Marathon: Will Sony back Bungie or pull the plug?

Will Sony cancel Marathon before Bungie's revised WIP release date?

With the extremely negative coverage surrounding this game at this point, I'm doubting whether the game will ever even see the light of day. How many more millions will Sony have to pump into Marathon just to increase its meme value come release? Why would they even do this now, unless they have been somehow convinced by Bungie that the game's quality and its rep can be miraculously turned around, even a year down the road. That is how long Microsoft gave 343i with Halo Infinite after its own disastrous reveal.

They probably have given Bungie one last chance with the delay. If they're fucking it up again, I think not only is Marathon as a project done, they might also be done with Bungie.

They're gonna at least give it a shot. They won't Old Yeller it before releasing the game.

That said, I wonder what they can do to salvage the game at this point.

I cant even imagine how much pressure Herman's under after this inevitable delay.

I genuinely hope Bungie can pull some magic out the bag for this one. It would absolutely suck to lose another juggernaut of the industry and would legit crush me a bit.

They keeping it. Will come out in 2026 and flop. And Sony will sell off Bungie back half of next year. Pete Parsons wins again as he'll grift the next buy out or partnership deal for mega bucks.

I think it's unrecoverable. I reckon they pretend it's still coming and hope everyone eventually forgets about it, while moving ~everyone on to something else.

I wasn't nearly as down on Marathon as most here. I actually said repeatedly the art style looks phenomenal. Too bad that was the part they stole.

My prediction is that the game will still do fine. If it truly does bomb, and if Bungie truly does go down, it will have wildly surpassed anything I thought possible in terms of bombing.

I dont think anything short of a complete overhaul can save this game.. and this would mean a lot more money thrown at it.

So...or is going to be a loooong delay or they are going to simply let fade into oblivion in favor of another project (if they dont close the studio)

Sony need to start cracking the whip. Fire all the upper management and put the team to work on the game people want. It's time to stop treating these acquisitions with kid gloves. "Oh we still give them creative freedom to do what they want!" Fuck. That.

Destiny 3 - now!

I honestly don't think they should terminate Bungie. Most of the problems are from lack of maturity in keep an eye on projects, lack of honest feedback and heavy influence of toxic positivity. If they eliminate all of this and have a serious person to keep those people in check(or in the leash), then they could create their own thing. Delete Marathon and all those questionable GaaS, make a sweep and clean.
Also, Hermen is the one who should be terminated. This guy is probably the root of all the problems.

I hope they change the game. Make a single player mode, a traditional multiplayer mode and have the extraction mode as an extra.

Gameplay-wise Bungie makes awesome games.

I hope it is still salvageable.

Nah Sony will shit it out. I can see them delaying it, not for dev time but for the marketing team so they can try and figure out how to sell it to extremely hostile customers.

the game will be DOA, maximum it will last a year with news of "1,000 CCP" being the headline about the game the whole time then they will pull the plug

Sony is just postponing the inevitable. When Marathon is finally released, it will still bomb. The game is already damaged goods.

Helmet is probably gonna go forward because he has to prove that buying bungie was not a huge mistake.

Cancelling the game would be a declaration of defeat but there is always a 0.5% chance that the game is gonna have his small niche community.

Killing Marathon isn't the right move, but selling Bungie off is.

Get over the sunk-cost fallacy and just cut your losses.
And who's going to want to buy Bungie? Their Destiny 2 ongoing support feels like a constant hit or miss and their new project is a complete bust. That sounds like most of the talent is gone and their current status is boosted by their past successes.

Don't think MS would be interested in having them back and other big Western publishers like EA and Ubisoft have their own problems. Maybe some Chinese company would be interested... but definitely not for the same amount of money Sony paid for Bungie.

they are dipping too deep, they might just do like concord and called a day and sell bungie, if this worst case keep happening. the way they can win if they somehow with only time left, doing better than before, which i doubt. i don't know man, it's frustrating to know bungie going low like this. if only they are locked into what they good, they will make the acquisition sees the better way.

Fuck Bungie, they haven't produced anything worthwhile since the good ol' Halo days - Destiny 1 had some glimpses of "what it could have been" but we all know how that turned out to be...

They're ALMOST a scam company nowadays relying on the goodwill they created ages ago having only the whales/destiny 2 addicts to support them, no more talent left...

Indefinite delay, honestly after the stolen art, I thinks it's done. So much of the promotional material had that stuff in it. If it wasn't for that, it would have released as scheduled.

I believe that was the last straw.

Imagine the sheer resources required and workload of pulling out a fully fleshed out single player mode in what, a few months? Unlikely.

Speak for yourself.

I really enjoyed D1 &2 for the most part. The last expansion was a great ending.

With their update and no future projection it feels like it's somewhere in the middle at the moment. It COULD still be released, it COULD be cancelled. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I'm not sure how they'll steer the boat around, but there's a lot of work to do.

Hermen Hulst is the suckers name.

Not going to happen. They already lost a lot with Concord and its development budget

Same with Marathon but they'll see it through I believe

Way to much time and money into this to cancel it. Even if they only sell 500K across all platforms, that's still worth it.

The question is how long will Bungie support it.

I remember reading that Bungie is still controlled by old board / senior management.

They will have to go and Sony will take control if Marathon bombs.

Jason Jones is probably close to leaving given how wealthy he is and the fact Bungie are pretty much done as a high level developer. He's pretty much the only one of the old guys left anyway.

Contrary to popular opinion I think this will come good in the end. Needs a hell of a lot of work though clearly.

The easiest decision for Sony would be drop Marathon and focus on Destiny 3. Destiny is a big IP, a third entry would be a easy win for them, regardless the quality.

But they will insist in Marathon cause Bungie thinks they can make a good game. Honestly, Bungie still is Bungie, so who knows? At least they are getting feedback and trying to solve the problems with the game.
