No they don't discount, most, if not all, are vendor operated and the vendor will take them back and more them to a different place to sell them. Where the hell do you live that boosters are $5.50? They should be $4 which is MSRP.
Canada. For some reason, Wizards' pricing is retarded here. The going rate at the more popular hobby shops around here is typically 3 boosters for $10, but that applies only to the most recent sets. Old stuff is generally more expensive, and I believe Worldwake is completely gone from most dealers' inventories.

I was just playing duels of the planeswalkers and WTF at coat of arms. That card is obscene, I wonder if they'll ever reprint it.

Probably not for a while to be honest, it was in all the way up to M10.
I think it was in the preconstructed premium sliver deck a little while back too.
For the casting cost, I like Eldrazi Monument more though

Good card, not great card. It affects your opponents creatures too which I have seen backfire pretty bad before. I had some in a snake deck around kamigawa block and it worked quite well in some situations. I also have one in my vampire EDH deck and it is quite useful.

coat of arms was amazing back in odyssey-onslaught blocks. fucking squirrel decks ruined me every time

The only thing with eldrazi is it would be harder to get working in my wurm deck. Eldrazi would be good in a myr or something deck where you can easily produce tokens though. I've been getting a shitload of myrs so I've been thinking about making a deck of those.

Elves and Mono-Green Aggro are where Eldrazi Monument really shines. It's an amazing finisher when you've got lots of creatures and some other static pump effects.

I keep meaning to throw together a just for fun eldrazi token deck with eldrazi monument and raid bombardment

The fourth challenge where you're black playing chandra is stupid. The one card has if it deal combat damage to a player that player loses so if you use terror to let it attack directly you still lose the challenge... So stupid.

Megrim is the key.

No I know, but you should be able to win the other way when it tells you the other person loses. It taps land so stupidly also.

Has anyone tried one of Trialpay offers to get magic workstation for free? I don't want to do them though if it's shady...
Edit: Nvm, none seem to be free like they say. Dunno if I want to drop $27 though... Is it that worth it?

ah ok yeah I see what you mean. Phage is fucking hilarious to play in type 4. We have had so many "fuck you" moments with that card. We had someone play her on his first turn, then someone else immediately countered her and then someone else immediately used a spell to bring all creatures from graveyards back to play. Dead on turn one, had to sit there looking pissed off for 2 hours while we finished the game.

Haha, that's such a bitch.

Never heard of type 4, just did a google and it sounds pretty silly, but amusing to play every now and then.

Yeah not very appealing to me either, it is right up there with other lunch table formats like having one pile of land and then the rest of your deck and being able to draw from either one or mana drop where you can play as many lands as you want per turn.

With the right deck type 4 is incredibly fun. The guy who put our deck together is a huge collector so he basically had access to everything outside of the power 9 to put in the type 4 deck. And it's been tweaked over a two year period, making it a very very good deck to play with. Whats awesome about it is you get to play with tons of cards that A) aren't useful in any other format B) you probably don't own yourself unless you are a serious collector.
Basically about 7 of us (although the number fluctuates, we've had as many as 12) get together and play type 4 on fridays. We drink, smoke weed, talk shit, and have a great time without having to bring decks of our own. If you have access to a large amount of cards and some free time, I highly highly recommend giving it a shot. Its the best multiplayer format in magic hands down. Mainly because of the fact you don't need to own a single card yourself to play, but also because it moves at a pace that allows a lot of social interaction and lets you play with crazy cards you would never ever play with otherwise. It's also neat in that it turns cards that are otherwise completely useless into super powerhouse cards.

built my first random deck and played my first few games of MTG last night. ive played DOTP on 360 on and off since its release and have a friend whos been bugging me to play livw with cards.

went with a friend to a store that sells singles and stuff. i spent about $12 putting together a deck of cards that just seemed interesting to me. shouyld have went with a mono deck to start with, but for some reason decided to try a red black deck.

deck was ok, but i didnt like the random theme of it. i won a few of the games though, so it wasnt all crap. im thinking about trying to put together a mono red goblin themed deck.

hopefully i can just build a few cheap decks and play casually without getting totally hooked on buying shit. i could see this getting very expensive and addictive.

fun game though!

Jared Leto Jace is the new hotness

That art is catching all kinds of heat on the forums. People don't want their Magic tainted by animu influence! I'm inclined to agree, although the only real problem I have with the art is the hair.

I didn't like Chipmunk Chandra at first, but am starting to warm to her.

So the 36 booster packs(core 2011) I ordered just came in. Very vampire and wurm heavy. Planning on ordering this set of 3200 cards for $30 off eBay. I've only been playing standard ,but would like to play legacy or limited too.

Yep, the new deckbuilder's toolkit.
The art is from M12
I like it, and it is definitely better than this:

I bought the Jace novel because they were selling them for five bucks each at GenCon and I was like "sure, why not?"
Still haven't read it, and I didn't get the promo though :(

I read the Test of Metal passage that came with my Scars fat pack and the line "This is going to suck" struck me as really out of place for the universe. The back-and-forth between Tezzeret and Nicol Bolas was fun to read, though. Makes me wonder if all the novels have a similarly campy tone, being directed at the teenage audience and all.

Just out of curiosity, are you Harbinger on the Salvation forums? Guy has the same avatar as you.

Thats one of those things that turn me off many licensed works. Characters from alien cultures and worlds who speak with modern mannerisms, structures, and vocabulary. Chandra in particular is bad about this, it always bugs me in the webcomics and such.

What? They're keeping the old packs as the boosters? That's beat as hell.

Here is the info on the new Toolkit, I just started playing again (I played a bit 14 years ago when I was VERY young) after reading a bit of this thread and going out and buying a few Starter packs and new expansion Fat Pack. With this I'll finally have enough cards to make a deck or two that will get me started.

I enjoyed the Duels of the Planeswalkers quite a bit but at the same time those decks are so limited that if you draw bad cards there is almost NOTHING you can do against other decks in the same game. I was trying to play through the single player portion with all the decks but some match ups are just impossible without some luck and the same goes for online play even with the unlocked cards that you get for going through the game in SP first.

Looking at all the top decks online it seems to be a mix of Blue/White or Blue/White/Red or Black. It seems to me that if you are going to play a tri-color deck you really need special lands and cards to feed the spells and most decks contain very few creatures in favor of tactical spells instead, this is quite different form the Duels game. Where would you recommend I start for a good deck I can play with for Friday Night Magic?

No idea but they freaking should! I would LOVE to play MTG online against other people on iPhone/iPod/iPad... damn that would be amazing.

Have you looked at the event decks? They're built to be playable in FNM. You could always edit from there to improve it. They have the lists online if you're interested of what is in them. The red one is supposed to be pretty nice. It really depends on who your playing. One week I played a guy with 4 Jaces, the next week I came in third with my Wurm deck. I'd say look at your cards and find what you want your deck to be and then worry about fleshing it out from there. The hardest thing is usually deciding how you want your deck to work. The event decks aren't a bad starting point if you don't know what you want.

And the deckbuilders are the new series, I thought so. I can't wait until they come out next week, makes me wish I didn't buy so many of the old style.

If I want to collect cards from the Alara block, what's the best way to go about it? I see the sets go for relatively inexpensive prices on eBay, but ideally I'd like to experiment with decks within the block so I'd need multiples of at least the commons/uncommons. I'm considering buying a box or two of the Alara block premium boosters, but I'm hesitant because I'd be chasing rares/mythics across 3 different sets. Even if the mythic rare ratio is increased, I'm still getting 3, maybe 4 mythics out of a pool of 30, maybe of which aren't very valuable. Any suggestions?

The Source is definitely the best forum for Legacy. I dont post much, but I've been there for years.

So....I think I'm going to just build a deck around 4 prodigal mages, some buffs and a ton of counters.

Basically, I'm going to annoy the shit out of my next opponent.

You bastard.

I just sold off my vengevines online and picked up some goyf's. Too bad FoW's are over 100 tickets each now.

Went out and bought the Red Event Deck tonight called "Into the Breach" it is quite good and pretty much ready to play, could use a few extras of the rares but pretty nice from what I can tell. I tested it out today against my brother using one of the Intro decks and it is certainly better then those. I ended up playing Intro deck vs intro deck to keep it fair for him.

Ya, kid at our FNM bought it to play and won 2 or 3 rounds with it last week for standard. It's not to bad and seems like a decent starting point to build a deck if you don't have anything.

I check it once a day usually in the evening just to read up on the threads for the decks I have built. It's a really well run place and a good representation of the Eternal community-a bit snarky, mostly mellow group.

It's only for Legacy though. However, that's the constructed format I only really care about, so that's fine by me.

Random question...

Do kids in high school still play magic? I just started at a high school here in Maine and I don't want to sound like an idiot if I ask my students... I'd like to start a club or something.

the thing about most legacy players as that they are bad. that isn't to say that they are bad or dumb people, just that they tend to not play a narrow range of decks (a lot of people say legacy is cheap, which it is only if you buy a single deck and play it regardless of the situation) and that they are very reluctant to innovate. legacy GPs are always won by pros, while limited and constructed GPs often have random dudes who are good, but not pros, winning. great format though, don't mean to sound too negative.
