Marathon will be a premium, paid - but not 'full price' - Extraction Shooter with 3 maps at launch

When Destiny launched, the market was much more open to this kind of games, even if they sucked. People have become more demanding and some stuff doesnt fly in the current market. Studios need to up their game to get people's interest.

I have the impression that Bungie believes the year is still 2010.
What kind of game?

Marathon is completely different to Destiny.

This is the first AAA PvP game with long-term progression.

Why do people not understand how big this is?

This is not a game from 2010. This is what every game from 2035 is going to look like.

PvP has evolved over the last 10 years, it used to be normal for box price games to thrive, but it's dominated by F2P live service games with strong monetisation hooks and long term content support. The gamers that support these types of games don't jump between titles as often as you might think, they're invested to those ecosystems like Valorant or Apex Legends, where progression, cosmetics and there communities are all very much integrated. So when Bungie announces Marathon with a box price in an attempt to capture a broad audience in a niche competitive genre, it's a risky outdated strategy in today's climate.

Agreed, but this game looks a lot more finshed than Destiny ever did.

You dont even have a clue which game is catching fire by tomorrow. No one knows that. These long term predictions are just wishful thinking in yr head. ;)

All the people who say this...every single one of them...have been unable to predict a single Live Service hit in the last 10 years.

They've never forecasted a single hit, but will tell you Marathon is in trouble with faux confidence.

Escape from Tarkov is $40
Hunt Showdown is $40
Helldivers 2 is $40

Marathon can't be $40? People went from wanting to pay for fun to not wanting to pay for fun that quickly? Human DNA has changed that much in the last 15 months? I think not.

If you look at many Live Service flops over the last 10 years, you'll see the majority of them launch with huge, short lived spikes.

That's because the Fortnite, CSGO, PUBG, and League of Legends players would rather give a new game a chance than play their 836th hour of the game they main.

It's only after they recognize inferior quality do they return to their main title.

Oof. I'm suprsied they didn't just stick with Destiny since as far as I can tell it's been a money maker. It has a HARDCORE fanbase that buys everything they put out and it still attracts the casual audience every time a new expansion is released. If they took their time and made a Destiny 3 with a more open/social world I think it would have been huge. I don't think Marathon will be anything special but what do I know. Prove me wrong I guess...

Top game: AAA PvP game with paper thin progression.
Bottom game: First AAA PvP game with real progression.

You can only appreciate graphical advancements because recognizing psychological, game design oriented advancements is more difficult.
Bloody hell I really did bring you back from the brink.

Welcome back on board :)

Nice cope. Marathon looks like ass while a game in 2010 featured better visuals with destructible environments which mind you, is a pretty cool game design oriented advancement in itself.

Trying to predict whether a live-service game will succeed in today's volatile market is always tricky. I'm not saying it's impossible to succeed with a box price, it's just riskier now, especially given how the broader PvP landscape has evolved. A box price is a barrier, and 'fun' alone isn't enough anymore. The game also needs to be accessible, addictive, and supported long-term. If you're charging $40 upfront, expectations are way higher at launch, and there's less room for it to grow over time. Games like Escape from Tarkov and Helldivers 2 found success, but their rollouts were unique and not easily replicated. Marathon can succeed, but it's a high-stakes play in a market where most similar attempts have bombed.

Tarkov is 52 euro for the cheapest version

This is Sony another attempt to make a cash grab service disguise as a game. It will be very carefully crafted to make people folk out their money for different kinds of "rewards, achievements, reputations and upgrades". influencers and media outlets will be paid to give this "Game" a glowing previews.
Gaming is fucked.

3 maps for 70 bucks

snoop-dogg-dancing.gif
It's 100% not going to be 70$, probably 40. And 3 maps the size of the 2 Alpha maps is really solid. Most Extraction shooters launch with only 1-2 maps. Not to mention the 4th map will be available a couple weeks after launch. People that make the map complaints think it's comparable to tiny ass COD maps

I thought they were the same size as Call of Duty maps. Thanks for educating me.

Ooof this doesn't bode well for the futur of this GAAS. Player retention is abysmal even for a free alpha

I am not feeling this game. So i am going to pass which sucks because i love bungie.

but this is a downgrade from Destiny and its lore to ... this..

What is worse is you keep losing your shit if you die. lmao fk no -_-

Im starting to think that this is really a bad investment of Sony, instead of focusing on development single player exclusives and reviving OG Ps franchise titles. And they made it multiplatform instead of exclusive which so many Sony PS fans expected on PS to be haven of exclusive 1st and 2nd party games just like Nintendo. Western management really planted a bad seed which I hope a return to Japan leadership will fix it, especially this obsession on live service and GAas and so much focus on AAA games( some are even woke infested )and forgotten how great PS was with AA games especially from Japan studio in the past. That is why Astrobot is a great example of success of not being over budget.

Would be interesting to know how many people were invited.

Marathon was already multiplatform before Sony acquired Bungie and the deal included Marathon remaining multiplatform.

I still don't think Marathon will be DOA, just no way. Will sit only above Hunt Showdown PC numbers which is lame.
And come launch they will add some bells and whistles to their final version that graphically outside areas will look better.

Remember Elden Ring closed beta, the UI and graphics looked like ass but come launch it had all the fancy particles and shit.

I mean I don't necessarily think it will be DOA in the literal sense, there will be launch day players, streamers, and a day 1 spike, but that's a low bar for a project of this scale. I don't think it will retain players, I don't think it will sell well and I don't think it will last very long in the market based on everything we've seen.

You're not seriously comparing this to Elden Ring?

It's not the graphics, it's the complete lack of fresh, interesting and rewarding gameplay. All that focus on the aesthetics and fancy menus but the gameplay is shit. Bungie and Sony are in deep shit. Interest in the game died within literal hours when the alpha started and nobody really cares about it at this point.

They can polish the visuals all they want but unless they pull a complete rework of the gameplay loop out of their ass this game is done.

Even funnier when at least 70% of people find the aesthetic absolutely ugly\dull af :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

I think marathon looks ugly and seems empty based on the color palette and art design. This is doa. It's gonna be memed to hell and back.

This game mode is simply too niche for the general audience. This mode should have been a part of a larger game that did interest people, not the sole game.

Unlike Concord, most people just dont care about this game, for good or bad. Difficult to find a straw man to justify its failure, since this doesnt arouse any strong emotion on either side of the spectrum.

Just played Arc Raiders for 3 hours and it's so different from Marathon. Both games can without a doubt co-exist.

I'm more into Marathon at the moment.

I am not comparing this to Elden Ring. I am comparing it to alpha build for networking testing vs final build with all graphics.
I was very hyped for Marathon but I guess this will become just another game. It will have its moment 1 or 2 years down the line for sure.

They aren't delaying it guys. They need to release by September to beat the Xmas rush and COD. Delaying to 2026 likely clashes with fairgames assuming that's a 2026 game.

They will release the game hot and hope it has enough traction where they get a big gamer base who will stick with them as they add any missing content and features.

You can tell the game is unfinished. Not just due to the alpha issues people saw but they haven't even set the price yet. They're still in heavy WIP mode when these final 5 months should be all set and they are tidying up the code. But they aren't but need to ship it out.
