Mario Kart Arcade GP Pic

Some misc. info:

Mario Kart Arcade Grand Prix

- Release: Fall 2005 (arcade)
- Hardware: Triforce
- 1-4 players
- Playable at Makuhari Messe today and tomorrow (Feb. 18-19)
- Uses "NamCam 2" camera to take the player's pic and see it during races
- Features "Rubberband System" which adjusts the performance of the kart on the fly according to your skill during races, to keep things exciting and (I guess?) competitive
- Features "Rewritable Card" system to keep track of progress, items, etc. (sounds kinda like the F-Zero AX card, maybe a little more advanced)

I want the home conversion to be held off until Revolution. It'd be awesome with camera support for online play, and nobody is going to buy a BBA + camera for their Gamecube this late in the life cycle.

That's the camera, right?

awesome pics...I really like the idea of in-game avatars. Hopefully this is released for the home because I can count the number of arcades within a 30 mile radius on one hand.

I can't believe they just advertised rubberband AI as a feature.

Rubberband AI is awesome in a game like Mario Kart. It also means a person coming last is much more likely to pick up a Lightning Bolt or one of the other god weapons, for example.

LOL, that reminds me of my Double Dash multi sessions where I'd stay in last place usually just up and until the last lap of the race and blow by everyone with my friend.

the name of the arcade board, triforce....is named after the collaboration of nintendo/namco/sega? i remember seeing some photoshop back in the day of the three company logo's making love or something...

I can't believe you are wanting this game for the Revolution...Seriously maybe I am missing but it seems you all love to spend 300$ for nothing.
This game would be perfect and has to be for the GC. point.

For what it's worth, the zany new avatar/camera feature is actually pretty old. I played a Namco arcade racing game that had the exact same setup, the name of which I can't remember, in a Japanese arcade back in 1998. It was tons of fun, even with strangers!

Yep.

Also, if this turns up on any home console, it'll most definitely be GC. Triforce is to GC as Naomi was to Dreamcast. It's basically the same thing.

Looking good. And there's no way this is going to Revolution. If there's a home version in the works it's for the GC, no question about it.

wow - Race ON! lives ....

I wonder if any of the team was involved?

Looks fricken sweet. Protip Namco/Nin : LEAVE THE LAN CODE IN, don't remove/disable it a la Fzero.

Yep.

Glad to see there is still people who thinks logical on those boards.

Why doesn't HAL just can that stupid Kirby game and release another Smash? It would be the perfect way to end the Cube's run.

The NAMCAM rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was also in this crazy Namco racing game that came out a few years back. It was mondo awesome.

Why bother? A Super Smash Bros game takes a lot of resources to make. Nintendo would rather let them work on it for Revolution as a killer app.

that's Race ON!

and yes, it kicked ass, so i'm hoping that some of the team were involved in this.

Any reason why toad is wearing a suit? (first pic)
did you read the thread, or look at the other picture? the game takes your photo and throws crazy shit on it related to your character. thats a guy playing, with toads hat on is picture.

I recall playing a Namco motorcycle racer that featured the camera so many years ago in arcades. Suzuka 8 hours maybe? Something similar to it at least. Coca-Cola was a big sponsor of the unit because the logo was plastered all over the damned thing. I think there was also an F1 game as well that utilized it.

Also the camera technology back then didn't actually keep live feed going, I think it was set to take quick snaps every few seconds or whatnot, so you would generally see a photo above each racer and not moving video.

Edit: Race ON?

I'm thinking the setup leans towards the Revolution: built-in camera, face in the game, sense of "community"; ideas Nintendo always has experimented with.

The game is definitely Cube bound if anywhere though.

The press release, translated...

Nintendo’s most popular game is being made for the arcade by Namco!
Racing game “Mario Kart Arcade Grand Prix” will release this Fall.

Entertainment company Namco Co., Ltd. is proud to announce that it has acquired the rights to develop the world famous game “Mario Kart” for Nintendo Co., Ltd. (headquarters: Kyoto, president: Satoru Iwata).

“Mario Kart Arcade Grand Prix” is an item battle kart racing game in which various kinds of items are used to attack rival karts and compete for rank. Namco has been given the freedom to be creative* in the world of “Mario Kart” that Nintendo has made. Under Nintendo’s supervision, all kinds of needs are being met by this arcade game, from playing in a group to racing skillfully as a single player. It uses the Triforce system board, a next-gen 3-D graphics board using the architecture of the Nintendo GameCube, which was developed in a joint venture between Namco, Sega, and Nintendo.

Further, this game will be on exposition on February 18th and 19th in Namco’s booth at the AOU 2005 Amusement Expo, in Hall 2 of the Makuhari Messe.

* Examples of technologies used in “Mario Kart Arcade Grand Prix”
Namcam2: This equipment takes a player’s picture and puts it above the cart in the middle of a race.
Rubber band system: To keep players enjoying the game, this system keeps the mobility of the karts consistent.
Rewriteable card: This is a rewriteable magnetic card. The game’s progression, items, and so on can be recorded for continued play later.

Product summary
Title: Mario Kart Arcade Grand Prix (Official name: Mario Kart Arcade GP)
Release date: Fall 2005 (tentative)
Board: Triforce
Genre: Racing
Maximum number of connected units: 4 seats

Looks nice!

Still choked at Namco for Star Fox, but I see no reason why they can't do Mario Kart justice. Hopefully we get a home conversion a la F-Zero

Eh, what console could have this been for besides the GC? Unless you folks are thinking the revolution. o-o.
no, lots of people were saying DS earlier. that, and some revolution, but that makes less sense.

This is the sort of look I think many people wanted from the last Mario Kart. The realistic look for an unrealistic game. I rather liked the different karts and 2-character setup, but I'm not going to complain about another Mario Kart!

Made by Namco this time around?? Wow, finally another GOOD Mario Kart game after all these years. :D

I believe Namco will be doing Mario Kart for Revolution.

There always only one Mario Kart per console generation, and Mario Kart at Revolution launch would be huge.

I hope this gets to the States.

Had Naka just let Sonic be in a Kart, Sega would be making this game. With Sega as part of the Triforce, I wonder if Sonic might still make an appearance. I'd kill for a Sega-Namco-Nintendo Smash Bros. Arcade game.

The Namco-Nintendo list now stands at:

Ridge Racer 64
Soul Calibur 2
Pac-man Vs.
Donkey Konga 1-3
Star Fox Assault
Mario Kart Arcade GP
(What am I missing?)

So when are these two lovebirds going to tie the knot?

You're damn right it does.
In fact, since it's a collaboration and Pac-Man is in it, and if Namco decided to put other characters in, would it be out of the question to maybe expect one or two Namco-themed courses as well? Maybe a quirky Pac-Man one with blue walls and ghosts floating around and shit. I bring this up becuase I like imagining a Klonoa one in my mind. That is all.

i would much rather they hold off, tweak it. make it online and launch it with revolution.

i already got mario kart fo my GC and would prefer the chance of it being online. smack talk with buddies who live 1600 miles away would rock ass.
