After playing basically all day yesterday, I am blown away by the single player. Everything from the story to the gunplay is just amazing to me. I played a little bit of MP, but SP has kept my attention. I just got to the part when Max
shaves his head
. Bravo to Rockstar for delivering another great title this gen. Other than LA Noire, they have killed it for me so far.
Agreed. I actually just started LA Noire and really like it so far, but starting with RDR, Rockstar has been killing it.

Rockstar only published LA Noire. Team Bondi was the developer.

Golden guns are just cosmetic, right? I think they look a little ridiculous but if they have other benefits I'll keep them on. If turn the effects off, can I still find the pieces? I like looking for them.

You can still find the pieces.

Game is pretty fucking incredible thus far. There is a ton of scenario variety and I love the way it jumps in and out of cutscenes. Just feels incredibly cinematic without seizing control from the player completely. The physics and animation are, without a doubt, some of the finest I've ever experienced in a shooter. I cannot believe how impressive the bullet reactions are. This really makes the fire fights feel procedural.

My only complaint would be the lack of melee. I know Max Payne is all about fire arms, but I really think some light melee combat would add a lot to the strategy and flow of the game. I'm thinking something along the lines of Uncharted 2 + 3 here.

Playing on PS3 and finding the framerate to be a bit sluggish at points but it's generally not bad. I really have a bad feeling about the PC version, though, as it very clearly shares some technology with GTA4 which still runs like dogshit on my PC (despite FRAPS reporting 60 fps). It just feels awful. I also fear that the transitions between cinematic and gameplay will be spoiled somewhat. As it stands, any video sequences are of high enough quality that it's almost impossible to tell at a glance whether you're viewing such a sequence or the scene is being handled in realtime. On the PC I'm sure the 720p video is going to stand out like a sore thumb next to the realtime 60 fps gameplay.

After playing a few hours of MP last night.. it has some serious balancing issues. It is fun but man do I feel many will rage over WTF moments.

Gang wars is a highlight for me but remember to go into it knowing you will die often right off the bat.

Guys whats the version of choice , I am buying Friday an need to know?PS3 or Xbox?

I think they are pretty much on par from what I have heard. Comes down to if you want to swap discs during single player and where your friends are playing.

The hyperbole about the multiplayer is really funn. I doubt even 75% in this thread will even be playing the multiplayer in 3 months. hope i'm proved wrong though...

Might go for the xbox version, online multiplayer seems to be better on live over PSN where I am.But that disc swoping is a bit of a turn off, hmmmmm

People enjoying this are making me angry + intrigued + suspicious at the same time. Angry because I already have it out against this game and sort of don't want to like it, intrigued because despite my hatred of it it's still a spin-off to the best shooters of all time so I still want to play it, and suspicious because I already know people on gaf have terrible taste sometimes (and are easily susceptible to hype). People here still think Red Dead Redemption was incredible and I thought it was one of the worst games I've ever had the misfortune of playing.

I wouldn't go that far about RDR but I certainly did not love it. The cutscenes I saw from this in some of the review videos were terrible and turned me away from the game, but all of these good impressions cannot be denied and there's nothing I love to do more than eat crow.

It's 720p with FXAA

interesting. rockstar finally released a ps3 game at 720p. thank god for fxaa and mlaa, helps these devs put out ps3 games with pretty good image quality now. no more quincux!!

edit: just saw the link and it appears that guy is merely guessing the res and aa method?

That makes me judge your taste in games. With you, it is impossible to say if you will or will not like Max Payne 3. You are better off playing russian roulette.

I'd be interested to see what you think, but I honestly don't think you'd enjoy it. Especially if you didn't enjoy past Rockstar games.

Has anybody mentioned the
sniping part
. The controls changed completely and caught me off guard... it's the only complaint I have so far though. Well, I wish you could turn off all that visual crap during the cut scenes as well.

Yesterday I learned that only my right thumb understands inverted controls...

It happens with the MP5 as well. Zooming in with weapons that has a scope has you aiming with the left stick. The only negative I can come up with.

Is it possible you just don't like Rockstar games? I could have sworn that you were vocal about your dislike of GTA IV as well.

I'm no fan of Red Dead (very dull experience for me), but I'm really enjoying Max Payne 3. It really feels nothing like any of their other recent games. It feels like a cross between Max Payne and Uncharted to me.

WOOHOOOOOOOOOO two days early fuck yes fuck that friday noise.

Installing now, rolling up some weed and I have HEALTH - Tears on repeat..

LETS DO THIS

Start on hard btw or on normal? Im gonna play with free aim..

Absolutely. Probably the best 3rd person shooter you'll ever play ;) And you can catch yourself up on the story through Youtube or something.

You don't need to play the first 2 games to understand the story. R* does a good job in informing the players of Max's painful history. Haha Sooo fucking good. God damn I love this game.

Just starting it but from the reviews the game seems to have a waaaaaaay more serious tone then MP1 and MP2.

Think Man on Fire or some shit when dealing with MP3. You should be fine.

Yeah, definitely. It's pretty self-contained.

Awesome! Thanks for the replies!

They both look identical. Just gotta make a choice over the superior 360 controller or the one disc for the PS3 version. Hmmm....

Well... I think I'm about to finish up the SP. Have to run an errand first.

Surprisingly, I love the MP. Will be playing this from now on w/ some battlefield mixed in.

My first playthrough is on normal. It's been a stiff challenge at times. I fucking died a lot. Game pulls no punches.

My only complaint would be the lack of melee. I know Max Payne is all about fire arms, but I really think some light melee combat would add a lot to the strategy and flow of the game. I'm thinking something along the lines of Uncharted 2 + 3 here.

There is melee. It might not be as deep (lol) as uncharted, but it's there. And I'd argue the shot-to-the-face kill you get to do during a disarm is basically cooler and more fun than UC's entire melee system combined...

Dixons is royally fucked if they were the one's who sold the game first.

I'd go for normal. Game is surprisingly difficult on normal as it is.

Fortunately, dying results in an instant retry. The game does not force you to wait through a loading screen to give it another shot so it's less frustrating as a result.

Everything I love has been said already but I can't stress enough how refreshing it is, for me at least, to have a game with rock solid mechanics and an AI that's REALLY challenging (without being cheap or suicidal; ex: Uncharted 3), complete with a non-regenerating health system is refreshing in this day and age of hand-holding design from most developers of AAA titles.

If I die in Max Payne 3, it's my fault. I wasn't cautious enough or my strategy was wrong. The game punishes me for it, but not wrongfully. I'm in a bad spot at a checkpoint? The game will give me a little push whether I have no ammo left or about to die health-wise.

I'm starting to 'get' the game and like the previous Payne games, I'm going to play it multiple times and as I get better at it, the game will also become more and more enjoyable.

Solid all around. Finished disc one last night, can't wait to continue Max's journey tonight! :D

The enemy AI is a huge positive for me, so far. You can't just sit and wait for enemies to come into your view. What skill level are you playing on?

This is easily my favorite game in forever. The areas they put focus on just happen to be exactly what I love in videogames. So it's like a great fit. Even the damn mutilplayer is clicking with me.

I also love that the story is so goddamn grim. So many things happened I wasn't expecting.

This speaks more to your tastes than the majority's tastes. RDR is GotG.

RDR was a complete empty shell of a game. It had nothing. It was too dull to comprehend. It was not a game but an excuse to ham fist in a 'hollywood-esque' story similar to GTA4. Nothing was fun in RDR except enjoying the art style/visuals (if you can deal with shitty PS3 port sub HD blurryness) and music. I was really hyped for it because I love Sergio Leone westerns but it was terrible to me.

Forcing you to do stupid shitty chores for the sake of trying to get you to care about characters/story (which did the opposite for me and I hated everyone), showing you fun things (da vinci plane and car) but never allowing you to play with them, every mission being boring as shit shooting gallery, nothing in the vast desert except a few towns unlike the Fallout series which has tons of stuff you can explore. It was missing almost everything, just really dreadful all around. Ending was cool though and the controls were a huge step up from GTA4.

Is it possible you just don't like Rockstar games? I could have sworn that you were vocal about your dislike of GTA IV as well.

I loved them last gen. I liked GTA4 the first time I played it but it hasn't aged well and Rockstar takes too long to make improvements/sequels now. When Assassins Creed games come out and still have huge sandbox worlds with tons of features added every year it makes me look at Rockstar as too slow despite their games always having tons of polish. I didn't like the Biker DLC at all but I loved Ballad of Gay Tony and am really hyped/looking forward to GTA5.

Hard is pretty hit or miss with the challenge. There are some sections where you will probably die a LOT(seriously, rinse and repeat until something clicks), but those are usually a fault of the checkpoint system. The plus to this is that I found a fair number of ways to get through certain checkpoints(holding back, flanking, diving over certain sections, etc) that really ended up being quite awesome. The parts I had trouble with so far were:
mainly the stadium section where your buddy first gets the rifle. I was low on ammo to begin with, but they send a TON of people on you right then...yea took me awhile to pass that. I ended up having to double back and hide a few times. Then I had some trouble with the latter part of that level where you're up higher and they are constantly throwing grenades at you. Had to slo-mo dive down the stands(thought it was too risky, but it actually worked)

The checkpoint system seems weird at times, as it has the habit of replenishing your health randomly(not gonna complain), spawning you out of cover/in the open, spawning you with your pistol out(not a big deal), etc.

It's definitely my ONLY gripe with the SP atm. As for difficulty: if you're new to Max Payne, go for easy and whatever lock mode suites you. If you've played Max and it's been awhile, you might want to go easy/normal. Hard definitely requires a slower play style.

Seriously, these reviews of 6's and 7's should be illegal. No fucking way is this game not a 9 or 10 with the latter being my score for the game.
Fucking Rockstar you fucking geniuses, I welcome you as the supreme rulers of our planet...

So did I. Assassins Creed's environments are a bit easier to create then the huge environment of Liberty City. I think Liberty City is honestly the best city in a video game to this day.

yep, there is definitely melee. i was just about to correct that poster myself.

in fact, it is badass brutal melee. the first time i pistol whipped a dude in the head and then immediately shot hiim in the face i was like "holy shit, this game!". this may be the most brutally violent (in a realistic way, not god of war like) game i have ever played (i have never played the soldier of fortune series). one time i kept pulling the trigger after a bullet cam (usually i don't to conserve ammo) and dude was on the ground with arterial spray shooting out of his stomach and chest from several holes. it was gruesomely detailed.

Think of your favorite action movie. Think of those moments when you can't help but say, "Fuck. That was incredible!". I have had more of those reactions in Act 1 of Max Payne than any other game in recent memory. This game gets in my DNA. No doubt.

This and this.

I've liked R* this gen but I'd be lying if i said i haven't been disappointed with their output this gen. RDR for me is also the most overrated game ever

Still I am looking forward to playing MP3 come Friday :)

Yeah, first time I got into a melee I was shocked at how detailed and gruesome they did it. I shot a dude in the face with the FAL about 3 times and there was nothing left of his face.
