ROME (Reuters) - Italians love their mobile phones and often carry out love affairs over them -- but they must beware, flirting with text messages can carry a fine.

A judge in the northern Italian town of Padua on Monday found a man who sent an unsolicited compliment by SMS guilty of harassment and fined him 300 euros, Italian news agency Ansa reported.

"Since you appeared before my eyes I can't do anything but think of you," the man had written to a clerk while on lunch break, Ansa said. She took the offending sms to the police.

Italians own more mobile phones and send more text messages per person than any other European country, according to Eurostat and Censis surveys.

Geez, that's a pretty innocuous comment to get fined over, on the job or not. If this was his first offense, and assuming that there wasn't some subordinate/superior relationship involved, and she gave him her # willingly, then I'm gonna have to say that the ruling is pretty ridiculous. What, a guy can't give a compliment anymore?

Now, if this was his second or third time doing this, and she had previously told him to desist with his advances, that's different. But I mean, that comment isn't even lewd or anything, and it was his first offense...

The world is crazy. "Unsolicited compliments" get you fined. :lol It used to get you a courteous "why, thank you" (and perhaps an awkward glance if the lady thought you were creepy :p). My, how things change... :D

EDIT: I mean, it is a pretty tacky thing to do, and isn't likely to win a gal's heart, but tackiness shouldn't be a crime. :p

"I'm obsessed with you" is hardly a compliment.

That wasn't what he said, though; in fact, what he actually said is similar in form to the sentiments expressed in great poems and songs throughout the ages.

It's difficult for me to see how that fine (or ANY fine in this case) isn't excessive, barring mitigating details as mentioned in my previous post.
