Rooney completes United move

Tuesday August 31 2004

Manchester United have completed the signing of England striker Wayne Rooney from Everton.

The 18-year-old is now registered as a United player after he passed a medical with the club earlier on Tuesday and all the details were finally agreed.

The clubs reached "outline agreement" earlier in the day and the deal was completed with four and a half hours to go before the closure of the transfer window.

Rooney has signed a six-year contract with United, who will pay Everton a basic £20million, with half to be paid immediately and the other half due on August 1, 2005.

There are contingent payments totalling up to an extra £7million dependent on the fulfilment of various clauses over the next five years.

Rooney's representatives, Pro-Active Sports Management Ltd, could be paid £1.5million - depending on Rooney's loyalty to United - for their role in the acquisition of the player and the negotiation of his personal terms.

Rooney will be unveiled at a 1pm press conference on Wednesday. He said: "It was a tough decision to leave Everton, the club I've supported and played for all my life, but I'm excited to be joining a club as big as Manchester United.

"I feel this can only improve my career, playing with top players in top competitions like the Champions League and I can't wait to meet up with the team."

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson is thrilled to have Rooney on board after competition for his signature from Newcastle. He said: "I am very excited, I think we have got the best young player this country has seen in the past 30 years. Everyone is delighted by this signing."

very very good purchase for us. I hope he can help fix out bad league start. 20 million pounds is a lot for an 18 year old, but him and van nistelrooy will destroy every defense. Also, United now have both Ronaldo and Rooney, the two brightest players or the furture

Just to mention, Juventus got Swedish striker Zlaten Ibrahimovic for 20 million euros

Shrek and Donkey playing up front for Man U now :)

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Hardest I've laughed in a while. You, sir, are the man.

BTW, I guess this means I don't hate Man U as much now......Wait.....uh, yes I do.

shud have kept this in the soccer thread, anyway. It is a good buy although not one i think we wanted to do yet, still 6year contract + a career that shud last another 15years or so = worth it. Hell we payed £28 million for Veron, in retrospect this looks exetremely good value.

Rooney and ronaldo will both be 26 in 8 years...... woah

My penis is still intact.
You haven't really done it yet anyway. It's 10 million up front, another 10 next August, the rest depending not only on appearances for the club, but internationally as well.

Everton will probably get the fee eventually, but they got screwed in the short term.

I have a mild antipathy for United except when they're playing in Europe, but I'm actually fairly pleased by this move. Everton weren't able to showcase him properly, but now we'll all get to see a lot more of him. Plus United can probably develop him better. I can't really sympathise too much with the Everton supporters over this, by which I mean I just can't imagine how they feel. It must be gutting, but they must have known it was coming? It must have been great to have had him, but you have to free that type of talent, not lock it away.

Rooney & Nilsters are my strike squad in my fantasy team on PES2 :D
