Wow...And I thought we in the US had cornered the market on stupid terms.

You have, hence why you refer to the plural with the abbreviation of the singular. Mathematic = math, mathematics = maths.

I would just like to state for the record that it is not possible to butcher math as much as I did eariler in this thread. I take PRIDE in that...

*cries himself to sleep*

Pshaw! After saying "hence," the word "why" is redundent, making its usage there incorrect.

this got to be the best thread ever :lol :lol

Sorry, but "maths" is one of the dumbest terms this world has ever seen. On par with "metrosexual" and "labradoodle"...

Which is why these threads shouldn't be put in the archive until they're dead. The copy of this thread in the Sales Archive is only 221 posts long. People just don't listen to me. :(

Its a very common word here, no one has ever complained about it or said it isnt correct to use. Although surely we can do what we want with the language we made.

... in England, we do more than one sum.

How is US Math class? Once you've solved 6 = y - 2, is that it done?

In the US we read more than one book yet it is still literature class. Please tell me you don't call it "literatures"

We also have biology class where we study more than one living organism. We don't call it "biologies".

So you call mathamatics mathamatic?

The point they are making is the short fort of a longer plural word is also plural. Literature nor biology are plural to begin with.

That's what happens when you restructure a post and don't proof-read.

No, it is the plural of the abbreviation of mathematic

They are not comparable terms. You are basically arguing that the word "mathematics" is stupid, when clearly it isnt, you are

There are several words in the English language that are the same in both singular and plural. Math is one of them. And not I'm not arguing "mathematics" is a stupid word. I'm arguing that your derivative "maths" is.

P.S -- No need to sling insults.

I've heard several math and CS profs use it during lectures, and I've seen it in several texts.

Oh, and how about those DS numbers? :D
