To the guy with the infect deck considering Diabolic Tutor:

Your deck is a very aggressive one with alot of redundancy. The more redundancy you have, the more consistent you are with your game plan, which is good.

Diabolic Tutor is a card that is meant to give your deck virtual redundancy, at the hefty cost of spending an entire turn playing a 4 mana sorcery that doesnt affect the board at all. As an aggressive deck, you don't want that. If you want to take out Go for the Throat, replace it with either a superior removal spell or another card that will give your opponent poison counters. Trust me, your deck will thank you for it!

Agreed.
To be honest, in my infect experience when playing infect you are on a timer.
You have to hit hard and hit fast, remove their blockers and get in and smack for as much as you can as fast as you can because as soon as they pop a pyroclasm, slagstorm, day of judgement or if they get back in counter control position you are done and there is no way back from it.

This was the first Magic card I ever saw. It was either Unlimited, Revised, Fourth or Fifth Edition. I was 10 or a bit younger at the time. Everything about this card made me want to learn the game. This card is now in my EDH deck.

I bought a Beta version recently, classic card.

I miss the BU dredge decks, staving off and chilling then just popping akroma out~ fun times, felt like I was playing another card game.

Busy weekend of pick ups:

4x Blue Sun's Zenith $.75/ea
Sangromancer x1 - $0.25/ea
Black Sun's Zenith x2 - $4.25/ea
Red Sun's Zenith x4 - $0.45/ea
Creeping Corrosion x4 - $0.30/ea
Phyrexian Revoker x2 - $3/ea
Shimmer Myr x7 - $0.80/ea
Decimator Web x6 - $0.25/ea
2x Inkmoth Nexus $8.00/ea

1x Marsh Flats (Japanese) $8.00/ea
2x Scalding Tarn (Japanese) $10.00/ea
1x Bloodghast (japanese) $7.00
1x Oracle of Mul Daya (Japanese) $2.00
2x Eldrazi Monument $8.00/ea

I think I made out rather well on all of them.

Woot, got my 3-0 finish.

Match three was intense. I was playing UW control and my opponent had me at 8 poison counters courtesy of Phyrexian Vatmother. Somehow I was able to hold him off for another 7 turns and he died to self-inflicted poison counters.

Those prices seem pretty cheap, where did you buy them?

Nice, did you win anything for going 3-0?

According to MTG Salvation, it looks like we're getting a new Deckbuilder's Toolkit in March. I can wholeheartedly endorse them as a good way to get people into Magic, as they contain a good number of lands and full playsets of very useful cards, including Lightning Bolt.

Picking through the sales forum on MtG Salvation, though the Eldrazi Monuments were from Ebay.
(I unloaded my two Monuments when they were going for $15 each but realized that my elf deck still works better with them)

Vatmother is a beast, but you have to make sure that if you play it you have a way to get rid of it.
Have been thinking of pulling 1 Phryexian Crusader for one, figuring I can just go for the throat it if I need to but honestly it is only strong turn 4, after that it is just another creature.
In the old days with Dark Ritual, it would have been a turn two monster.

Vatmother is good in U/B infect, when you've got a chance at Vault Skyward or Neurok Invisimancer to get through for four poison more then once. Whenever I draft infect I snap up those Invisimancers, they're invaluable for getting through with poison.

Got 4 booster packs which pays for my next draft.

Agreed. The guy used his Spread the Sickness on one of my creatures when he should have eliminated the Vatmother. Granted, he only had a few poison counters at the time so I can't blame him too much. You're right about the Invismancer's trigger, it can steal a game.

I drafted the vatmother in a friendly draft with some friends, one of them pacified it not realizing it was a lock for her win :(

Nothing like having your own weapons turned against you.

Out of curiosity, what do people ship singles in so they don't get wrecked in shipping?

Myself and most that I receive are usually shipping in top loaders, and then in a bubble padded envelope though if it is more than a few cards usually the cards are in sleeves and then put between two top loaders and wrapped.

Made my first Elf deck. Forgot to actually add powerful creatures the first time around. Got spanked - but I had around 20 possible mana!

Second time around, I had enough mana to play Crash of Worms, recall it, giant growth and smashed some shit up. Good times.

My wife whupped me with a straight white deck though later on. This game is sweet.

Also, say I want to buy a bunch of booster packs from a set. Which is a good set to try to buy from right now?

Do you care about tournament legality, or just for fun? If its just for fun I'd honestly recommend Zendikar, Worldwake and 2011 over Scars. The Zendikar block is a bit better for expanding a collection, Scars is so specialized.

I will never play in a tournament. I would lose in a heartbeat. Zendikar...man, those were the packs I bought last night, and I pulled nothing but crap from them. I was kinda upset, but I guess that's the way it goes.

Now that I'm starting to remember the game, I may just start buying singles. Like Righteousness. I need me some of them.

Blue/Black
Green/Red
White/Blue
Red/Black

In that order, I think, will be the decks I try to build. In any case, this thread has given me and the missus (plus our like-minded nerd friends) a whole new dynamic. Awesome thread, Technomancer. Awesome to the max.

I would advise against buying boosters if you're trying to build decks, especially since you have access to F&S. With that said, check out the Deckbuilder's Toolkit...a new one is due out soon.

Also, play some multiplayer with your group!

Zendikar block also has some nice elf cards. You can make pretty sweet elf decks with the current sets.

New ones are just going to be mirrodin block? Besides the dead M10 cards, wouldn't it be better to get an older one if he's not playing in tourneys?

I would say m11, however with m12 coming out this summer, it might not be the best choice. If you don't care about legality, just buy a smattering of random packs. Some places stock older boosters, for instance a store called bullmoose around here has packs going all the way back to time spiral block, as well as a few random even older ones.
Also, I suggest going online and just browsing rares and writing down names of stuff you think is neat and then trying to track them down.
If you find worldwake, buy some. It has Good Jace and stoneforge mystic, both money cards in high demand now. However packs are very very hard to find. Zendikar and rise of eldrazi also have some big money cards as well.

We're going to. I plan on going back down there with them and getting a random box of uncommons/rare. The guy is going to sell me a box of 1000 for 40, which seems fair. Part of what I love is discovering cards.

But, like I said earlier, I'm now on a strict card budget. I have plenty of commons now - too many in fact, but I need those special cards to pull it all together. For instance, one Overrun or Overwhelming Stampede would make my green deck almost unbeatable. Except against blue. Still need to work the kinks out of that.

Plus, I need to man up and buy some Planeswalkers. Those things are too amazing to not have one of every color kicking around.

Hm. One of the shops nearby that specializes in DnD and WarHammer has Worldwake priced the same as everything else. Guessing they just didn't do their research?

Not sure, but thats odd, although not unheard of. Wal Mart here got a bunch of worldwake fat packs randomly and put them on sale for 35 bucks a piece, despite them going for 50 on starcity. They were gone within a day after word of mouth hit though.
A japanese worldwake booster pack can go for 10 bucks a piece.

No, no, no. You should buy them and send them to me! :D

And ya, they're rare now so they're like $7-$8 for packs if you can find them usually. $200+ for a box.

WanderingWind said:

there are really only two great cards in the set, and few other good to so so ones. So chances are you won't pull anything remarkable...but if you happen to pull a jace you will be a happy happy man.

Pretty much, Jace is like the sole reason the price is so goddam inflated.

QUESTION:

Does this count as both a black and a white creature?
uszeGuWXVYgSMhq4.jpg

Or does it require WHOLE symbols to be fully counted as both colors? Perhaps it only counts as whatever color it is cast as.

If that doesn't work, are there any cheap black/white creatures I could look into?

I'm thinking of working a deck with this:

Hybrid cards count as both colors, even if you only paid one.

Randomly decided to go to Vancouver PTQ yesterday right after FNM. It was a 3 hour drive and I had never ever played extended. As a result, I didn't do well. It was still fun though.

Extended to me is the hardest format to play in. Type 2 has a smaller card base so even though sometimes certain decks/cards dominate, you don't have a ton of cards to chose from to muddle things up. Legacy has tons of cards to chose from, but that gives you tons of options. Extended is this weird middle ground that I always find hard to come up with decks for.

I agree, but more because Extended is only relevant for a few ptq's a year and then disappears. Type 2 and Legacy are year-round and so have time to develop, but Extended you typically have half a dozen relevant events at most. You can do testing, but most of the time the decks just seem like variations of their Type 2 counterparts (now made even worse by making extended smaller now).

Yeah, not being able to test really hurt me. Also not recognizing a lot of the cards. People were surprised when I asked to read them. I played RDW and went 3-4. It wasn't so bad, all things considered.

the store i used to go to had extended every week, which was nice. i got to know the format pretty well. also, my greatest moment in mtg ever came in an extended ptq.

it is fairly late in the tournament (maybe round 6 out of 8) and i am a playing TEPS, a deck which cast a lot of mana acceleration spells into a huge:

41.jpg
which eventually leads to a kill with

75.jpg

for the win. i am playing against faeries, which is pretty bad matchup, because faeries has counters and lots of disruption. the dude i am playing against is quite good (he had a 1950 or so rating, while mine was around 1750) at the time. i get steamrolled game 1. game he comes out fast with hand disruption and i lose two mind's desires to a thoughtseize and a vendillion clique respectively. then (the clique had died to something, maybe a volcanic fallout) he taps out to play another clique during my draw step. it gets another (!) mind's desire. so now he is tapped out, but i have one desire in my graveyard and two on the bottom of my library. he also has some dudes and a bunch of cards in hand. i think for a minute or so then decided to unleash the dragon. i cast rite of flame, desparate ritual, manamorphose, etc; and get a lot of mana. finally, i have a remand and a rite of flame in hand (and 9 mana floating). i cast rite, then remand it and instead of looking at the card i draw off remand, i just flip right off the top of my library onto the table-

and it's the last mind's desire in the deck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there were a lot of the dude's friends watching and the whole scene was just surreally awesome.

of course i end up losing game 3. :(

Yes it is black and white, also consider, Unmake, Nip Gwyllion, Beckon Apparition, and Mourning Thrull.

I bought a Mirrodin Besiged Fat-Pack or whatever they call it these days that comes with the visual-check-list and 9 packs. In those packs I pulled A Thrun the Last Troll, Glissa the Traitor & a Sword of Feast or Famine Foil. 3 Mythics in 9 packs :)

If I've been out of the MTG game for about 6 years (and I have) would drafting standard be too much for me? Being competitive is part of the fun to me so if I feel clueless, it's not as enjoyable.

There's some new rules, but other than that: No, not really. Draft is pretty easy to get into. Pick cards, find out what they do if you aren't sure and build.

Biggest change is probably no mana burn.

Drafting is how I'd recommend getting back into the game. Do it often and with good players. It is what I am doing right now actually, since I havent played Type 2 competitively in about that same amount of time.

Did anyone else watch the Washington DC Star City Open matches last night? The finals were Team America vs Doomsday/show and tell combo, with TA coming out on top in three games. Game 3 ended after the guy played Doomsday, played the Shelldock Isle, and TA Stifled the cip trigger. Fucking great. The top 8 was also fairly diverse; compare it to the previous few Open Top 8's, which all have very different ranges of decks with at least a dozen viable archetypes in the top slots alone. Fuck yeah Legacy.

Oh, and damage happens immediately, so no more blocking, sacrificing for an effect, and still dealing the blocker damage.

It was always that way, at least that example.
If you block, then sac for an effect the attacker is still blocked but the defender does no damage to the attacker.

The stack is different though, no more last in first out with instants and no more interrupts.

Ya, pretty much. I kept doing worldwake after that too to see what it was like to pull a jace. :P

Does anyone know if Wal-Mart ever reduces prices on older sets? I've seen Worldwake fat packs and boosters from time to time, but they're always at MSRP ($40 and $5.50, respectively - don't ask me how that works when we've been at or near parity since the crash, but anyway). I make it a point to check the CCG section of every Wal-Mart and run old products through the scanner in hopes that they'll be on clearance, but so far I've had zero luck.

I've considered paying off an employee to grab 'em for me, or to simply steal them myself. Yes, I have a problem.

No they don't discount, most, if not all, are vendor operated and the vendor will take them back and more them to a different place to sell them. Where the hell do you live that boosters are $5.50? They should be $4 which is MSRP.
