The SOMA Review comes just in time for the game's 10th anniversary, and a SOMA ARG that launched inside of Simon's in-game PC leading to Frictional Game's next project - Hotel Samsara. This wasn't planned for half a year or anything, I was just being slammed by horrors a few months.

00:00 - Intro
00:28 - The Frictional Follow-up and The Pig in the Room
14:04 - Game Opening
18:52 - Visuals
25:21 - Music & Audio Design
30:23 - Gameplay Mechanics
39:47 - Story (SPOILERS)
01:13:18 - Conclusions
01:14:31 - Credits
01:15:37 - Ascension

Is this game scary? I really want to branch out to a different genre, because cRPGs take fuckton of time and the gameplay is kinda the same + the stories nowadays are nothing to write home about (last great RPG I played was probably Witcher 3). So I was looking at some innovative indies, but also adventure games and since I am an absolute wuss to play Alien:Isolation by brother got me 10 years go this is another game I am considering, since I heard the story is really good.

Regular mode or Safe Mode?

It's more of a psychological horror, instead of a jump scare horror.

I don't usually play horror games and I was able to finish it.

Playing this on safe mode would lessen the impact of the story imo.

The gameplay is running away from monsters, like amnesia the dark descent.

I can't tell you how scary it is because I'm pretty much immune to "horror" element in horror games (only game that did anything to me was Amnesia). SOMA has overall depressing atmosphere, I would say it's more connected to something like Sphere (movie) when it comes to horror elements (possible location spoilers underwater facility).

Story is in top 3 game stories.

Its a lame nihilistic existential horror walking simulator with minimal combat. It does feature some cool level enemy and design, if you're into that.

It's not as scary as Alien, and you need to play it in normal mode to appreciate it fully. It's easy, regardless. This was never meant to be difficult, but an immersive narrative experience.

It's not scary in a traditional way. This is, let's say, narrative horror / existential horror. It'll confront your concept of self. So it'll terrify you if you have a functional brain and is able to immerse yourself in the matter.

When I played it, I modded away "the main threat" in the game because I find blurry‑telegraphed one‑shot stealth horror mechanics an annoying concept in general, doesn't matter which game it is. How you'd like to play it, I have no idea, it depends.

Since you bumped it.

That's pretty damn cool. I'll bookmark this until it's finished.
