Malignant trailer: James Wan horror movie

Great, another HBO Max direct to home film. Hope it doesn't tank Wan's career because this looks cool.

I love James Wan horror movies but direct to stream is a 100% shit guaranteed, so I don't know what to expect.

It's not going direct to HBO Max because they aren't confident in the film, every Warner Bros. movie in 2021 is getting a same-day HBO Max premiere. Even their biggest blockbusters, like The Suicide Squad and Dune, will both be premiering on HBO Max.

James Wan's style of horror does zilch for me, compared to stuff like A24 is putting out, or some of the classics.

He seems to be very popular though and it's cool that he is keeping horror alive in the mainstream arena, I suppose.

This is my take on it too honestly. He makes fun, hokey, brainless, pulp horror flicks, and while they're anything but cerebral, they're definitely more accessible to mainstream moviegoers, and for that I appreciate him.

Looks not scary and extremely derivative.

I've must've been a kid the last time I was legitimately horrified by a horror film.

Eh, honestly I prefer James Wan's movies over the A24 movies. A lot of them come across pretentious to me and have a lot of too similar themes. James Wan's movies are at least fun to watch.

Personally, I just find the A24 movies to be much more frightening. They generally go for a slow, creeping dread vs Wan's work which is like a thrill ride with a lot of jump scares. One scares me and the other doesn't.

But I know many people place movies like "The Conjuring" on their list of "scariest films". so different strokes, of course.

Watched this a few days ago. Personally, Wan's style of horror has been very hit and miss (liked Saw and the first Conjuring, but not much else), but this one surprisingly hit the right notes for me. The killer's reveal in the third act was an absolutely gloriously choreographed gore-fest and I couldn't help but laugh out loud at the sheer ridiculousness of it all.

So yeah, not a glowing recommendation but it's good enough if you're already subbed to HBO Max or have other methods of watching it. :)

Saw it last night thought it sucked and kind of unbelievable even for a horror movie. And the ending make no sense especially with the sister character. I liked that one chase scene and thought the action was good.

Is this coming to convenient home streaming, or is it being all old fashioned and weird and only going into cinemas?

Saw it yesterday. I'm a huge horror fan, I feel like I've seen it all or are at least aware of the various styles of the horror genre.

I didn't even know about this movie until the day it released and was really excited to read that people were comparing it to Argento and Fulci.

I thought it was pretty cool, I hyped myself a bit too much because of people comparing it to Italian horror, it definitely has that vibe at times. Especially with the killers outfit and the black leather gloves, those are totally a staple of the Giallo genre.

My wife, who has more mainstream tastes in Horror than I do, really enjoyed it. She thought it was scary and "super fucked up." I was entertained, definitely worth seeing if you like Horror. The coolest thing about it is that James' name is attached and Warner Bros. is behind it, it's cool to see such an absurd horror movie be attached to heavy hitters. Mainstream horror fans being exposed to something they've never experienced is super positive for the Horror film industry.

For people who plan on seeing it, just go with the flow. Lots of comments are saying the acting is bad. It's not, the movie is going for a certain style/vibe and the stilted acting at times is on purpose. Same with the music, it feels off at times but just go with it. You're gonna see some shit you've probably never seen in a Hollywood horror movie. Just have fun and roll with it, the movie is a good time.

For sure, A24 goes for a more disturbing tone that unsettles you, Wan is much more thrill ride, haunted house style.

I appreciate the A24 horror movies but I'm not a big fan of stuff like that. Admittedly, I'm much more of a fan of monster movies like Nightmare on Elm Street, Fright Night, The Thing, Lights Out, etc.

I try to watch it all though minus torture movies, just can't stomach that stuff.

I'm a huge horror fan, its my fave genre. I actually used to be a mod for huge horror group on fb but quit cause the admin was a douche, anyway that's neither here nor there. This looks like trash but I'll probably watch it anyway. Last good horror film I watched was Caveat on Shudder.

How are the "pretentious"? Funny when I used to mod a horror group on fb I'd read that complaint every day from people stuck on trash 80's slashers and garbage like James Wan's trash.

Ignore him. A24 has some of the best films of the past decade whereas James Wan has more or less consistently churned out crap.

edit: upon further reflection, I think The Conjuring may be the only film he’s released that wasn’t garbage. I hope I’m missing something, because that’s a horrible track record if I’m not.

Attempted to watch this twice and both times I had to leave the theatre and go home. £7 wasted but I'm doubtful it was that entertaining to begin with.

When I was a mod for a horror group the amount of hate "Hereditary" would get was mind boggling. Self proclaimed Horror fans are truly the worst.

It was actually really good, some parts I didn’t like, but overall a great movie! But the best part was the music and a few parts gave me chills because of how perfectly timed or amazing it was! :messenger_clapping:

Totally bobbins, but in a good way.
Not sure if the director meant it to be shit but was taking the piss like The Happening but enjoyed it non the less.

This movie was funny and entertaining. A throwback to campy 80s horror movies.

Some people took it too seriously, it seems lol. What the fuck were people expecting after the hilariously awful "You've been a very bad boy" dialog within the first dew minutes?
I laughed like hell when the camera zoomed in on her face and she said, “It’s time…..WE CUT OUT THE CANCER.”

Had a blast watching this film. It’s silly and hilarious at times, which was clearly by design. James Wan had fuck you money after Aquaman and went wild.

I did not care for this movie. It had a very good soundtrack, but that's it.
Wan's best film is Dead Silence. Fight me.

What a weird fucking movie.

Wan clearly wants to pay homage to good old fashioned horror from decades past (especially giallo) but can’t seem to do it without a gloss of modern day cg silliness that ruins the tone a bit. He has the skill, but not the invention.

Also, the lead actress gives a terrible performance, which is weird, coz she’s good in her British stuff.

Tonally all over the fucking shop.

The twist is hilarious. Pretty sure it’s not meant to be 😂 Absolutely bat shit.

There‘s a better, harder story in here somewhere, with some changes… but I admire Wan for just going with the stupid.

Movie is a fun dumb ride but the camp it's way too real.
The movie never feels like self aware of the clash in tones constantly and the actors seem to have done 1 take before calling it a day.
I think the script would have been better off for a director like Raimi or even Peter Jackson, the movie needed some real cheese master.

As it is, i think it'll become a cult classic in the so bad it's kinda good sense.

Edit: People like to give shit to Raimi for his cheese but Drag me to hell is a good contrast to this movie in how good he is at it, that's a real example of how to juggle drama, comedy and horror at the same time.
