Do cities in the south pre-salt the roads and have snowplows pave out the snow in early morning or are people left to their own devices?
Nope, no winter gear like that at all. Stay home or die, that is the rule of Southern Snow

Also a southeast tradition is the expectation that the forecast is never right. They can call for a dusting and we'll get a foot, or they can call for a foot and there won't be a cloud in the sky.
Ah. Ok, if cities don't provide public services like snowplow trucks in the morning or pay workers to clear out major public sidewalks, I can see how this might be a problem.
Can confirm.Nope, no winter gear like that at all. Stay home or die, that is the rule of Southern Snow
I've never seen the city do any of that lol. Maybe they don't have accesss to a snow plow at all because why have one in every city in North Carolina. I might just never see it thoDo cities in the south pre-salt the roads and have snowplows pave out the snow in early morning or are people left to their own devices?
Fuuuuuuck this weekend. The metro ATL area is gonna be a pain in the ass. Better find a warmer jacket...
Ayyyy I live in Greenville too.Greenville is a town that can take twenty minutes to cross because a train parked on Arlington. Yeah, snow plows are a wet dream.
The biggest shock for me since moving to the south about snow storms is that bread, milk and eggs always sell out. Bottled water as well usually.
Now, in the 10+ years I've lived in Atlanta, I can count on maybe 1 hand where there was enough of a storm to keep me away from making it to my neighborhood grocery store for more than 24 hours. There hasn't been one that kept me inside for more than 48.
The shelves will be bare by tomorrow morning.
My only guess at this phenomenon is that southerners love to eat French toast on snow days.

I'm in VB. They're calling for us to get 7-11" of snow! Bring it on!
Glad it's happening on a Saturday for us though.
My brother is flying to Raleigh on Sunday to go back to school. I wonder how bad that'll go.
Airline pilot here...
Saturday operations at RDU should be almost all cancelled I am assuming. Sunday expect a lot of the early morning flights to be delayed and/or cancelled. If planes don't come in Saturday night there will be no planes available for early sunday morning flights. Not sure what time your friends flight is but most airlines waive change fees for weather events such as this.
East TN here. There is talk of 2 or MAYBE 3 inches of snow and if you live in the south you know what that means........every store is being sacked right now and everything will shut down.
When I read "Major snowstorm" I scoffed. But then saw the totals with numbers tipping 12+ inches, and yeah, that's snow cred. Although Atlanta is looking at like 1" ... so... c'mon now.
Stay indoors if you can, grab some beers.
Eh, I live in one of the snowiest cities in the US... 12+ inches is major no matter what.
Greenville NC?Grew up in NC but spent time in Kansas the reason towns shut down is because the people aren't used to it. They didn't grow up in it they don't know how to drive in it or salt sidewalks or put chains on tires etc. it's a huge difference lol. I've seen ppl pour water on iced windows and cause them to break. Now that I'm back in Greenville I look forward to the town being shutdown.
Sigh
I don't want to deal with the hassle of Georgia panic over some snowflakes
I'm right there with you brother.
I'm in the shaft of that blue 4-6" penis.
Having lived in Charlotte for 7 years, I can confirm that even the threat of this storm will shut down the city.
Also, in before any "bread and milk" jokes are made.
That's not even the good pic either.
Grocery stores are already packed with people, couldn't even get into the Harris Teeter, parking lot was packed with cars trying to find a parking spot. Had to settle for the damn Food Lion.
My brother is flying to Raleigh on Sunday to go back to school. I wonder how bad that'll go.
Yeah. Its usually CT,Mass,NJ,NY, PA that get hit at this time.Having lived in CT my entire life, it puts a smile on my face seeing literally all points north and south of the state getting feet of snow, and we get zero.
2 years and counting!

One of these days we will go full mad max
Nah Piggly Wiggly is worse. Though Food Lion is pretty bad.I'd love a poll thread about Southern grocery stores. It's pretty much unanimous that Food Lion would be at the bottom by a large margin.
