This is like my first Mario Kart game in a decade so I'm not completely familiar with all the mechanics yet but I have to ask, are light characters worth bothering with at all? They just seem to have really crappy stats compared to heavy characters. The extra acceleration is nice but being the slowest AND the lightest just makes them seem useless to me.
