I don't work weekends so I'll not be going anywhere near my car this weekend. The drivers in my area are already insane enough, without adding snow and ice into the mix.

I love snow though, so I'm pretty excited.

Like, I totally understand that southern states are generally not prepared to handle snow but as a Wisconsinite I always chuckle when cities shutdown after a couple of inches of show. But seriously, stay safe SouthernGAF

Nope, no winter gear like that at all. Stay home or die, that is the rule of Southern Snow

Ah. Ok, if cities don't provide public services like snowplow trucks in the morning or pay workers to clear out major public sidewalks, I can see how this might be a problem.

Do cities in the south pre-salt the roads and have snowplows pave out the snow in early morning or are people left to their own devices?

What snowplows?

Although, GADOT did learn from 2014 and bought a few more. But when you average an inch a year, it's not exactly a smart budgetary decision.

Pretty sure there are some trucks preparing to spread brine on the roads for the weekend, from what I heard on the radio (Atlanta). Problem is that we don't have many of those trucks...

...so stay at home or die is more or less accurate yeah...haha

It makes sense, why invest in a quarter million for equipment you will use for a day every 2-3 years

I've never seen the city do any of that lol. Maybe they don't have accesss to a snow plow at all because why have one in every city in North Carolina. I might just never see it tho

East TN here. There is talk of 2 or MAYBE 3 inches of snow and if you live in the south you know what that means........every store is being sacked right now and everything will shut down.

Greenville is a town that can take twenty minutes to cross because a train parked on Arlington. Yeah, snow plows are a wet dream.

Crashing this plane... with no survivors!
Even in the Midwest, I can understand why these small snowfalls cause so much trouble. Driving on a snowy, unplowed road is incredibly dangerous.

The biggest shock for me since moving to the south about snow storms is that bread, milk and eggs always sell out. Bottled water as well usually.

Now, in the 10+ years I've lived in Atlanta, I can count on maybe 1 hand where there was enough of a storm to keep me away from making it to my neighborhood grocery store for more than 24 hours. There hasn't been one that kept me inside for more than 48.

The shelves will be bare by tomorrow morning.

My only guess at this phenomenon is that southerners love to eat French toast on snow days.

Fuuuuuuck this weekend. The metro ATL area is gonna be a pain in the ass. Better find a warmer jacket...

Thank God I got the ok to work from home tomorrow.

Got my beer, maybe I'll order a pizza tomorrow. Closest place isn't even a mile away thankfully.

1993 was a doozy. There were drifts six feet high around our house. I think it was 2011, or 2010, where I drove in on the third day after and 285 was still a buttclencher. 2014 was bad for a couple of days because side streets and neighborhoods never got treated. Rednecks on 4-wheelers had a blast, though.

Ayyyy I live in Greenville too.

2003-2005.

yeah...I'm from northern ontario and this amount of snow is laughable but that's because they are prepared for it. And people get winter tires. Even on major snow days, schools don't technically close, at worst the buses don't run and kids have an excuse not to go.

Doesn't mean people treat snow-covered roads with the proper respect. I haven't seen anything like that picture but on the first snow of the year you can expect to see many cars on the side of the road. For a long time I lived in the middle of nowhere and the plows didn't come often...I know how to drive in snow, but seeing idiots go 120kph in the middle of a blizzard goes a long way towards keeping me off the roads until it clears up.

Just think of how much money you can make being the only Uber in the area with snow tires. What's surge pricing like in a snowstorm?

I'm in VB. They're calling for us to get 7-11" of snow! Bring it on!

Glad it's happening on a Saturday for us though.

I'm in VB visiting family and had planned on heading back to FL on Saturday. That's going to change to leaving tomorrow to skirt around it.

I was up here the last time there was that historic blizzard of 12 or 13 inches, too.

I am the bringer of snow. This one's on me, southern GAF.

First snowstorm since I've moved.

No longer will I be trapped during icy conditions :D

I lived in a house on a hill with a steep driveway in the shadow of two larger houses and a tree line that guaranteed ice wouldn't melt for days after everyone else.

EDIT: CharlotteGAF represent!

My brother is flying to Raleigh on Sunday to go back to school. I wonder how bad that'll go.

Post I just saw Reddit that may be relevant for you:

Airline pilot here...

Saturday operations at RDU should be almost all cancelled I am assuming. Sunday expect a lot of the early morning flights to be delayed and/or cancelled. If planes don't come in Saturday night there will be no planes available for early sunday morning flights. Not sure what time your friends flight is but most airlines waive change fees for weather events such as this.

I live in Knoxville, but I am from Johnson City (NE TN). I swear it is chaos every time they mention snow. It is like people lose rational thought. That said everyone once and awhile (especially in the Tri-Ciites area) it turns out to be a bad one (see winter of 93).

Snow + South =

When I read "Major snowstorm" I scoffed. But then saw the totals with numbers tipping 12+ inches, and yeah, that's snow cred. Although Atlanta is looking at like 1" ... so... c'mon now.

Stay indoors if you can, grab some beers.

Eh, I live in one of the snowiest cities in the US... 12+ inches is major no matter what.

Local forecasts in Atlanta are calling for 2 inches southside of Atlanta and 3-5 inches north of i20, or they were at noon. Havent been able to check it since.

Grew up in NC but spent time in Kansas the reason towns shut down is because the people aren't used to it. They didn't grow up in it they don't know how to drive in it or salt sidewalks or put chains on tires etc. it's a huge difference lol. I've seen ppl pour water on iced windows and cause them to break. Now that I'm back in Greenville I look forward to the town being shutdown.
Greenville NC?

Forecasts are starting to finally get medium confidence on volume and makeup of precip and it looks like Raleigh-Durham is getting the worst of this. Hope everyone in Wake county/chapel hill/the dirty D doesn't mind spending a weekend (and more if you are like me and on a side road that takes forever to melt) house bound.

My university just sent me a notification saying classes were cancelled this Monday, now I know why. They don't want the chaos that was "snowpocalypse" to happen again. I love the snow, so bring it on!

Having lived in Charlotte for 7 years, I can confirm that even the threat of this storm will shut down the city.

Also, in before any "bread and milk" jokes are made.

My Dad has been there since '08 and pretty much a dusting shuts everything down for at least a day.

Gotta make a Cheerwine and Bread run

Grocery stores are already packed with people, couldn't even get into the Harris Teeter, parking lot was packed with cars trying to find a parking spot. Had to settle for the damn Food Lion.

Roy Cooper's inauguration as NC Governor has been postponed due to snow.

They already took all the man's power, they aren't even gonna let him have the ceremony!

Yeah, I went grocery shopping yesterday. Not expecting to be able to leave the house until Monday.

Time for day drinking in the snow.

And yes, I did buy Cheerwine.

I'd love a poll thread about Southern grocery stores. It's pretty much unanimous that Food Lion would be at the bottom by a large margin.

My brother is flying to Raleigh on Sunday to go back to school. I wonder how bad that'll go.

Go Pack.

I'm in the shaft of that blue 4-6" penis.

I'm over in Villa Rica and I work in Bremen. I just hope it doesn't get bad before 5.

Bread, eggs and milk were mostly gone when I stopped at the grocery store to buy beer tonight. There were lines for gas too.

Why would you go fill your car up with gas when you know you won't be going anywhere for 2 days?

One of these days we will go full mad max

Hard to drive a caravan of half-naked post-apocalyptic cultists through desert-esque snowfields if you can't drive in the snow to begin with.
