Marathon's 'Endgame' Map "Cryo" only available on weekends

Defence force ready on page 1 I see.

This kind of thing is pretty shitty imo, reviewers couldn't review until this weekend only shit they pull, it's not even a big thing lol.

Also FUCK YOU to anyone who works weekends this game isn't for you.
Regards
Bungie
What about those that work during the week? Seems like this would be the perfect game.

Reminds me a bit of a mode in FIFA Ultimate Team

It's basically the most popular mode. FUT Champs (formerly Weekend League). You get a limited number of PvP matches, with better rewards depending on how many you win.

For me, it was the perfect mode to jump into some brain-dead competitive games over the weekend after work. I wasn't great at it, but it added a completely different vibe to the game. It's still hugely popular.

I like how whenever anything, whether that be criticisms, genuine shit takes or otherwise, is refuted (or met with the slightest pushback) people are automatically labelled shills or part of the defense force.

Very reasonable.

"Here's a cool map but you can only play it when we allow it"

This is why i hate GAAS and will never get into one

Not all GaaS games are like this though. Helldivers II does a fantastic job of not timegating content and allowing players to play however and whenever they want without "fear of losing out". Arc Raiders respects the players time and efforts very well too. Even WoW does a good job of this, allowing players to engage with content over a very wide range of opportunities and not locking content to super specific time or ways of playing.

I despise games which disrespect the player's time. It's a crappy mechanic and I don't play games which treat players like this.

I didn't buy Marathon because its a sweaty hardcore PvP game and I'm not very good at games like that, but man now I'm REALLY glad I didn't buy it, because this "dictate when you can play" crap would make me very mad if I liked the game. I play games on MY time schedule, NOT when the devs dictate I can play. Frack that crap.

But hey, I hope the Marathon fans will get to enjoy this stuff. With how small the community already is I'd hate to see stupid decisions like this make the community even smaller.

So let's say you load in this weekend, with your two mates and then you need shroud or get 3rd partied within like 9o seconds, you then can't run Marathon again until you drop back to extraction and get a worthy load out? Is that right?

Lol, Bungie always - always - finds a way to shoot their own feet.

Artificial time gating to slow down progression to draw out playtime. I'm sure someone floated the idea of adding an MTX token to buy runs during the week.
The is just the first shoe to drop.

The nature of gaas is the honeymoon period wears off.

Once it does we will see what Marathon is really made of.

You can run it whenever as long as you have the loadout for it.

It looks like it will cost a fortune for those willing to risk their vault. I wont be having a go for a couple of weeks at least.

Should be fairly quick to get back in by just farming players on hotspots in dire marsh or outpost

How does a weekly event "disrespect your time"?

I doubt I'll ever set foot in this, being casual dadgamer me. But I'll watch some footage of it. Could be pretty awesome.

I have played 12 hours so far and haven't even loaded in Outpost yet.

You're only giving Marathon 3 months to live? Damn, i guess even you lost hope huh
Game will settle around 20-30k PC players. This game wont shut down, but sony obviously gonna restructure the marathon team, because they wont let 400+ devs working on a game with a smaller playerbase.

Helldivers 2 still has stuff like major orders and daily tasks, same with these other games. All things designed to make players engage with the game on their terms.

Surely not as egregious as locking out an entire map, but nevertheless unpleasant and annoying.

It will be enough at the start. Nobody gonna go in with the best gear when they dont even know how to extract :D
Yeah i get you i might pop in to see whats what but don't expect to get very far.

Didn't they say in the Vidoc you'll need your very best gear? Im thinking something along the lines of crosses 60k loadouts might be enough, just.

Having both available at all times wouldn't work.
Which would be no problem at all, if they didn't choose to hide it while using this content to sell the game.

I understand these types of games tend to rely on their users being easy marks and often treat them that way -and many of those users have come to expect and accept this treatment- but there's no way everyone is fine with this being hidden until now.

This reminds me of DMZ (COD Extraction mode) that had a map called Building 21 that was only accessible on the weekends. You also had to loot access cards from the main map to enter. The hard part was they had missions tied to Building 21 that would stall your progression if you finished everything during the week and would have to wait for it to open. Hopefully this doesn't become a bottle neck for Marathon players.

DMZ 2 is rumored to come out this year since Infinity Ward is doing this years COD. I guess we will find out at COD Next over the summer.

Watching this Cryo map to see what the fuss is about. People are just getting kicked every few minute it seems. So shit isn't going well.

Only 40k players and I sure most aren't even able to get to Cryo so this can't be a server getting hammered issue.

They can't get any higher, the game is the best shooter in the last 20 years.

I'm glad you and other people like it, but no way do I think this. To me Arc Raiders is a much better shooter, I'd even put Helldivers II above my experience with Marathon.

They just need to include an in game calendar with different 3 day chunks for Cryo. Prioritize the weekend but occasionally drop a Wed - Friday block for others.

I actually thought they were going to limit access via Cryo cards you found in the other maps.

Either way, this is awesome.

Well, this definitely isn't a game i will spend time playing since I work Friday through Monday and off Tues through Thursday. Lol.

I get why they are doing it though since player numbers is a concern. Hopefully ranked is moved from just weekends eventually though.

Out of the reasons they gave, the only one which requires a fixed schedule to address is the concern over a lack of players being available at the same time. The others may require limiting access, but not to a specific time.

It is quite likely they did not originally intend this content to be restricted this way, and that it is has been forced by low player numbers.

Fair enough. Helldivers isn't a pvp game and Arcs pvp is sorely lacking for me. But whatever floats your boat sir.

I don't think so. They wouldn't have released 3 new hoppers this week if that was the case.

The map is fire. On par with vault of glass levels of genius construction.

Bravo Bungie.

Sure, but you said "best shooter", not "best PvP" game. I could see an argument for Marathon being considered one of the best PvP games in the past decade or so, but shooter is too broad a genre in my opinion. 😎

They really want to kill this game at this point.

Well, maybe not.

Marathon is a sweats game. Hardcore PvP people who play many hours per day. Just look at the Marathon OT, most of the people in there loving the game already have 50+ hours played on it. Its not a game for normal gamers, its for the hardcore. So, in that regards, hardcore gamers will schedule time on the weekends to do this. They'll order their life around it if needed.

I don't think Marathon is a game for most of us. So in that regard yeah, they'll kill any chance of the game having a broad appeal or a large audience, but the hardcore sweats will likely eat it up? Maybe.

Sure they can make a game for those people... Those people will leave them behind in a second once a new game in the genre comes out.
They're already leaving right now.

Yeah, probably. I'm' not saying its a smart design decision. 😂

I'm convinced this cadence is simply part of managing the deployment and performance of content. Right now it definitely plays into the setting of the game and the discovery of what happened to the colony and the marathon. I dont see why they could'nt relax it in the future.

Tho I do find it funny that no one complains about "prestige-ing" in arc raiders being time gated when its the longer term, if not the only endgame that exists there(5 months later). Personal progress is arguably more shackled in Arc's sandbox. Like, fuck, GTFO has a somewhat similar "you gotta prove you're worthy bucko" progression to get into deeper levels and that ultimately can leave the unskilled stranded if they dont try to address their strategy and approach, forget scheduled availability
