storyline just ends on a cliff hanger?

has there been any novels or anything out that explains what happens with the war now that karn is all shiny again and you have these preators plotting behind eachothers back? did they ever conclude the story, or are we gonna have to wait like 8 years when they revisit the world?

as for worlds, zendikar is definitely one of my favorite worlds ever. i really liked the whole idea of adventure and expeditions, with some pretty sweet locales. i had no idea wizards did these planeswalkers guides until recently so it was fun going through it all.

Seems clear that they're leaving it open for a future "Mirrodin Reclaimed" block at some point.

Yeah, I never got used to using artifacts. Any time I try to build anything around them, I get destroyed.

Well Magic 2012 will strike those themes regardless. The core sets are always the epitome of generic high-fantasy Magic

I think they've said that they plan to revisit the Phyrexians as villains in the future, as well as Nicol Bolas and the Eldrazi

Storyline wise, the impression I got is that Karn left figuring Mirrodin a loss, and is on a mission to eliminate all the phyrexian oil he left on other planes before they get invaded too, while some of the phyrexian factions are aiming their sites on other planes to invade. So I expect the next time the storyline pops up, it will involve something about NP trying to invade a different plane and the good guys banding together to push them back. Hopefully we finally get a Yawgmoth card, maybe as a planeswalker :D

Eh. Part of what's cool about the game. There is some set that has your particular brand of fantasy in it. This horror thing they're going for this time around looks cool as hell. I just hope they stay away from ninjas and samurai for a while.

Oh yeah, each block's new twist is almost always really cool to see.

Now, it seemed to me that NPH really favored blue/black. Is that in my head, intentional or what? If it's intentional, did they have a set that favored other colors? Specifically white?

...oh, yeah. Elish Norn is a BITCH.

I want another tribal block. Lorwyn was so fantastic with the flavoring. Zendikar was the only set in a while that I liked. I just find any artifact themed blocks to be cold and uninteresting.

Yeah I agree. If I wanted to play a Ninja and Samurai themed CCG I'd play Legend of the Five Rings again. Where they do an infinitely better job of it.

Lorwyn block was beautiful. Up there with Ravnica for the absolute best art direction.

And blue is always very very strong. And every time they try to nerf it people go "why do you hate blue!!1"

Blue is definitely strong in this set, very strong. I'd say they tried to make white strong for this set as well, and somewhat succeeded, but black is very strong too. That 1/1 flying with lifelink for 1 colorless and 1 black phyrexian mana is such a ballsfucking awesome common.

I'm not sure about recent sets, but I remember Torment was intentionally black-focused, and then Judgment was based around White and Green. I dont think they've done any so encompassing as Torment since then, but they have their moments in each block.

Haha, do it. Reminds me of our school chat group server. We used to have weekly dinners at the student union, so whenever new people came we'd have them yell "Cheesecake!" until they found us.

Plus...you know. Rat ninjas are about the dumbest thing they've put into the game since that purple hippogriff somebody posted a few pages back.

boo, i was afraid of that. i hate cliffhangers >_< let my simple mind get the pleasure of closure.

i feel like we did that already before..

side note, the writing and voice work on the magic 2012 promo video was hilarious.

Lorwyn is also a surprisingly powerful block. When I started restocking my collection after I came back into magic, I ignored it at first, but there are some ridiculously good cards in that set and I like that the art has an old school feel, a lot more "cartoony" art rather than the realistic stuff they go with these days.

So, I need to buy some boxes of Ravnica, Torment, Lorwyn and Judgement. I know Lorwyn has some of the elves I play with. That is one creature type they really don't need any more of, TBH. There is an elf for every problem.

Red needs a long time bump. Lightning bolt is fantastic, no doubt, but compared to Goyf, FoW, Swords to Plow and Dark Ritual, red needs some love. Goblin Guide was a great start but red still needs more.

lol well the whole invasion storyline is considered their most popular storyline I guess, and people constantly complain we never got a yawgmoth card despite him being one of the biggest bad guys in the magic universe. They should just troll the fuck out of everyone and make yawgmoth a planeswalker whose abilities are the same as will and bargain.

Speaking of red cards, that shrine of burning rage has been incredible in my red deck wins deck. Drop it first turn using a simian spirit guide, pop off a pyretic ritual for a lightning bolt and a marauders turn 2 to get 4 counters on it and deal 4 to your opponent. Pop the shrine turn three for 5 damage and attack for 3 and you already have your opponent at 8 and just waiting to get burnt off the battlefield.

Wow, yeah, you did. The entire Ravnica block is worth investing in, but if you're primarily interested in green and white, the first set (Ravnica: City of Guilds) is the one with the G/W faction.

Lorwyn in general is a good set, although you can probably just grab singles from Morningtide, Shadowmoor, and Eventide.

Eh, my wife plays red and white now. So, between the two of us, we play all the colors. Except blue, for the most part. Blue is for losers.

And yeah, Siddx, as interested as I am in Innistrad, I do hope that we aren't going to have grimdark Magic sets for the next five years. Something similar in tone to Lorwyn would be awesome.
