Mass Effect 3 Demo Impressions [Online Open To All]

The can't holster weapon thing was weird but I think I can live through that. Still stupid, though.

And someone needs to do a gif of the first run animation of Anderson, bahaha.

Downloaded the PC version, and. What. The. Fuck.

Seriously, what have they done to this game?!

Like for real, its bad. It's Dragon Age 2 bad.

And yeah, I know it's only a demo.

-Why is the combat so FAST. Like, I can't get a grip of it. Im not sure whats happening.

- The animations looks awful. Like the running, come on. And the lip-synching.

+ The music is better, thank god. Love the piano.

- Graphics. Look worse than ME1. Seriously. It's not good.

- Dialouge.

First impressions are real bad. Canceling my pre-order.

Yeah this demo is just bad. Mass Effect 2 has far better lighting. I'm not sure what happened with this.

The combat is utter garbage. It's like they wanted to be Gears but are so inept at actually capturing the gameplay that you end up with ME2 combat that is pretty much sped up via a internal console command. And they added in a roll animation that isn't animated well.

What happened with the animations. They are the worst I have seen in any of the games. It looks like they weren't even properly captured, and lip syncing looks like a 2004 game.
The animation for Anderson is just unbelievably bad. What were they thinking with that.

I don't feel like the graphics are worse. but one thing stood out horribly to me: Didn't feel like mucking with creation and just wanted to get into it...default femshep is ugly as shit and looks like a cartoon character compared to everyone else in the game.

It plays like ME2 to me. I wasn't expecting much else with the ~two year development time. The gameplay will sevice as long as the story and exploration are good, so don't let me down Bioware.

Seriously, actualy in the combat section dosn't look that bad, but the start section...holy shit, every other female with the character creation tools looked better, it clearly had zero effort from Bioware.

It's a bit humorous seeing people try and call out ME3 as worse looking than ME2. I just came off the back of the latter. They're the same, shoddy shadow, lighting, low res textures and all.

wat

The god rays in this alone blow away anything I've seen in ME2.

The god rays are the only redeeming quality. Overall lighting IS better in ME2.

This argument boils down to literally nothing more than "I like this screenshot more than the limited imagery in the demo".

Not impressed by the demo.

Graphics are ok but I expected better.
Animations range from ok to really bad.
Facial animation is sometimes non existent?!
I know this is only a demo, but hell, TOO MUCH SHOOTING. At least let me listen to ONE dialogue where I can choose more than 1 answer.
No holster animation? What? I can't 360° my Shepard anymore?
Why the fuck did I play 2 Mass Effect games fighting against reapers n shit and still nobody believes me. If I was Shepard I wouldn't even bother anymore.
Combat feels too hectic. Too fast. If I charge as a vanguard, all those explosions blind me and I can't see the enemy right in front of me killing me.

It's nice to see the old crew is back. But combat feels stiff, not as fluid as the second one. Died a bunch of times trying to get cover.

Peeking out of the corner and firing is also tricky as sheperd would come out of cover and start taking fire.

Played up until the first time you control Sheppard and switched it off. Thats enough.

I am buying it anyway!

Still pissed off that (what I thought was) a major release has that bloody 3 day "release day" gap between US and Europe.

Which means forums have to be avoided for 3 days.

current impressions:

I've had one long conversation where i could change two of Shepard's sentences slightly while fully realized and out-of-my-control character John Shepard, tough soldier, acts out

i ran out of 'ammo" and beat some husks with a pistol

i ran into a room where anderson said we need to find a way out. my wrpg senses pointed me at an open vent shaft but instead i had to open a door where a spring-loaded husk popped out and started flailing at me. i wasn't exactly lined up with it so i kept meleeing at it and it was this hilarious laugh out loud farce where the scripted monster kept going "GRRR" and sticking its arm out ineffectually while i kept swinging like a maniac trying to pistol whip it

then The Cheesiest Cutscene happened with a little boy

edit: oh and why can't i put away my gun. i can either slowly stroll with my gun drawn or dash around. no inbetween.

Lightning looks the same to me with added god rays....

Actually, it shocked that is exactly the same and not better, I mean I was hoping the game would look better than ME2.

Bioware are still the masters of superfluous conversation choices

Like that kid in the vent. Both choices lead to the exact same thing, there's literally 1 line of variation.

Can't launch the game under UT3.exe to force AA thanks to origin -.-

This argument boils down to literally nothing more than "I like this screenshot more than the limited imagery in the demo".

Well, I like any of my old 100+ screenshots more then anything from the demo which contains several locations.

What happened? I blinked, and all of a sudden all I can see was unadulterated, exaggerated, and even (sometimes) unfounded criticism!

...
Oh.

Hello, PC-GAF. How are you today?

I don't understand how a game that originated on 360 does not have any controller support out of the box on PC. Is Microsoft paying them to *NOT* support controller?

Console impressions: Yay, this is great - I'm having fun blah blah.

PC fan base comes in: FUCKING HELL THIS SUCKS I WANT MY MONEY BACK. GOOOOODDDDDDDDD. MASS EFFECT 1 HAS BETTER GRAPHICS. THE BURNING RAGE INSIDE ME MUST BE UNLEASHED ON BIOWARE.

I'm surprised to see so many negative reactions to the combat, it's ME2 combat but faster and more flexible, did you liked you slow ass tank Shepard that takes half second to jump over an edge?

The god rays in this alone blow away anything I've seen in ME2.

You realize that that's a default thing in every recent Unreal Engine 3 title. If you download the latest UDK build it's the exact same thing. Bioware didn't even work on that, that's Epic's work.

Bioware's lighting work is simply lazy.

"This is Major Alenko. Taking heavy fire. Awgawd."

Seriously, does the demo turn off half of the dialogue choices? I'm on Role-Playing and I've had the opportunity to choose Shepard's dialogue like four times, and it was practically a single sentence each time. The rest of the time he just says whatever he feels like, which is really jarring.

ME3 looks stunning, especially in the intro with the Reapers in the background.

How is the combat worse? The game felt harder and more poignant than in ME2 to me and I played the demo on normal.

I can only assume it's people struggling to adjust to the extra mobility and more aggressive AI. ME2 was an easily exploitable game of whack-a-mole in the most basic form. At it's worst, ME3 is exactly like it, only a little faster. At it's best, you have extra mobility and new attacks. People are very quick to write it off as worse when they're still trying to adjust.

Well, colour me pretty underwhelmed by the intro. Significantly worse than ME2, which I thought was excellent. BioWare somehow made a Reaper invasion rushed, uneventful and frankly a little bit boring. No sense of chaos or population density, and the actual lead in to the invasion was Arrival levels of half arsed. Some people seem to love it, but if this is how the game begins then it's a hugely missed opportunity to me.

This is a HUGE warning sign to me.

The crap graphics and stuff I can overlook, but if they butcher the story as bad as they did in 2, well... it won't be far behind MGS4 in terms of ruining a series.

I was going to avoid this demo but I have to play it now.

Just played it, it was pretty fun. Was nice seeing Wrex, Liara and Garrus in the same room together, shame Wrex isn't a squaddie though :/

I agree with the beginning being rushed as fuck though.

Not liking a lot of what I'm reading here.

It's a small portion's opinion. Personally, I thought combat was fast-paced and excellent and the powers felt more beefy and realized than ME2. Vanguard class is better than ever.

Dialogue's good, graphics are standard, and story by the looks of things will keep you on your toes.

It's gonna be one hell of a ride IMO.

I liked the demo and feel it an improvement over ME2. Combat was cool, Vanguards are still the coolest thing ever and punching people in the face never gets old. Im not expecting Alpha Protocol levels of quality in dialogue and i can only laugh at you people who are surprised its the same as in ME1 and 2. All in all cool game, will buy and play through a lot.

So far I'm agreeing with the "intro feels rushed" thing. It just sort of happens while a bunch of people, both named and unnamed, already know what's going on but keep acting surprised. Like it's an alien invasion movie where they attack in the first five minutes and all the characters know what it is.

Screens from the second mission.

Typical case of the low-texties-armoritis.
I really like the ragdolls and the look of cerberus this time around.

Yep, I definitely felt the need to adjust too, which is a good thing in my opinion.

Enemies don't seem to only come from the frontline now, they come from the side and behind, pretty neat.

True, it does kinda feel like a part has been skipped. Have to wait until the release to see if this really is the intro or not.
