You really, really don't want a box of M13 unless you need the commons/uncommons. Get singles.

Yeah, at first I really really wanted one. But honestly, as much as I love the fun cards printed like Battle of Wits, I would hate to spend $100 on a box and get multiples of the fun silly rares.

I'll be putting the money I normally use for a box towards singles, a few boosters for the fun of it, and maybe a couple of the starter decks.

There just aren't enough value rares in this set to disperse the cost of the cards evenly enough. (Making a box a bad idea) The PWs are very narrow role-players, and so the Dragon/Angel and a few of the new good rares (like Thragtusk) are gonna get inflated while everything else stays steady.

I thought Bolas actually did not want the Phyrexians to come into power? Wasn't that why he sent Tezzeret to Mirrodin in the first place? To destroy Karn, and thus hopefully removing their direction and leadership? Now the Phyrexian Praetors all kinda don't work together (not that they liked eachother before, but when Karn was still around they had to follow the Father of Machines).

And shit, I really want to see Niv Mizzet face off against Bolas. Really really really really really badly.

Isn't that like Batman vs Darkseid? An interesting battle at the very least but I don't know if Mizzet's "prep time" can actually compare to Bolas' innate power without feeling like an ass pull of some sort.

Niv Mizzet + Planeswalker Spark vs Bolas.

The entirety of the Magic community collectively jizzes, flooding the world with semen.

Well we do know Jace meets with Mizzet. He might be like

"yo gimme yo spark for a second"

*walks to Bolas*

"bitch."

*slaps his face silly then walks back to jace*

"k im done"

That's five S's!

Oh goblins, you crack me up.

I sincerely doubt Jace would ever hand his spark over to anyone, though. I feel like he'd sooner peace out and planeswalk out of there if shit ever got too real.

Ajani forced Bolas into a stalemate, so I wouldn't be surprised if Niv could hold his own against him. Ajani is a planeswalker, though, but I wouldn't underestimate Niv's capabilities.

I doubt Niv will become a planeswalker, so that fantasy is out the window. haha

Honestly Niv could just head the assault against Bolas, as the strategical leadership. That would make sense.

Yea I'm skipping this set as far as boxes go. There aren't even that many singles that are really exciting me.

I guess I'll wait and see how it plays when I do some mtgo drafts with it.

Ugh, I'm still debating whether I should do the pre-release & release parties for this set. It's just so janky, and the art is all over the place stylistically and thematically. I'm far better served buying singles, but damn it, I do want to play! Maybe I'll just do one for fun at the closer LGS.

This is what I said pages ago and everybody thought I was hating on them. I like you guys, I want you all to spend your money wisely on Magic items.

I don't even see how it's possible to make your money back on a box right now unless you pull a foil Ajani or Liliana and flip it in the first week.

For those of us who only play on MTGO, it's going to be even worse. My only real decision will be to decide if I need to snap up a couple of Ajanis and Hellkites right away, or wait for the price to settle.

What was the last set that wasn't like that though? I think the closest is maybe innistrad due to the dual lands and snaps but even that had a bunch of cheap cards, even the mythics besides lili and geist were nothing. Probably next highest was garruk and he's like $10 if that now..

How do I get the buy-a-box-promo?!

Buy it as a single?

Liliana was a 60 dollar card for at least a month after release while everyone was trying to push Frites. Garruk also spiked up a bit for Pod I think. Snapcaster was a 30 dollar rare. Geist 25+. A lot of the rares were junk but at least the dual lands were worth more than the booster pack that you opened them out of.

Innistrad had supply issues at launch that subsided.

The DOTP 13 intro suggests that Jace is somehow integral to Bolas' plan, so he'll be the one to foil it in the end in all likelihood. Either that or the plan is to unleash an even more broken Jace card onto the world.

Isn't that pretty much what I said? It's the most recent one I can think of that was worth it and just like with the others you would have to flip the cards quickly since they are nowhere close to the same ballpark now. I think that's true of any set if you dump it quickly in the first month or so it's much more beneficial.

Yaaaah Fog Bank reprinted. Love that card.

Krenko is pretty goddamn nuts. At least in DOTP. Raging goblin turn 1, krenko's command turn 2, goblin chieftan turn 3, krenko turn 4, tap for 5 more goblins, turn 5 tap for 10 more goddamn goblins etc... If not dealt with immediately he can make an absurd amount of tokens very very quickly.

Oh and this game was fucking ridiculous.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing here but pointing out that supply issues meant it was ridiculously popular until the second print run arrived. Pretty sure the initial printing was similar to SOM. But this just shows what happens when you have a good set. I don't foresee m13 going over too well. Blue/white looks too strong in limited, even if you have to force it.

Yeah, I wasn't disagreeing here either! Just expanding with more info but at least you could speculate on rares/mythics. Things like Hero of Bladehold, Wolfir Silverheart, Entreat and Bonfire started out really low and over time shot up quickly. I only see Thragtusk really popping up like that. Red just doesn't have a good pool to take advantage of the mythic dragon. Ajani and Liliana will fall like every other PW has since Jace from the pre-order highs. There's just so much junk in m13 and most of the stuff that isn't is either reprints (Vampire Nocturnus) or available in precon (the legendary creature cycle).

I'll probably just wind up getting a set of the 5 precons to get the foil legendaries for EDH/Commander for 70 bucks that will leave me with a total of 10 boosters to open just for fun or draft with. Not really looking forward to limited for the next two and a half months but maybe this is a good thing since it's summer anyway. :)

I think Thragtusk will definitely rise.
I could see Master of Pearl Trident, Odric, and Talrand all possibly rising
And Quiron Dryad might go up a bit once Ravnica comes out.

But thats not a whole lot of potential. Will only be buying a fat pack, first time in a long time I won't buy at least one box. Although a friend is pressuring me to trade him three beat up grindstones for a box. I might take that deal since the grindstones are probably worth $40 at most.

Thragtusk has the most potential, he's just busted in Pod and probably will be until rotation. New Merfolk lord has absolutely no support right now so initial demand will be from Legacy players picking up their playsets, can't imagine it being more than 5 dollars after the initial month. Quirion is a reprint and doesn't fit into an existing archetype and is extremely awful with how much Vapor Snag is running around, it'll be interesting to see if people run Unsummon instead after rotation.

Messing around with my pre-boros deck in Cockatrice. Anyone up for a game later?

Definitely not going to buy a box now, just going to buy singles.

why would it be so tough? skinny legs and all.

I had a dream last night where I opened up a pack of M13 and got like six rares, including a foil Thundermaw Hellkite... :(

Damn it, I love dreams like that >.>;;;

In other news:

I can't. Stop. Playing. Modern. This is like some sort of horrible addiction, but at least this one's profitable, unlike those goddamn IPA drafts...

After a painfully average (something like 49% winrate) showing with Boros aggro, I decided to just cut my losses, sell the crap I won drafting, and build a Naya pod deck.

I had no idea this format was so healthy. There's like ten decks I have to be prepared for at all times, and I have no idea how to build my sideboard.

The best part? I think my deck was a little under 200 tix to build, although I did get everything fairly cheap from bots that hadn't been updated in a while. Still, I can't imagine it being over 250 on mtgotraders.

That's... cheaper than a standard deck. And significantly more fun than standard. Queues don't fire as often, but there's still a ton of daily events, so I don't even care!

The only downside I can see, in terms of making money at least, is that the average modern player is significantly better than the average standard player. I'm pretty sure I'm playing against nothing but 1800+ players in dailies, which is a little shocking at first.

I'm just worried it's going to end up in the green pre-con and I'll buy 4 for way too much.

Fuck it. I'm pulling the trigger.

Honestly, it could stabilize at $10, but that's the absolute peak. Snapcaster Mage is 16 and it's a staple in literally every format. I wouldn't preorder thragtusk at 5...

The tricky part is that w/ such few "money" cards n M13, the ones that do exist may start to inflate. This happened w/ M12 to a degree as well.

Ya know, if it is between "underpowered core set" and "Titans ruining everything" I think I might be okay with how this turned out.

As someone who tends to gravitate in and out of playing MTG Online for the past several years, I fully endorse this sentiment. My interest in the game dropped tremendously once the Titans were printed, and stayed quite low once they earned a reprint for god knows what reason. Just horribly boring for tournament play.

Thanks for the advice guys. I know I'm running the risk of getting burned, but I'd rather pay $40 for 4 Thragtusks now than be tempted to buy boxes and hope to get them there. It's literally the only card I feel is a 'must have' for myself in this set. If it goes down, so be it.

Worldwake was the biggest offender in recent memory. Jace caused people to buy boxes in search for him, but aside from manlands, little else was desirable. Once cards like Avenger of Zendikar and Stoneforge Mystic found their places, prices shot up dramatically.

I preordered soooo many cards from that set. People are getting better at pricing, tho.

About a year ago my local Wal-Mart got a bunch of worldwake fat packs, this was before jace was banned as well. So of course I bought 4 of them for something like 40 bucks each. Only opened two stoneforges from them unfortunately.
Now I look at the prices for those fat packs and want to shank myself for opening them. Should have saved them.

I'm completely new to Magic and have no clue where to begin when purchasing a starter deck or just a deck in general. I want to buy two decks for my girlfriend and I to play. I read a few Amazon reviews saying that the starter decks aren't suggested, instead buy a theme deck. Can anyone help me out on what decks to buy to get my girlfriend and I started? I read the OP, but I'm looking for everyone's opinion.

Um. Well, yeah. I got a good starting point. You live in NA?
