Well if they are trying to cover up an incident, it isn't working.

I imagine they're just trying to stop people entering the area while there's still danger of more explosions. It's what i'd do with something this big.
If you're not there to help then stay out of the way for a while, they don't want to worry about more people entering the area when they're trying to work out what the hell to do and where to start.

Cripes, you can see the burning debris (liquid?) raining down again in some of these videos. I guess a huge area around the initial explosion is now burning. What a scary sight. Best of luck to the rescue and firefighting squads - and of course the general populace.
 
That's horrifying. The way it lit up the nearby town was...damn. I've heard that nukes are so powerful it's essentially like day light. I can't even fathom that shit.

I'm having difficulty believing that the body count is only 40. There's no way with an explosion that huge in such a populated city.
