I just opened on Karn Liberated in this SOM draft.

Pulled a Garruk. That's my 3rd legendary card pull ever along with sword of b&m and karn. :D I really wanna trade it for 2 gideons tho.

Speaking of Sword of b&m, say my opponent cast Pacifism on my creature. On my turn, I equip it with the sword. Will the enchantment go away? Sword of b&m has protection from R/W btw.

Got a bunch of Mythics. Two Planeswalkers, Grave Titan, two from Phyrexia. One from an older set that's about a $15 card right now.

Use the DEBT mnemonic for determining protection effects.

Damage
Enchant/Equip
Block
Target

So yes, if you equip SoBaM to a creature with Pacifism, the Pacifism will drop off when the requip effect resolves.

Limited: I feel like there aren't nearly enough common Werewolves/Vampires to just make a tribal deck unless you had a really good reason too, such as the Mayor or the Vampire generator.

Which is a shame really, I was looking forward to drafting vamps/wolves as I would've drafted elves or soldiers in Onslaught.

(And some of the vampires in red are kind of weird and don't really feel vampire-y at all, except for the +1/+1 token stuff)

Also, the set just seems slow in general.

So I bought DotP.

Wow, I suck so bad at this game. Either that or my draws have been absolute shit. I have to try at least 3 times on every opponent in the campaign before I beat them.

What deck are you using? Are you mulliganing (and/or restarting as there is no penalty for that) crappy opening hands?

Yeah, I'm mulliganing (though I thought it was 6/5/4 etc, not 7/6/5/4) and restarting to get a decent hand. I'm using decks at random because I don't have a sense of what the opponent's deck can do. I don't know all the ins and outs of cards and their combos, so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it.

Then again, since there is no penalty for restarting, I should be doing it until I have the absolute best starting hand I can possibly get. Takes too much time though.

With regard to starting hands, is the most optimal one (in general, not pertaining to certain decks) one with 3 or 4 lands and 2 or 3 of 1-3 mana cost cards? That's the guideline I'm using for now.

How are the theme decks?

Would it be decent for my friends and I (3 of us) to buy 3 theme decks and only play with those? How are they by themselves? Or should we all just get 3 boosters each and have a booster draft, then pool them and shuffle them for future drafts?

I'm really trying to avoid buying boosters lol.

Any premade deck would be better than a 3 man draft.

Are drafts more popular than sealed deck? With sealed deck it wouldn't matter how many people did it right?

A normal draft is cheaper and maybe a bit more social for a FNM. If by sealed deck you mean everyone gets 6 boosters, then yeah that can be done for any number of people and gives a good use of boosters amongst friends while keeping the playing field level on monetary terms.

Now the full Innistrad set is out, is there a good primer for the prerelease? A local store is running 4 (2 draft 2 sealed I think) with a raffle for a booster box so would like to get some wins in. Prefer the set as a whole and not card by card.

I thought MTGO would get Innistrad at the same time as the paper game.

Fml.

No, it's always two months after the newest set, isn't it?

The Banned and Restricted announcement will be live tonight at midnight (est). My Magic twitter list (which contains a bunch of pros, top level players, and wotc/scg/etc employees) has been abuzz with speculation. It's been really fun to read, I can't wait to see the verdict tonight. Only 4 hours now.

Would this be bannings for Standard or what?

Potentially for any format. Most of the talk has been for Modern and Legacy though. Modern was hugely combo-based at the PT, so changes are expected to change to balance things. Legacy has been good but problematic since Mental Misstep was printed, so some change is hoped for. Same with Dismember, but I'm not sure what format they were referring to.

Highly doubt there will be any T2 bannings at this point.

With PT Philly behind us, we can expect some bannings (mainly unbannings IMO) for Modern. Some overdue changes for Legacy as well.

I'm hedging my bets that Bitterblossom becomes unbanned....been slowly hoarding the last few weeks. :lol

This is what I'm expecting, they were understandably heavy-handed in the original bannings... but I think we can see that some of them were unnecessary.

Ah, sweet Stongeforge is coming back!

More bannings? And mental misstep is going to be one?

I could see restricting it? But outright banning it would be silly.

I have like 7 of them. I hope it doesn't get banned

Looks like Ponder is getting a change. It is currently restricted in Type 1 and banned in Modern, so it could be either or both.

Aww hell no.

It's not banned in Modern (yet, anyway). Its crazy that they are going to ban Ponder instead of something like Rite of Flame though

Although, I would love for them to unban Jace and SFM in standard. Give those cards one last hurrah in standard before the format rotates in a week

Modern
Blazing Shoal is banned.
Cloudpost is banned.
Green Sun's Zenith is banned.
Ponder is banned.
Preordain is banned.
Rite of Flame is banned.

Extended
Jace, the Mind Sculptor is banned.
Mental Misstep is banned.
Ponder is banned.
Preordain is banned.
Stoneforge Mystic is banned.

Legacy
Mental Misstep is banned.

Vintage
Fact or Fiction is no longer restricted.

Goddamn about time Misstep was banned in Legacy. Also, my MTG Twitter list (as well as #mtg and #banprediction) is exploding, it's wonderful.

They banned Mental Misstep in Legacy? Wasn't that like 90% of the point of the card?

Their intent was to make a colorless counter to balance things. In reality, it was still blue and it worked best in blue aggro-control/control.

I've said it before, the only way to balance blue is to not print any blue cards for a few years and let the other colors catch up.

Unfortunately, it turned out poorly. Looking at high-level tournaments, instead of results having blue and nonblue decks playing Mental Misstep, there are more blue decks than ever. The DCI is banning Mental Misstep, with the hopes of restoring the more diverse metagame that existed prior to the printing of Mental Misstep.
Hm, okay, interesting

It's just a sophisticated way of saying "good lord this card was ridiculously busted."

The modern changes are huge. Really interesting to see them willing to shake the format up so much. The Ponder + Preordain bannings are pretty hilarious though.

I like the changes. Its fine to have busted combos (Splinter Twin/Pestermite, Through the Breach/Emrakul), but its now way harder to find the pieces and get them out quickly. I'm surprised they didn't unban anything though.

No suprises on the Extended list. With Worlds coming up soon, and having Extended as a format, it was just going to be standard circa New Phyrexia release. At least now there is a chance that there might be some new decks popping up.

Honestly I have no idea why they're keeping Extended as a format at all. Should have just did away with it.

They're probably still trying to figure out whether Modern or Extended gets the nod as the Winter/Spring PTQ season.

Someone one the Wizard's boards is whining because his $100 foil Japanese Misstep is now worthless. I find it difficult to have any sympathy for someone who can afford a hundred bones on an uncommon.

Yeah, no sympathy for them, especially on a card with such a target on it's head.

Also, this is post 5000 in this thread, through 100 pages. Congrats mtg-gaf.
