Mass Effect 3 Demo Impressions [Online Open To All]

Whoa, what the hell is going on with Anderson's run animation right at the beginning? This is gif-worthy :D

Need to play more, really good so far.

I have played only online portion of the demo but so far my impressions - IT'S AWESOME. I didn't expect it to be fun and challenging but IT IS. I want to play it more but I don't want to burn out before the release.

Preordered the special edition. fuck my new year resolution!!

Yep, definitely looking forward to the big finale. This game is straight fun, with an awesome story to boot. Nit pick all you want, but this game delivers, speaking from the demo standpoint.

No jagged edges for me. Shit was smooth as a babies arse and 60 FPS to boot. Niccccce (single 6950 2GB GPU). Loving the smaller UI and while the engine is dated it runs great and is acceptable enough to finish off the series. I didn't expect an engine overhaul or upgrade tbh.

edit: in response to those a couple pages back complaining about the jagged edges lol I was in reply limbo for a bit.

PC? How did You manage to activate online on PC?

And i have BF 3 and B2K.

Ps. Even 1.5x1.5 OGSSAA + AA ingame doesnt eliminate all jaggies ;\

Amazing game.

- I wonder if the rest of the game is going to be " run for X minutes, cover mechanics go, kill Y foes, save the baby/eat the baby scenario, rinse repeat"

- Bravo guys, mixing pre-rendered 2002 era low bit-rate/quality cutscenes at 30 fps with real time in engine 60 fps cutscenes in the same fucking cutscene! Experienced this several times during the tutorial section alone.

- Great voiceacting, really wanted to turn of the sound thanks to mr "it's monday so I can't be bothered to even remotely act my voice lines" admiral.

Apparently the game still can crash randomly if you try to reorganize your hotbar.

E: and the only option after relaunching is for a new game? Lovely.

Well I solved my config problem. I had to run it in XP compatibility mode. That's freaking odd, but at least it worked.

EDIT: So it apparently only runs when I troubleshoot it for compatibility. I don't if it's only an issue for me or multiple people, but there's no reason for that.

I think the graphics are great on Xbox 360, specially the Sur Kesh part.

No, they arent.

Damn we need new hardware. I laughed and cried when i saw sprites running around in the distance and this fucking water.
Also lack SSAO in UE game on PC, really Bioware? Its just a an option to enable in engine ...

Game is still easy on insanity, but definitely more chaotic then ME 2 and a little harder, at least in demo. Mech fight was quite challenging at first, because You were surrounded, but You had only to run as far as You can and kill mercenaries and then spray at mech constantly.

What is funny that i had 2x anizo set by default ... [gtx 560]

Ps. Where is weapon holster button? And who though that doing 3 things with one button [space] is good design decision?

Demo was fun, although the second mission was kind of poorly put together as a demo since they force you to carry a bunch of heavy weapons that screw up power use. Vanguard+18 second recharge on charge=pointless. Still a cool mechanic though, just poorly represented in the demo.

It's been a while since I played ME2 but has the camera always been pulled this far in?

It is kind of annoying being that close on top of Shepherd at all times, is there anyway to zoom out a bit?

I tried the 360 demo but found it rather underwhelming... the game just seemed to be as linear as it gets and the cover based combat was pretty boring too. I was kind of hyped after seeing the latest gameplay videos but not planning to buy this anymore...

Ps. Where is weapon holster button?

It's been cut from the game entirely, because of, according to BioWare, console RAM limitations, and having to store the separate animations in the RAM taking up too much space.

I'm loving this demo.

My only real issue is that, as an Adept player, I hate that I cannot drop weapons in the second half of the single player portion. Cooldowns made me more worthless than a non-Blasto hanar.

...but why would they take it out of the PC version, we have no RAM limitations

Are all of the cutscenes and dialogue sections widescreen/black bars for everyone else on PC or is there a way to make it completely fullscreen for both gameplay and cutscenes?

Impressions:
- Visually, it was a mixed bag, but overall not that different from ME2. I had some jaggies and blurry textures but hopefully the fully game will come with more options (vertical sync, higher resolution textures, etc.)
- Gameplay was more fluid than ME2, but the roll feels like it should be more responsive. I'm not big fan of the way the camera holds its location while Shepard rolls before catching up with him/her (as opposed to GeoW where you can still move the camera around mid roll).
- The sound is fantastic. Definitely improved across the board with more meaty sounding explosions, weapons, engines.
- Bioware needs to fire there animators and hire some from Naughty Dog. Cutscene animation looks great, but the gameplay is still incredible stiff apart from the canned animations like the omi blade attacks. The sprint looks to mechanical (in an unrealistic manner) and they still haven't fixed the long standing issue of NPCs running with weapons. They literally have no movement from the waist up and their legs still have the awkward running animation from the first game. The animation in the gameplay has been seriously overlooked throughout the series and Bioware should take it seriously moving forward.
- The music is great so far. My favorite track is the ominous one that starts right as Vega gets Shepard. Definitely a nice mix of more traditional emotional tracks with a stronger ME1 vibe.
- The skill trees look like a lot of fun. Bioware really seems to have nailed the right mix of level progression and diversity.

Overall:
Despite being incredibly disappointed by the leaked script and the direction of the game, I can't help but be excited and pick the game up day 1. The demo was a little rough around the edges, but was a lot of fun overall and got me pumped to finally finish off the story.

Because BioWare does not give a single fuck about the PC port.

EDIT: Also, put me in the group who feels this doesn't look any worse than ME2. Having just come off ME2 both games share the same low res textures and geometry limits. I'd say ME3 will probably look a bit better in the long run thanks to some additional effects (like the god rays) and the greater sense of scale. That doesn't mean it necessarily looked all that hot though. I like the art, so I enjoy the look of the game, but the amount of headroom BioWare has to make the game look better on PC is incredible.

Wait wait wait, so we are going to spend the entire game walking around with our guns pointed out in front of us? (I played the demo a few days ago and don't remember ever being able to put my weapon down)

Unless I am misinterpreting your conversation...which I hope I am...

The same reason they couldn't be arsed to have all cutscenes ( as much as humanly possible atleast, instead of 50/50 or w/e ) rendered at 60. The space is there, they just can't be arsed. Who cares about consistency? It costs money.

Played the demo for 10 minutes skipping all the dialog ....man, what a run of the mill shooter with marginal as hell animation =(

I really love how Bioware thinks by increasing the speed of seemingly everything = MOAR INTENSITY!

Curious to see how the PS3 version turns out though

Also, black crush is fucking nasty and contrary to what devs think, does not make an image pop more

The gameplay is pretty legit, multiplayer mode is actually enjoyable. That said, there's a lot to be concerned about.

-Animations; is Bioware even trying anymore?
-Lip-synching; it's definitely gotten worse since ME2, how is that possible?
-Dialogue; THIS ISNT ABOUT STRATEGY OF TACTICS THIS IS ABOUT SURVIVAL

Ps. Where is weapon holster button? And who though that doing 3 things with one button [space] is good design decision?

1) is the fault of consoles and I blame 2) on them as well.

Your gun will always be out in "combat areas" and you can't draw your gun at all in "hub areas".

Hubs like the Citadel or the Normandy will not be like this obviously.

Eh, turned off dynamic shadows and got this

ohg and she looks like a gorilla when she smiles

Yes that is pretty evident.

Having your weapon out all the time is ruining any decent screenshot potential. That and it looks dumb.

But... there will still be sections when Shepard will have his gun holstered right? Like when he'll be walking around the Citadel or some alien village? Right? :(

Not sure what to think of this demo. It's clearly Bioware's first attempt at making an over the top action game and it shows, but the cover mechanics are responsive. I still have no idea if the entire game will have that vibe or not.

Damn, stealing my default avatar. Fraking juniors.
I kid, it's cool.

Played through the demo this morning. Noticed the beefing if my Sentinel's beloved Tech Armour. It now causes longer power cool downs. Not sure if the armour will be as viable in ME3. But... it was well done nerd.

Lift grenades are an awesome addition to the Sentinel's bag if tricks.

Wow, normally i would though that someone is joking. And people still talk that we dont need next-gen ...

Currently at the second part of the demo. Here's a batch of screenshots.

I had more, but I couldn't mass convert-to-PNG+upload and I am lazy.

Not quite blown away by the 360 demo. Graphics are fine, as I didn't think that it would be any better than 2. I'll have to get used to the entire weight dynamic, as the soldier felt too slow on his feet in Sur'kesh section of the demo. Story wise, I didn't get enough from the intro and Sur'kesh sections to make up my mind.

I'm downloading the PC demo now, but the lack of 360 pad support in a 3rd person cover shooter/RPG is impossible to comprehend, especially in an obvious console port like this. Why, Bioware? There is no excuse for this, you bastards!

After the 360 Japanese ME2 downloadable content fiasco, and this, Bioware may finally be on my shit list.

But... there will still be sections when Shepard will have his gun holstered right? Like when he'll be walking around the Citadel or some alien village? Right? :(

Yep. In a non-combat zone, like a hub, the gun is permanently holstered. In a combat zone its permanently out.

As someone said above, this series is pretty shitty to demo. Playing stuff like this just reminds me I'm not all that hot on the series when you boil down the individual elements. It's the scope of adventure, the galactic exploration, and the wider branching stories/stages that keep me playing. Sampling two compartmentalised levels can only draw parallels to every other shooter on the market, and not in a very good way.

Such is demoes.

What exactly did Bioware added in the engine to prevent holstering weapons in combat zones? I mean, if we could do it in ME2, what's stopping us to do it in ME3?

Some impressions:

  • I love the skyboxes.
  • I fucking hate the animations.
  • The combat feels okay BUT WAY TOO FUCKING FAST. SERIOUSLY WHY.
  • Singularity is back!

Femshep's body is so weird.

Dont care about 60fps there, but they should be in proper quality no-ass dvdrip quality. What is a shame that Mass Effect 2 higher bitrate cutscenes on PS3 than on PC. I'm not joking. I've downloaded PS3 iso once and literally pasted cutscenes from there to my PC folder, they were like two times bigger.

New roll and melee animations probably.

Quite probably this. BioWare said that storing both animation sets in the memory cost an additional ~2mb. A measily 2mb. But on consoles, that was kind of a big deal, and they cut it.

Meanwhile in 8GB PC RAM land...

I'm not a PC gamer, but that's some bullshit. Stop merely "porting" to PC, devs!

Wow you gotta be kidding me lol, ugh. I have been on a blackout for this game after loving the second but after reading some impressions in here I think I better try the demo.

Impressions:

The Earth invasion was cool, they cranked up the cinematography, now more than ever a lot of shit happens in the backgrounds, but I was kinda expecting more, It didn't had the impact that I expected, I mean fucking Reapers are invading earth, I expected a few more things that big ass lasers here and there and explosions, I wanted people running for her life, buildings failing to the ground....I expected Armaggedon sci-fi version.

But it was quite good, though.

Combat feels way better than ME2, Shepard feels faster, lighter and way more confortable to control, ME2 Shepard was too sluggish in comparisson, it was like controlling a tank that could only sprint forward, now Shepard can control the direction of the sprint more efficiently, rolling, quickly changing covers, ME2 was a decent FPS at best, ME3 gets closer to a really good shooter.

Nice to se charge is still awesome, though game is very easy on normal.
