Manual or Automatic? Which are better drivers?

I'd think that's debateable; just look at how many accidents occure among manual/sport's car drivers? Manual drivers seem far more likely to speed and be a danger to everyone else.

Statistically though, I'd say you're probably right. =/

It doesn't really matter. If you are crappy driver, it doesn't matter what the hell your drive. Example: Some asshole driving a Ford F-250(huge fucking ass truck) backed into my poor, unsuspecting sports sedan today. I never even saw that shit coming. Afterwards, he had the nerve to blame it on me. The camera in the parking structure caught everything and he was still blaming it on me! :lol
Anyway, there are always going to be morons on the road. Hell, one day I saw some stupid woman drivng a huge SUV, don't remember the make, and she was staring into her compact while doing fifty+ She is eventually going to kill somebody.

I would tend to say that manual drivers are better, but I drive an automatic and have never had a moving violation or accident where I was at fault in over 10 years of driving, and I drive an automatic currently. However, I did learn on a manual.

It evens out.

Auto drivers are usually less skilled, but the car helps them out.

Manual drivers are better, but having to do all that screwing around negates their skill advantage.

Seems like all these threads are the same:

GAF#1: MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS ARE THE BEST YOU CAN'T DOWNSHIFT IN A AUTOMATIC LOL AMIRITE??

EURO-GAF: WTF IS AN AUTOMATIC?

GAF#2: I HATE SOCCER MOMS IN THEIR HUGE SUV GAS GUZZLERS WHO CAN'T DRIVE FOR CRAP MIATA + 1000

I would say the better drivers are the ones who can control their speeds just below the maximums and can follow the rules (at stop signs, signals; generally simple things that most drivers ignore). Driving is not just about stepping on the pedal afterall...anyone can do that.

Don't worry, my next car is going to be a full out manual. Sadly, I won't be able to sell it in California, but I don't care! I want my double-clutch shifting and I want it as soon as possible!

Dammit...the only reason I came to post here. I wish I didn't live in NYC, though sometimes. Otherwise I'd so get a stick.

I'm sorry... but I feel so cheap when I drive tiptronic... I literally feel like I'm doing nothing with the car...

With manual... I feel like the car is an extension of myself. Can't talk on the phone though.

what about those of us who don't have a choice :(

i never learned how to drive manual... i was such a horrible student in driver's ed that my instructor pretty much begged me to let him skip it. he was a really crappy instructor though.

(i don't drive very often)

For some reason, it makes me think of the similar scene in the movie Valley Girl. ;)

Manual drivers likely better on average. You get your wanna be race car drivers who are assholes, but you also get those people who realize they're more in control of the vehicle and drive really well.

The only sticks I've driven much is a Corolla sr5 and an old Fiat X19. That thing was like a gokart, but the stick had a trick you had to do to put it in reverse which was a bitch. I drive Automatic mainly for medical reasons/precautions.

Considering the fact that is never gonna happen I'm reassured, but should I ever go to Minnesota, I will always be aware. See what you've done? ;)

You should see the movie, the DVD is like five bucks at Wal-Mart. ;)

I chose never to drive and I plan never too, I am always afraid I might make some accident. While it's problematic, that sure leaves a whole lot of money for other things. :lol

My Element is an automatic, because I wanted my mother to be able to drive it. I want to go back. Hopefully Dad will hand his RX-8 down to me eventually, that one's a six-speed and a fantastic one, but he's saying that since he's not putting as many miles on it as he put on the Subaru, he might just keep it forever.

If his engine goes out, though, I'll fork out to replace it and then I'll keep the car. Mwahaha.

Anyway, I drove a stick for 5 years, and now I drive an automatic. The difference is mainly that it's harder to eat or drink if you have to row a five-speed constantly, but I still did it, and not only on the freeway. That was pretty sketchy at times. Driving a stick does teach you to pay attention - if I see someone just sit there like a dunce when the light's green, it's almost always a vehicle that I know is automatic only.

Have you ever driven a manual transmission vehicle? IT always seems like people who haven't think that there is some big todo in driving a manual transmission vehicle, when the reality is that just like riding a bike once you do it, it becomes subconscious and to a manual transmission driver they don't think about the extra shifting and pedal pushing required... so it's not like it's a whole bunch more. It simply requires you to learn a little bit more about how to operate the vehicle.

Not true! Once you drive stick for a while you develop the left handed-reach over shift technique, not the safest method, but it works. The nice thing about manual is that it can make any(non-modded) car accelerate faster than auto, especially when the light turns green at an intersection. Ive noticed that alot of people who drive with auto-trannies will sit there for like 10 min before they start moving.

I have a tiptronic too. It is fun, but nothing really compares to driving a manual. When I got this car I was living in Philly and now in DC and I just hate driving a manual in heavy stop and go traffic. I thought tiptronic would be the best of both worlds (doesn't even close to a manual though).

To answer the topic question, I think both suck equally. No one in this country knows how to fucking drive a car.

Yep! I had to learn that so I could hold my girlfriend's hand with my right hand. Also, you don't have to go through the whole 1st thourgh 5th shift sequence. I always do 2nd then 4th and then 5th if i get on the freeway.

I see a problem here.

Let me highlight it:

Jesus.

DRIVING SAFETY, GET

I hope someone like you doesn't plow into me because the demand for physical contact with your girlfriend overrides your responsibility of safe driving.

They have nothing to do with skill. I see my fair share of incompentnet drivers using a manual. Guys rolling all over the place and stalling at lights.

Automatic is a lot more convenient and way better in traffic.
Manual way more fun if and when you have the road to play.

Bad drivers are the same in both.

These are words are true! Also people who are skilled at sticks can control every aspect of their speed while driving!

Also you can to talk on the phone while driving a stick did it in mine for years

I love stick. It's nice having that much control over your car. Not to mention its better gas mileage. I still have a hard time talking on the phone though. I'll hold the phone up to my ear w/ my left hand and I'll shift and steer with my right. I just have to use my head and shoulder to hold it when i have to turn. But if I'm really lazy I'll just use my speakerphone.

You can talk on the phone, eat, change clothes, etc while driving a stick. It just takes more practice.

And I drove a manual transmission in stop and go traffic for years... if you think it's to hard you need to rethink how much shifting you're actually doing(i.e. if I know I'm going to be only moving this far... do I really need to shift up to that additional gear because I'm getting near the redline... or instead should I just come off the gas a bit...).

i hate people who drive auto but pretend to drive standard.
the ones that keep their (right) hand on the shifter at all times
the ones that occasionally shift into neutral in auto!

but hey, i can accept it if they're used to standard and are driving an auto. i sometimes get the urge to kick in the clutch and pull a lever when i switch cars

I don't know how to drive a manual car, and won't bother to learn it. I don't know why I should, really. Why do manually something that my car can do automatically? For the pure fun of driving fast and being in control of the machine, riding it like it was a wild horse or something? I just want to get from point A to point B without getting any problem whatsoever. That's what it gives me. Anyways I don't own a car, and won't for a long while. Public transportation in Montreal is good enough for me not to spend an awful lot of money on a stack of metal.

The 3 worst drivers I know all drive manual. If you happen to be in the car while they're driving, you're in for a jerkaround which will inevitably cause you to have neck pains for days.

The above post proves you aren't nearly l33t enough to learn how to drive manual... plebeian.
