I welcome the Jonas brothers...well, at least two of them. The other one can stay home :-\

Prime-riah is the gold standard of voice, beauty, and class as far as I'm concerned.

Ratings? Yes. The integrity of the show? No.

Mimic, you DO realize that Mariah Carey set the standard of vocal ability in Pop music so high that she's the only Pop singer in the history of EVER to have her name become synonymous with an entire vocal register, right?

I'll give you Nicki Minaj, but Mimi Carey is the most vetted singer to grace the panel of a singing competition. Idol really lucked out getting her.

Doesn't matter one bit unless she is a good judge. Which is yet to be seen.

I do agree that of the options out there Carey was probably one of the best choices.

I wasn't talking about Mariah :) She's an excellent choice.

Looks like AI and the X-Factor have something in common. Both shows hired a legend and a basic 'my 15 minutes are almost over' sidekick.

Looks like Randy is probably out. I feel like all my dreams have come true.

I am convinced that his terrible influence had a lot to do with how inane J Lo turned out to be on the show (well she was never going to be good....but she shouldn't have been as bad as she was).

Mariah is going to sit in a chair, quack out some flaccid gibberish, promote her next godawful album a few times, and then scuddle out in 2 seasons if the show isn't canceled by then.

You and your pessimism will be ignored. Idol must survive.

(Even if it goes horribly it still has several seasons left)

Remind me never to wonder into a POP-gaf thread without a cray supercomputer. I need the horsepower to power all the gifs.

90s Mariah was classy and had an amazing voice. Lots of her songs were stupid and cheesy as shit but it's nice when someone can get as high as whistle register. She's been awful for a long time now though obviously. Still loling at the whole nick cannon thing.

Well, this depends.

Mariah's occasional diva-tudes are well documented. A few people in the business know singing quite like her. And she's got the gargantuan sales history to back up her talent.

She's got the credentials to give better constructive criticism than any judge to ever grace the Idol panel.

What it will come down to, and this is the case for ANYONE, is how willing she is to be the bad guy.

Frankly, I think the worse thing Idol ever did was nurture this idea that criticism is evil. Mariah could give the fairest, most constructive, most from-a-good-place criticism in the world; but it doesn't matter because if it's at all negetive people have been trained to hate it.

If Mariah's not afraid of to be a bitch (and receive the hate of the crowd because of it), she could easily be the best Judge Idol's ever had besides Simon.

If she's too conscious of the audience...then we're getting JLo/Ellen 2.0

1) Some of Mariah's best vocal performances have come from her later career.

2) Shouldn't LOL at her and Cannon. Yeah, it was funny at first but they've become one of Urban's favorite celeb couples. Anyone following her via blogs can see that she clearly loves her some Nick Cannon...Ok, so it is funny. But still!

Yeah no.

Vocal ability doesn't magically give one the ability to talk about other's singing intelligently.

Well, thank god Mariah has perfect pitch then.

She's considered one of the best vocalists in pop history and has a career spanning two decades. Do you really not think she'd be capable of discussing what it takes to be a good singer and pop star?

We will see.

Pop stars, no matter how skilled and talented, always amaze me with their ability to show off their lack of higher brain function.

Kara Dioguardi was actually an incredible singer...... she was as inane as any of them.

I think that it is probable that she has the ability, but I don't know whether she would actually demonstrate it. Mariah (and Whitney) for that matter did not appear out of Zeus' head fully-formed; they both had a lot of vocal training. Whitney did vocal training after school and Mariah had had sort of impromptu lessons with her mother, who sang opera. There is a reason that, Streisand aside, those two have more impeccable fundamental technique from top to bottom than just about everyone else and it is not just because they were lucky to have such great voices. They could have those amazing voices and still lack the technical ability to get the most out of it, but instead they have both, and having the skill is a product of hard work and practice.

So I suspect that she should be able to articulate these things. Whether she ends up being another producer puppet who sits in a chair and talks about being people "emotionally perfect" or whether she's unafraid to be critical remains to be seen. I thought she was good on her episode years ago in terms of actually making critiques and suggestions, but she was also too nice for judging for my tastes. But she was shady, too, so that's nice.

I lean pessimistic because I think that the show as an institution and how it is run is the problem, and unless the producers are willing to cede more control to the judges it will not matter who the judges are.

Yeh. I am mainly being obstinate because I don't want to get my hopes up. Deep down I am VERY optimistic now that they have removed Randy. Will be a very, very interesting season,

I see your shade.

people dissing Mariah, you get over yourselves.

It takes SO MUCH EFFORT to excel at any art or sports and Mariah does exactly that at singing, she knows way more than a thing or two about singing.

If I were a contestant, I'd shit my pants if I had to sing in front of her, I'd fear she would think all the time "you call that singing...?? " while I open my mouth and try to produce a tone.

I've read that Mariah wants Lenny Kravitz on the panel. I guess they're going back to the four judge format because I keep seeing Keith Urban, Minaj and Carey mentioned with an undecided fourth judge. SYTYCD judge Nigel Lythgoe's name has come up as a possibility. I don't know why they don't just put Jimmy Iovine on the panel and be done with it.

Just terrible.

So, Phil actually sold pretty respectably. His debut album "World from the Side of the Moon" came in at No. 4 with exactly 169,011 sold.

For those keeping score at home: he comes in at No. 14 all-time of Idol debuts, and of the winners, he comes in at No. 8.

There's no way any of the new judges will be good. They don't want their fans to think they're mean.

Simon is all that matters.
