So my friend just bought 1,500 Magic cards off ebay and we just got them today. I'm pretty new to Magic and wanting to start a deck, but I don't know which color to go with. I know it sort of depends of the cards themselves to determine how good a deck will be. Again I'm new to this so I don't know if what I'm asking makes sense, but does each color have specific benefits and drawbacks? For example, does green have really big creatures, but lack in spells? If each color does have pros and cons, could someone please explain what they are? Thanks in advance.

For real though,

Green is all about creatures, either giant ones, or swarms of little ones. Players who like to use creatures to beat their opponents down like this (my first competitive deck was a green stompy deck that I loved). It also has a lot of mana acceleration. Either letting you seek out extra lands, or with creatures that give you more mana. However it lacks the ability to control a match if your opponent manages to shut your creatures down. This is usually the first color people play with because it's relatively simple.

Red is burn. Lots of spells that do direct damage, little creatures like goblins, and big flying dragons. It's not outright creature focused like green, but still has a decent selection. I find this is the second color people experiment with because it lets you learn to use sorceries and instants while still having creatures. Red Deck Wins is a long time staple of competitive magic, is easy and cheap to build, and does very constantly well. Its very versatile in that it's burn spells can kill off a creature, or hurt and opponent. Typically you're going to use spells like lightning bolt to kill off your opponents creatures while your own creatures chip away at their health.

White is creatures that rely on ability rather than power. Very few huge white creatures, but a whole lot of smaller guys with flying and first strike, meaning the small white guys are usually far more powerful than the small creatures from other colors. I have a white knight deck that cleans house with any other creature based deck. White is also where life gain lives and has some control mixed in as well, with a lot of cards that help protect you and your creatures or remove opponent's creatures as threats. White can be very versatile, but is mostly second fiddle to another color in multicolored decks, used to back up the main color.

Blue is control. Counter spells, bounce creatures back to hands, draw more cards, take extra turns. Blue is popular because nerds love to feel in control, and blue lets them lock down a match and dictate the pace and direction. I'd say blue is the most popular competitive color, although many players purposely avoid using it because they feel like it's cheap. It also has a lack of powerful creatures, it has a lot of fliers, but they tend to be more expensive that the fliers from other colors.

Black is death. Kill off creatures, drain life from opponents, march out an army of vampires, hurt yourself to hurt others. There are some big creatures but they tend to require the player to either harm themselves or risk harming themselves to use. One of blacks big mechanics is discard, which from a newer player's perspective can seem kind of "eh". But the ability to reduce your opponents options is very powerful, especially if you cast it on your first turn and suddenly your opponent is one card behind you. Black is often seen as weak by newer players because many of it's powerful abilities are less obvious at first glance.

From new player friendly to new player least friendly I'd rank the colors
1. Green
2. Red.
3. White
4. Black
5. Blue

It's the repackaged booster blister type packs (third party?) They have the back of the cards facing out and the only ones I have seen have a RoE booster in the back. The decks are side by side and take two pegs.

Hope that helps, sorry if it is confusing.

Thanks that helped. I ended up picking up two of them. They do fit on one peg though :)

One pack had the 60 card 11th ed Vampire deck and a deck of 40.

The other had the Tezzeret deck from that duel deck set minus the Planswalker. Kinda lame they pull that out. And the other deck is yet another 40 card one.

One pack was New Phyrexia and the other pack was Rise of Eldrazi.

I think they are a good deal. Surprised they'd include a pack from a new set.

I have question about turns and what you can do during them. I always hear people saying "before the end of your turn..." can you tap your creature before their turn ends then untap during your upkeep? Specifically steel overseer. I want to leave them untapped sometimes to block but can I still tap them after the combat step but before the end of my opponents turn then untapped them during my upkeep?

As long as the creature doesn't have summoning sickness and the ability isn't restricted (only use during your upkeep, play only as a sorcery) you can play it any time you could play an instant. So yes, you can play it at the end of the opponents turn, then untap during your untap phase.

That is actually the best way to play those cards, since you could use it as a blocker, than if you want use the ability.

That helps sooo much! Thank you! I've pretty much used green and black. I like black more personally right now with the decks my friends have built. But that definitely helps when I make a deck for myself because I'll experiment with all of them just to see what they're like.

I double checked and the cards I have are about 2k of the types I mentioned earlier. I can take a picture of the collection tonight if anyone's interested.

Wandering wind didn't seem to reply to my pm recently tho :(

I can send it out tomorrow~

Where and when are you going to be in HI? If it's on O'ahu and you want to play some Magic, I'll be back on island after next Saturday.

WanderingWind obviously gets the right to buy first since you and him had a deal going but I wouldn't mind at least seeing what you have Gvaz.

It's all you. My trip is going to take up my spare cash, because while I like Magic, I love luaus and coconut drinks even more...

EDIT: Besides Tappedout.net, what are some other deck building sites?

Soooo... met a girl, she plays magic, to help connect with her a bit better I picked up some premade decks and started playing/practising with my roomie.

Well after playing a lot, and fiddling with a deck a lot, I eventually found a play style I like, at least for now, and a deck I want to flesh out. It's a white and green deck, golem heavy.

From playing a lot, I seem to have problems with two particular things:

1. Flying enemies. I don't have a lot of flying creatures, or bonuses that help me defend against flying.

2. Targeting spells - spells that target individual creatures, that fucks up my entire mojo real easy, when a master splicer for example gets knocked out, and my 6 golems are pretty much crippled. I have one card (Spellstrike) that helps with that, but it's just one card.

So... can anyone give me any advice? Remember, I am extremely new to this, literally started playing like... 3 days ago. I'll be heading over to that girls place today, and she told me she'd let me go through her cards and take anything she wasn't using to flesh out my deck. I just don't know if there is anything I should definitely keep an eye out for.

Also, Phyrexian rebirth is a punch in the dick.

Okay! lemme take a cellphone pic (all I got) :(

Tried to show some rares standing up there, the blue one is a foil but, my phone is kinda shitty

That's about 2k cards there, if it's not obvious.

Np, glad I could help. I'm a big fan of those two colors myself.

I should also mention artifacts, which are a category by itself.
Some artifacts are colored, but most are non colored. They are made up of equipment to help your creatures, or items to help your play. Artifacts are also the backbone of two very powerful decks, affinity, which for a long time was very dominant in type two and still sees some play in legacy. And MUD in vintage, which is incredibly dominant. I am an artifact fan myself, and would play affinity more if it wasn't so looked down on. In fact I might throw together an affinity deck for the next big tournament like I did a few months ago.

Yeah it's still open to everyone, $100 obo, just discuss it with me. I'd like to ship it sooner than later so lemme know here or via pm

I have a friend looking to unload 2 Jace, the Mindsculptors. Also I personally am looking to unload a foil playset of signed Sensei's Divining Tops from Champions of Kamigawa. ANy interest in either? Edit: Can you PM with interest I wouldn't want to clog this thread :)

Depends on how much the divining tops are

Anybody go to the Gameday Event today? I ended up going to two different ones. The first was about 18 people and I ended up in the top 8, but barely. There I played a life gain deck (used the copy artifact/creature from NPH, don't know what the deck is) and lost because I didn't pay attention. He went for infinite life, but I had stolen one of his creatures (captivating vampire is pretty good) that gives life with my vampires, so I would have had infinite life also. I scooped after looking at what he was doing and then gave him back his card and said "Fuck" Whole reason I took that card was to keep him from getting his combo off and winning. Would have one since I was playing 62 and he searched for cards. Damn

Second event I just got killed. The decks weren't that great, but I just was getting crap (one match mulled twice, 6 and 4(!)) and that was pretty much that. Still had fun and was the first time I played standard since NPH released, and saw some interesting things.

Oh, and fuck Batterskull/Stoneforge. Every fucking person I played had that shit, fucking ridiculous.

EDIT: I'm also interested in the Jaces, but the price would have to be right. He's getting ready to rotate out and I don't think he sees nearly as much play in Legacy, so will probably pick him up then anyways.

Ya, I went and came in 3rd at the gameday thing. Ya, now that white event decks are out, batterskull/sword+stoneforge is going to be overdone for a while.

Congrats on third. Not too bad.

I thought they would be a little more prevalent, but seven out of seven? Really missing Magic before the internet. It was so much fun sitting around with friends or at the shop running through ideas. We used to actually laugh at the people 'stealing' the InQuest decks.

Well, you gotta remember that it just came out yesterday so people are horny to use it, especially after spending the money so it should drop but still be more prevalent in the next couple of weeks. And don't congrat too much, there were only 8 people at the shop. :P I had to run the white deck with a couple rares switched out since I stupidly forgot my deck at home somehow. Luckily I had my rares which made a not so bad deck pretty good.

Had an insane draft today. Won 2 then lost my last match to a Karn deck. Then found out that my shop is giving away a commander deck of choice to the winner if this upcoming FNM!

So I played for the first time blind in a few years. I did a SOM 4-3-2-2 draft and I got 2nd place. I was pretty pumped. The game that sent me to the finals was intense. I was at one life, no creatures of mine were left, they all died helping me survive the turn before. And I pulled White Sun's Zenith, and plopped down 8 2/2 tokens :lol

Needless to say he conceded, he was at 18 life.

Here is the deck that got me there.

2s0ehhu.png

I also just pulled a foil Sword of War and Peace. Should I sell trade it online for some boosters to ease the cost of drafting?

It's honestly up to you. Do you want it? If you don't you can probably trade it for 2 regular swords of war and peace if you play standard at all.

I would like to play standard, I am just not able to play using real cards. MTGO is better suited for me. Does anyone know a solid constructed standard deck that doesn't cost an arm and a leg I can try to start putting together? It will give me something to play with instead of drafting 3+ times a night. Oh god the money :(

You don't have a decent collection of cards with that much drafting? :O

Dropped $25 on 3 Inkmoth Nexus. Never thought I'd spend so much on Magic. It was supposed to be a casual past time. Now I want to shell out and enter tournaments. :( I think I just need 4 Verdant Catacombs and my B/G infect deck is near complete. 2 more Phyrexian Crusaders and 4 Inquisitions couldn't hurt. *wallet am cry

I just started 2 days ago and its addictive as hell. :(

After not playing for 3+ years I don't know any good decks or strategies anymore lol

So any good decks that aren't expensive as hell?

Go for a basic infect deck, imho.
Ichorclaw Myr, 1/1 infect elf for one, put in a lot of cheap green +x/+x and/or +trample spells, or a few Putrefax, and go for it. There is also an event deck for this idea.

Or alternatively, build a black/green infect horror, with Fume Spitters, Phyrexian Crusaders, a lot of creature destorys, and a few source of proliferate, and you are ready to go.

I roll with them all. Because what I found out is that each one of us is...

a weenie. . .
a geek. . .
a anger case . . .
a fairy-loving smasher. . .
And a goth.

Does that answer your question?

Sincerely yours, The Bored at Work Club.

So for the commander cards, I like how they figured releasing a R join forces earthquake would be too busted, so they just put it on a dragon instead. Kinda lame of them, seeing as red is not the best of colors in commander.

Nope. But our localest card shop only bought two of the white ones. The two that I had pre-ordered....

Stoneforge Mystic + Puresteel Paladin + Batterskull is awesome.

My LGS pre-ordered enough, but now they're left with a bunch of the green decks that no one will buy. I picked up two to make a white weenie, but I don't have any of the money equipment cards that are required to smash face in these sorts of decks. Maybe I'll put together a budget one anyway.

I believe Wal-Mart may get them in. Expect to pay $35-40 after taxes. If you shop at Wal-Mart for MTG products, you've seen how ridiculous Canadian MSRPs are. I really don't know who buys these things; I assume people simply steal them.

$50 before taxes for a Mirrodin Besieged/New Phyrexia fat pack when the Canadian dollar has been at near par/above par for the past few years? Eat a dick, Wizards. Eat a syphilitic, AIDS-ridden dick.
