depends on what how much you want to spend and if your goal in "lighter" clothing is more in materials or a combination of material and color.

i've only recently began toying with the notion of adding actual spring/summer colors to my wardrobe. I too live in so cal and you can pretty much wear whatever the fuck you want here without much notice. just take a peak online at the front pages for some retailers. they'll usually show some nice combos of styles for the season. this should give you some idea about colors and different styles.

IMO black shoes aren't that great.

I have a very nice pair. They go with my suits and that's about it. In a pinch they look OK with a business casual setup, but they're no good with jeans. Brown is the way to go with nice shoes. More versatile.

Every man needs a nice pair of black shoes in a reserved style, but maybe that should be the 2nd or 3rd nice pair.

You'll need to go black and you'll need lace ups.

Cole Haan Air Adams Oxford. You can dress it up or down and it's comfy. You can get apron, or split toes on these. They look much better in person than any pics I can find on the net.

If you're going to be moving around and on your feet a lot, ECCO is a great choice. They look dressy but wear like trainers. You probably won't want to wear these with a suit though. The Cole Haans will work with anything.

As I read bits and pieces about watches, I'm learning about the value placed on mechanical watches as opposed to quartz -- a few comments I've read are adamant about never purchasing a quartz watch above $50. Despite quartz being more accurate in keeping time, these fellows value the larger complexity of a mechanical watch over time accuracy. Interesting stuff, I'm beginning to understand why good watches cost a lot.

My main issue with expensive watches is that I'm anal about defects and scratches so I'd never be completely comfortable with wearing a watch worth over $1000 (unless of course I turn into a millionaire and that amount money becomes poo change).

There are actually plenty of nice watches in the $300-$800 range if you look at the right brands. For example, Seiko.

I got a similar one from Urban Planet two years ago. Of course, since I'm a dumbass, it turned out it was a size to small and I didn't try it on the store (eyeballing things is a terrible idea when it comes to clothes). It doesn't have those epaulets though.

automatic watches are very nice. I simply love and cherish my Omega Seamaster. I actually quite like the look of the watch you posted, for the same reasons. I like wearing watches though and wouldn't mind spending a lot on a very nice quality piece.

With that said, you can find nice watches, even automatics, for cheaper than the $900 of that watch. It will definitely boil down to aesthetics, cost and overall quality. i do think if you want to step up your game as you seem to have interest in a watch, a nice piece will catch the eye of people always. In the 12 years I've owned my Seamaster I've gotten countless compliments on it from strangers. Watches such as fossils and other cheaper brands, while shallow to say, simply can never hold a candle to a more finely crafted piece and will barely add to your overall ensemble.

Chances are the fit is gonna suck with that one. I think Nike did a take on the M65 a while ago which might be worth looking into. And there's always the ones from Alpha Industries, which should at least be of decent quality.
