Do I like Jim Carrey? Check.

Do I like it when he plays a dramatic role? Double check.

Do I like films that are "different"? Check.

The question is, will I like this movie, and is it worth a blind buy?

You will love it. Worth a blind buy, easily.

ARGH. As much as I hate Focus Features, I'm probably going to have to pick this up. I'm just too intrigued over the prospect of a Charlie Kaufman commentary. It just doesn't seem like something he would do.

Why do you hate Focus Features?

Oh, and I really hate DVD art that features quotes from critics or generic crap like "over 50 **** reviews! OMG!" It's just ugly.

What is the story in Star Trek Generations? I remember watching it and it seemed like in meandered for an hour and a half and then the final 10 minutes the story actually began.

Eternal Sunshine was a good movie but it isn't something I think I want to see again.

So true. Does that kind of stuff sell the dvd to people who wouldnt normally buy it? I just dont understand it. And focus features does it a lot, too.

I hate the quoe about Eternal Sunshine being a smart sexy comedy or whatever. What the fuck? That guy must have watched a different movie, cause Eternal.... was not a comedy.

omg Jim Carrey! Comedy!

Most people haven't even heard of the movie so anything to get them into it is probably a good thing. Anything with Jim Carrey that doesn't look super kooky bombs hard and this was certainly one of those movies.

It'll do better on DVD than the theaters that is for certain.

The comedy that is there is very dry and if a person is tuned into it the movie can be very funny. I wouldn't term the movie sexy at all though.

Hopefully Gondry will be as funny on the commentary as he is in person. I saw him last year at a Virgin Megastore when he, Spike Jonze, and Chris Cunningham were promoting their Director's Label DVDs. Definately an interesting person to listen to.

Speaking of DVD cover art, this reminds of an interview Gondry did with the Onion A.V. Club where he talks about his hatred for the man who did the awful dvd cover/poster for Human Nature.

Onion A.V. Club Gondry/Kaufman Interview

MG: We're happy with the poster now, though it took some time to work out the right design concept. A lot of times, people say, "But nobody will judge a film based on the poster." I get so offended when I hear that. I'm like, "If you don't care about what goes on the poster, then let us do it, because we do." To me, the poster for Human Nature is hideous. The guy who decided to do this image, especially for the DVD, I made him promise to apologize to me after the video came out and didn't rent well. Because he promised me it would be a success.

CK: [Sarcastically.] And it turned out to be the number-one video in the country.

MG: That's true. [Laughs.] This guy, I insulted him on the phone. We had worked on this film for four years. I wanted to go and paint his house.

CK: You wanted to paint his house?

MG: Yeah, like paint big X's on his house. He put a fake naked Patricia Arquette on the cover to attract guys who probably wouldn't like the film, because he thought it would rent more. We had been working for four years on this project we cherished, and he arrived for two weeks and destroyed everything. Now I can't even give this film to a friend, because I'm ashamed to hold this horrible cover. And I hate this guy. If I see him someplace now, I will kick his balls off. I really viscerally hate his guts. Talking to him on the phone was so hard, because he'd give you a little hope that you have some kind of control over how it turned out. Then, as soon as it turned out that you're not in agreement, it was like, "It was nice talking to you, but I'm going to do it my way anyway." So basically the only option you have is to agree with him. Forget it.

They did the same thing for Lost in Translation, then so many people went to see it/rented it and hated it because they didnt know what they were getting into.

A few reasons...

1. They make DVDs that force you to watch previews before letting you get to the main menu. You're allowed to fast forward through them but simply skipping them is impossible.

2. They use those shitty cases with the two snaps on the spine that you have to undo every time you want to open them.

3. By and large, their cover art is awful. For examples, please refer to this one and the Lost in Translation one.

Really, I guess you can blame this all on Universal because they're the ones who own Focus Features. Personally, I don't think there's a company out there worse than Universal when it comes to DVD production.
