Mame forgotten gems

So what classic game has you hooked?

Lately I have been playing Bagman. I remember seeing this game when I was younger and wrote it off as a miner249/Donkey Kong clone. But lately I’ve been having some great gaming moments with it. It seems like such a simple game but I'm finding its depth surprising. I even got my co-worker hooked after he hated it the first 5 times. I can understand that, because this game will kick your ass.

Also singing "No one knows what its like to be the Bagman, To be the sad man, Behind Blue eyes" only make the game that much more fun!

'Hoopla! Ai-yi-yi.'

I remember sinking a lot of quarters in this at one of the bigger arcades here back in the day. Fun game. :)

*points up* Great game, but I always remembered it as Xain'd Sleena - or something like that.
That's exactly what I was thinking. I spent a LOT of quarters on that game as a kid.

It was Solar Warrior at my arcade... I beat it, but it took tons of practice (there was an exchange student at the arcade who could beat me though!). I loved that there were different levels patterned after the planets, for some reason. I remember drawing new levels for it on graph paper. :lol

I always loved this game.

OMG! Thank you! I've been trying to remember the name of tha game forever! I think I played it in Martha's Vineyard back in the '80s.

:lol

I love these kind of threads. It's so slow at work that all I'm going to do is play MAME.

I'm bitter because the last thread I made just like this got locked ;P

Not sure which era of games you were thinking, but I always have to bust out a game
or two of elevator action returns.

The bagman games are really tough and whoop my ass :)

Big thumbs up for Bagman appreciation.

It was actually the focal point for some of us in this one arcade, with other games like Pole Position and Qbert getting play time primarily just to take a break inbetween slow-paced gold-grabbing sessions. But it was never long before giving Bagman another try.

Tapper. And even all these years later, the game still looks great!!! I'm also a big fan of Zoo Keeper, and yea, it's the REAL ONE!!!

It's not really a classic (at least by age definition), but every time I fire up mame, I end up playing the hell out of Guwange.

Super Sprint.

And that one Neogeo rally game...cant remember its name. Isometric view.... anyway, I always end up playing those two the most when I decide to play with mame.

i'd love to play it on my tv.

I also remember playing Tapper before it got switched to Root Beer.

Anyone remember Cyberball?

I don't even know what the normal gems of Mame are, let alone hidden ones. Give me some names people, I'll have to try them out.

I played Bagman on the C64 - it rocked.

Was from Ocean wasn't it....they changed the name (as they did with most of their arcade rip-offs....Gillian's Gold or something IIRC). Good version tho.

Even to this day, I'm still finding new gems on MameOx I've never heard of.

Ok, how do I get games to run on MAME? These are legal ROMs btw mods, they're available on the offical MAME site, they have permission for a few.

I'm following these instructions from the FAQ:

To launch the MAME in Windows, open up a command prompt. You can find it either from under Start Menu - Programs, or you can simply select Run and type command.com (Windows 95 / 98 / ME) or cmd.exe (Windows NT / 2000 / XP) into the dialog box. Go to your MAME directory (for example C:\MAME) by typing cd \mame and type a command with this syntax:

mame <gamename> <parameters>

The parameters are not required, so to just launch a game, type for example:

mame rastan

So I've done all that, but all it does is give me a load of crap like (for example):

"gridpix1" approximately matches the following supported games (best matches first):

gridlee Gridlee
gseeker Grid Seeker: Project Stormhammer (World)

And so on, a longer list of games than that.

But that's it, it doesn't run anything. What am I supposed to do now? The FAQ seems to think I should be playing by this point.

It's not that old (1996), but god damn I love Neo Turf Masters, just have to mention it.

Of some of the older games, I still have fun w/ Track 'n Field (and Numan Athletics, newer), Cyberball (which some mentioned), League Bowling, and Penguin-Kun Wars, but really I'll play almost anything decent a few times, and sometimes really get sucked into a game.

When I have friends over, Total Carnage and The Simpsons are great fun also..

I use a DS2 adapter on my laptop to play, it plugs right into the USB and has four controller ins, so it's absolutely perfect, at 15 bucks one of my best video-game related purchases ever considering what I've gotten out of it on MAME.

I've never actually played Xain'd Sleena at the arcade - when I bought it for the C64(Christmas '88) I had no idea it was originally an arcade game.

Of course, the name was completely different - Soldier of Light. The graphics were really great considering the machine's capabilities(dinosaur looked gorgeous), there were amazing planet based missions, and the last, but not the least - there was no need for additional loading, or 1541 - an outstanding programming achievement.

SIGH

I'm using mame32 now, but no matter what game I get, when i try and audit it it fails. This is the worst emulator I've ever used.

Ok, I was just really unlucky with bad roms. It's working now.

So ermm...where the hell are the control options?

I hope I haven't done that, the last game I tried wouldn't do anything when i pressed tab.

Old games kick my ass.

What do you do when you accidentally change the "open up options" button to none, so you can't open it to change it back to tab?

Most likely you have re-configured the normal menu key, Tab to something else. To restore the default settings, you'll have to delete default.cfg in the CFG subdirectory below the main MAME directory.

No, I changed it to none. I saw it change to none before it suddenly turned off. Bad design choice allowing something like that to happen. But thanks for the tip, I'll try that.

Some obscure but interesting ones to check out are

Hole Land - good mostly because... well... the name.
Sichuan II - If you like a little Shanghai variation with titties, it's for you.
Avenging Spirit - to see where Dave Perry got the idea for Messiah.
Hunchback - worst... game... evar (actually tied with H.B. Olympics)
Flicky - everyone I knew when it was new, made fun of it, but I thought it was great when I tried it years later.
Ghox - if you liked Arkanoid, this is a wet dream. Make sure you play the mouse version, not joystick.

I don't really play games on Mame, but how does Cal 50 work? Didn't that have a special joystick that rotated at the top?
