Media Create Sales: 09/08 - 09/14

/sigh I wish the consoles sales would pick up, I'm not sure how bad they are compared to last gen but it's not pretty compared to the hand helds. Also I'm happy the 360 is doing well, the predictability of these threads usually makes them boring, it's nice to see the list get shuffled around a bit.
Let's see. The numbers Jonnyram posted would be for the week of September 15, and the listed home consoles add up to 56.5K. Let me try equivalent weeks from Famitsu data in past years...

2000-09-18: 52.1K
2001-09-17: 81.0K GCN's second week.
2002-09-16: 61.6K
2003-09-15: 44.3K
2004-09-13: 34.4K
2005-09-12: 25.4K
2006-09-18: 33.2K
2007-09-17: 52.7K

As it turns out, this year's home console sales are higher than most of the last decade. I'm sure if one were to do the equivalent calculations for handhelds, though, one would see 2006-2008 creaming the years before it. Consoles are just a smaller part of the whole now.

Yeah, seems so.

Oh, DB DS had a nice increase from the first day numbers, this bodes very well for its legs.

One Piece's second week is way above the first title's second week, that had quite some legs, this one should do a bit better even.

RT is just wow, ES not so much.

And people are spoiled by how well the portables are doing, Wii's numbers are not bad at all, considering the time of the year and the coinciding lack of software.

Platinum is owning Emerald, and just surpassed DQV.

Emerald took about 3.5 months to sell 1,375,233, including the 2004 holiday season.

Wow, RTG is amazing. Looks like it will be a million seller when all is said and done. Who would have thought?

Other than that, anyone know when Wii Music hits Japan? It'll be interesting to see what the reaction is from all the folks who have picked up Wii Sports, Play and Fit...

DS has picked up a notch again both in terms of hardware and software, completely leaving the other systems in the dust.

There is absolutely no question who the king is. (As if it wasn't clear enough already!)

Is it true you can actually obtain Shaymin in this one?

Good results for One Peace Wii, maybe some non-Nintendo software can sale a bit, and Fire Emblem DS, not totally overlooked.

Well there is PSP-3000 incoming, that has to have some impact on PSP's sales. I do expect DS to have the biggest holiday though.

Definitely I didn't expect Pokémon doing that well the second week. Probably it will require a while to sell less then 100k for week.

ORLY. PantherLotus predicted 13k, which is extremely close (hurr hurr), especially when compared to jimbo's prediction of 21k.

That's because I needed to give Panther some ammo to get me back for calling him out and pulled a 360 number out of my ass(halfway between last week's numbers and his prediction):D

Secretly I thought he was pretty dead on this past week and he can be when he doesn't have the attitude of the 360 will continue to suck and actually takes a good educated shot at predicting sales for it, like he did for this week

Anyway, will wait for MC numbers, and I am more curious to see where 360 sales will fall next week because these numbers include an apparent shortage of SKU. We won't know for sure until next week's numbers.

Hmm...

Vesperia spike was around 24k, then dropped at 8k. [75%]
IU (?) spike was around 28k, then dropped at 14k. [50%]
I'd say the difference is minimal.

Actually none of that is normal. There was a shortage after Vesperia, which led up to IU(and that probably wasn't the main reason for the spike anyway, it was the price drop and the previous shortage)

And this week apparently had SKU shortages as well. So, so far none of it was normal. And neither is outselling the PS3 for 2 weeks in a row.

Besides, the normal according to you and a couple of other people in this forum is 3k a week. So it's actually quite higher than "that normal".

I expect it to outsell the PS3 again next week.

So what's the stock status of 360 in Japan?

This is what I want to know as well. I guess we will find out next week but I hoped someone would give us a heads-up.

RTG is gonna be a million seller. I really can't believe it.

Also, it would be kinda funny to see Pokemon Platinum come from behind and steal the Best in 2008 crown from Monster Hunter.

It just might happen, Pokemon D/P is still selling on a regular basis

Media Create mentioned there being a 360 shortage in last weeks post.

DS, Wii and PSP did exactly like last week (rounded 63k, 27k and 26k). I think that unless Nintendo surprises us with some hardware news in the forthcoming event, the only thing worth looking forward hardware-wise this year end will be PSP new model. PSP 1000 sold 6m in a little less than 3 years meanwhile PSP 2000 has sold a little bit more than 4m in one year. It'll be difficult to see any trends with all the launch fuzz, big games and Christmas though. Although as every launch, it'll be interesting to see how much can Sony supply if needed, if the old base will be upgrading for a second or third time and such.

Also nice debut for Hitman PSP which we didn't get first day sales (and basically I don't think anyone here gives a shit about such game), so it surprised me to see its 24k which is among the best debuts for the franchise (DS has at least 6 Hitman games going by garaph, best first week being 28k from a game two months ago). Very nice DB DS numbers too.

Oh no not again with the shortages bullshit. You sound like a Microsoft shill every time you repeat that crap.

As much as its hard to believe, at least as of last weeks Media Create numbers, there was (is?) a shortage, if Media Create is considered a reliable source on the Japanese market.

Quazar said:

Seems Amazon Japan are out of stock on a few of the models, but I have no idea what things are like overall there. You wouldn't think it would be so difficult to ship in a hundred thousand or so.

Do you have some inside info that this isn't the case? Or do you have a problem with the truth?

Shortages should ALWAYS be taken into consideration when you are talking about sales numbers, and predictions, and trends.

I know that. My question is do we know if this current 14k was during a FULL supply period. You can't deffinitely say "this is where it has settled" if there are still shortages. That has to be fixed first before a "trend", or "average" can be re-established.

This was an interesting development. jimbo can I count on you to quote my prediction or should we wait until the MC numbers release?

Man, you are feeling good this week :D I knew you could do a fair job on the 360 when you actually tried.

You were totally wrong on the PSP though (going by Famitsu at least). You called 33k and it only did 26k.

Well, for certain definitions of 'totally', anyway. :D

Pokemon Diamond will probably pass Monster Hunter Portable 2G at some point, but not before December 31st. With a holiday boost, MHP2G could be close to 2.6M by the end of the year (bare minimum is 2.5M). Pokemon would have to average over 100k a week for the rest of the year to match that. I can see Pokemon having a few 100k weeks in December, but it is going to drop below 50k by late October/early November.

Platinum.

Top 5 games in 2007 (and the only 5 > 700K through 20080907.)

PSP Monster Hunter Portable 2 G - 2,411,173 (20080907)
WII Wii Fit - 1,724,399 (20080907)
WII Mario Kart Wii - 1,706,402 (20080907)
WII Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 1,666,323 (20080629)
NDS Dragon Quest V - 1,131,378 (20080907)

Through 2007 at this point, there were only 3 million sellers but 10 games > 700K.

Havent noticed, is Fatal Frame still in top 50? Is it the #1 selling in the series yet?
As of the latest official Famitsu numbers, it's still #3, but less than 6K behind number 1. I don't think it makes the next Top 30, so it may be a while before we see if it's become #1.
