so guys, I have a portal three kingdoms deck that I shelled out money for, but im trying to set up stuff with regards to horsemanship. can you give me some white cards that dick over an opponent if they are attacked directly. My main card for that is farrel's mantle, but I want more.

Each day of the SCG Opens is now a 10K. Jeeeeeeez.

Yeah, and the entry fee to each constructed tournament? 40 DOLLARS. Absurd.

Quick Soulbound question that came up at our prerelease multiple times- If you have a unbounded creature out with Soulbound on the battlefield, and you play another soulbound creature, can you bound them with both abilites?

Yes. The guy that tied for first used two soulbonds of lifelink and deathtouch and it was annoying as crap! The most common mistake I saw at the prerelease were people trying to unbond a bonded creature. Can't do it.

Soo i got back into MTG again. Last time i played i think Fallen Empires was the last set.. or was it was the Urza's , don't remember which was the last one. Was a long ago. Now i see what my cards would have been worth if i kept them and im like F^*&^#. Ah well.
So for people in TO, whats a good place online or otherwise to get some packs/cards now? I know 401 convenience back in the day has becomes 401 games. I went to a Avacyn Pre-release. Went 1-2.. stayed till 5 Am.. O_O had a lot of fun though.

If Fallen Empires was the last set you saw then I can't blame you for quitting.

What kind of stuff did you used to have, if you don't mind my asking?

I didn't understand Soulbond at first, so some guy did this to me:

I had two of my angelic walls out and a silverblade paladin, unbonded. He has nothing out. On his turn he plays zealous conscripts, and steals my silverblade paladin.

This is where it gets hairy. He claims he can soulbond my silverblade paladin to his zealous conscripts. I had no idea how this worked at the time, so it made sense and I trusted the guy.

Clearly, this was illegal, but it didn't even cross my mind at the time.

It wasn't that bad, cause I only lost my two walls, but I could have lost that game there if I didn't have the walls out.

Well at that point i was in highschool so i didnt have much spending money. The complaints mainly at that point were too much printing of the sets making them not worth much, sorta like what baseball and hockey cards went through and reprinting of some of the good cards.

My deck was 4 colour. Green/Red/Blue/White

Big Cards( i had all dual lands, some of them beta as that was my aim, get everything blackbordered)

Green Mox
Red Mox
Timewalk
Ancestral Recal
Berzerk
Tundras
Plateaus
Tropical islands
Taigas
Savannah
Psionic Blasts
Serendib efreets
City of brass
Swords to plowshares
Fork
Candelabra of Tawnos
Birds of paradise

Lots of direct damage/Creature buffs

Giant growths, Blood lusts, Unstable mutations

Lightning bolts, Chain lightnings.

Weenie creatures

Llanowar elves, savannah lions, kird apes, elvish archers, orhithopters..

It was a quick weenie/heavy damage deck. Used to work awesome. I doubt many of those cards are worth as much now other than the power 9.

When you think about it, walls in this game don't even make SENSE. When creatures attack in this game, they are charging forth to strike at you, and you throw other creatures in their way to block. Makes sense, right? This is why flying creatures can't be blocked by most ground creatures - they can't be intercepted.

Why the fuck are my creatures always running into immobile walls? "Oh shit, how do I get past this small barrier of crap piled up?":

Some walls span a long range, but then that makes one wonder: why can't all of those walls block as much as they want? They aren't moving, so how can I choose what they block and what they don't block?

Why do my creatures attack the wall? Why not just climb over it? Does my legendary vampire really punch the brick and go "Next time, wall, next time!"?

Those werent all my cards.. those were just in my deck. Yea they were all sold. At that point in time i didnt think i was going to play anymore and didnt have the same amount of time to keep playing. Some of my friends used to play in High school and was a big game in the cafeteria. Just not at my school. So with lack of time and with a part time job, car etc, couldnt afford to keep at it. I figured since things were headed in the direction were everything was getting reprinted, icy manipulator etc, that who knows what will happen so i sold my cards.

Back at that time though, revised was the set. It was everywhere. Legends/Antiquities you were able to get packs but were tough and expensive. More so with Legends. Tourneys used to give out legends boosters as prizes. Arabian nights was a huge power set. You could have 4 dual lands of each kind. Alpha/beta cards were big deals. I think i got around 550 for the cards which at that point was a lot for a highschool kid. I remember people used to freak out over spending like $2 on a chain lightning.

My friend who got me back into it, kept most of his cards since he kept playing. At the last pre-release he sold his UL Lotus and 2 moxes. He got 1350 for them because of condition. I had to make a new DCI membership card at the tourney. I didnt have my old one from way back.

This is a great rant :D

The walls seemed like a good choice in the sealed prerelease tourney, because I was sure most people would only be able to play typical aggro style decks, and having flying walls out early was sure to shut a lot of stuff down.

At 13/13 he should have trample. Anything above a certain point really should, honestly.

Perhaps if you think about yourself as planeswalker, and your creatures as chess pieces, and you move them about during combat?

So this is why I say what your opponent did was illegal. Your paladin was already on the battlefield. Soulbond works if a creature enters the battlefield. Your Paladin was already on the battlefield when he took control so that doesn't trigger Soulbond. Zealous Conscripts hits the battlefield before taking control of Paladin, so it's not targetable for Soulbond. Now if he brings out another creature, ideally another haste creature, then sure, he can now Soulbond the two. I'm thinking though, once your Paladin returns at end of turn, your original Soulbond is now broken.

Right, changing ownership of the paladin isn't "entering the battlefield", it's just changing sides. That's how I understand it now.

That Angel intro deck actually looks pretty alright. Might pick that up if I see it at the store for MSRP.

Or maybe the Red/White human one. Hmm.

Okay customer service activated my Magic Online account since they wouldn't send me my activation code but I'm completely lost. I opened the pack marked "Starter" or whatever and it gave me a load of commons and uncommons and more packs which I then opened and ended up with like 900 cards.
I have no idea what to do now, don't they have preconstructed decks in this?

No. Now welcome to Magic. Start building decks, bitch! :D!

(You can use the planeswalkers as a preconstructed deck based on DotP 09/12/13 IIRC)

But building decks is hard! *starts to netdeck*
To be frank I just registered because I wanted to try this "Cube" format but I have no idea where to find it or how to play it or what it is exactly haha.

One of the packs that they gave you (the "Planeswalker") pack, had a bunch of gold-bordered cards in it. Those cards can only be used in Constructed Planeswalker rooms; Planeswalker packs give you much better cards for much less money than you'd get by buying boosters, but the restriction is that you can only use them in those rooms.

But yeah - go nuts and build a deck! I just joined as well; I haven't tried really constructing anything just yet though. I've just done a draft so far; hopefully I'll find time to do another draft or two this weekend and then start thinking about construction.

It's drafting. You're going to be building a deck there as well.

Looks like the guy who leaked the New Phyrexia godbook got off easy.

Continued investigation on Guillaume Matignon's suspension for the leak of the Magic: The Gathering New Phyrexia godbook has resulted in a reduction of his suspension from 3 years to 1 year. While Matignon was not entitled to play in certain sanctioned tournaments because of his knowledge of the set, he has been cleared of the responsibility of the leak. As such, the suspension related to this infraction ends today.

Hard to believe a year has passed already.

Weird that GodbookGate came up just now. I tried 2 different methods for spoilers. With INN/DKA I went full black out. Nothing spoiled. With AVR, I went along with all the spoiler talk.

I got to say, with AVR, I'm much less excited about launch day. I think a real part of the game for me is the surprise. Surprise of opening packs, finding new cards, figuring out combos and tricks on my own.

I think I'm going try a 50/50 split with RTR. I'm going to learn about some of the mechanics, maybe a couple of the early cards, then black out until launch.

Been goofing around with this self mill deck a bit lately, lots of fun.

The mana can be a bit dodgy but it works out pretty well.

Haha my boyfriend plays MTG and I kinda want to as well but it's the kind of game where the learning curve is way too fucking steep to even stand a chance. Oh well, maybe one day.

Er-no it isn't.

Lands = engine to pay for

costs = payment for

creatures = attackers
instants = spells that resolve quickly.
enchantments = enhancements for creatures/your attackers to be buffed or stopping enemies creatures from attacking
sorceries = non-instants that are buffs in general or spells that must be done before attacking or at the end of your turn.

Attack with creatures and spells that damage the enemy to kill their 20 life before they kill yours.

Well I know the rules, more or less. But there are so many damn cards and combos and all and I don't see how I could even remotely catch up with that.

And I played one game with one of his decks and won lol (dumb luck I guess)

Yeah, the basics of Magic are something you can learn in about fifteen minutes at most. Beyond that is learning basic abilities, but it's a very intuitive process.

Strategy at a competitive level does take a lot of work and time, but that's neither here nor there.

For casual play, you really don't need to keep up with all the cards, just the new keywords that get introduced every few months.

Honestly, half the fun of Magic for me is arguing with friends on specific rules or combos. There's so many possibilities and it makes researching pretty enjoyable. I'm still questioning or learning something new all the time a year after starting this game.

But there are so many damn cards and combos and all and I don't see how I could even remotely catch up with that.

That takes experience. Just need to play more. There are plenty of card interaction combos that I cannot see eventhough I've been playing for almost 2 decades...especially in the EDH environment. There are tons of funny card interactions in the EDH format...since almost everything goes!

My recommendation would be to find one card in particular, or just a handful (start small) that you really like for whatever reason, and then build around it. From that one card (or handful) find other cards that do things that would help that one card, or would synergize (synergize is not a word? What?) with that card, etc.

I found that's a fun way for new players to make decks. Don't be discouraged either, start small and know that the first deck you build is gonna need lots of tweaking to get up to snuff. Everyone's decks go through lots of tweaking, too, not just players who are learning.

Just find cards you think are cool, and have fun. That's the most important part!

I don't know if it's my group's thing (it's mostly me, my boyfriend, his brother and brother's girlfriend) but the new people usually got attached to some silly cards.
Back in Ravnica my boyfriend was an Izzet fan an his favourite cards were like Cowardice (he liked the artwork of the guy shitting a sword), Telepathy (reminded him of Emma Frost), Leap of Flame (reminded him of Jean Gray and the Phoenix) and Tibor and Lumia (because it were two people in a single card).
I remember we built him a super cheap shotgun Izzet deck with Gelectrode/Wee Dragonauts and tons of instants/sorceries to fuel them. It was quite swingy and had some god turns in which it smashed through my UG Snakes deck, but he didn't really like it unless it had Cowardice, Telepathy, Leap of Flame and Tibor and Lumia (who actually killed his Gelectrodes lol).
And when the brother's girlfriend started playing she ONLY played Vampires and Liliana Vess, nothing else.
