Media Create Sales: 6/30 - 7/6

I think what's disappointing is that TOS2, despite being on a much more popular platform that TOS1, is actually performing worse than its predecessor.

TOS1 sold around 320K so hopefully TOS2 will eventually reach similar numbers. But with such a sharp drop-off like this week, it's doubtful.

I don't understand this. The Tales series is not in the same state it was back then. They're basically running it into the ground with a new Tales game every few months. Unless there is something outstanding about the game, I don't see it putting up those kinds of numbers. They should give it some time to breathe, or maybe release one Tales game a year or something. To be honest, I'm surprised it sold as much as it has.

I think the game is selling fairly well. agree with you here, how many Tales of games have they announced recently? they're on every platform...

I'm not too bothered by lots of tales. They're all mostly so unrelated to each other, that it's not like they're actually a franchise. Seems more like a naming scheme than a series. I look at Tales like those monthly trashy paperback romances.

And the problem isn't necessarily that they are on every platform, but that it appears they are stretching themselves so thin that all of the current Tales games releasing now or in the near future look like they aren't as good a quality as they could be.

I can try to check the available stock of ToS2. As of Monday, it was not sold out anywhere (except the smallest shop).

Well, that is true. It was just my reasoning as to why some may be disappointed with these numbers.

But I agree that the market is oversaturated with Tales games and the series is losing its appeal.

A successor can be outsold by the original for many variety of reasons. Platform is one of them, but it's not the only one.

Would you have expected FFX-2 to outsell FFX? Probably not. And it didn't.

Well, I'm not sure about "losing its appeal," but each game individually should (I think) logically be treated as less of an event, as Joshua's posts in the last thread demonstrated (here and here), since people only have limited time and/or money to play so many.

But yeah, I'm not disappointed by its sales even though I'm really looking forward to playing ToS: DotNW myself. It's primarily supposed to be aimed squarely at people who enjoyed ToS and wanted a storyline sequel--which should be enough to automatically cut its sales down to an extent. It can only draw upon a certain percentage of ToS buyers and maybe a smaller audience of extra people new to the series or new to the Symphonia universe in particular.

Of course, maybe one could say that ToS: KoR should be able to reach closer to the mark of ToS on GC because it's actually drawing upon the combined audiences from ToS on GC and ToS on PS2... I guess I might somewhat see that.

Pretty slow week all around. ToS drops sharply so it probably won't have the good legs (for an RPG at least) of ToS GC.

Cheese is moving to Japan - he had a parser which did most of the work. You can't expect cvx to do all that work by himself. If you want to contribute feel free to do so.

I apologize for not being on top of the threads like Cheese did.

Cheese is in the process of moving to Japan and has no time. But, when he is able, he'll be running through the threads and updating the information as usual.

It takes a LONG time to manually do it the way he did, and time-wise it's not worth it to do it manually when he'll replace it in due time. If anyone translated games 11 - 40, PM me and I'll place the list in the OP. Thanks!

What's the longest the same PS3 game has held onto the top 10? Does MGS4 hold that title yet?
By Famitsu's count, Hot Shots Golf 5 was for 3-4 weeks. The last section was one of their two-week periods, making distinguishing weekly ranks difficult.

Looking at Media Create from the same period... they have it in the top 10 for 4 weeks. So MGS4 ties that.

Band Brothers and ToS2 did good. Overall a pretty slow week though

Wii Fit had always outsold MHP2G in total sales.

Sub-50K made me wonder how low things really get. So I made this query to display (from Famitsu data) the #1s of each week from lowest to greatest. Same caveats as ever: only systems from PS2 on, and multiple weeks combined into one are exempt.

Most of the lower weeks are from the 2001-2003 period. There are two weeks from 2007 in the sub-50K camp, though, 10-15 at 39K and 05-21 at 40K.
Wii Fit had always outsold MHP2G in total sales.
Media Create and Famitsu disagree on this. You can see from the numbers at the top that MC has Wii Fit with the lead, but on Famitsu...

Ugh...

ToS2 is going to suffer the same fate as DQS. Undershipped (or underordered), and by the time more are shipped, used copies are already coming out.

DQS was also like a 10 hour game, so hopefully this will be a little different.

Because I want to check if MGS4 is placed where it should be (top 3). It's incredible how dumb it looks with it selling less than a mil.

ToS sales aren't great, but I don't think they are disappointing given this has been positioned as a spin off from the start.

2ch watchers..and Famitsu numbers yet?

Greetings from Japan. J-GAF, I am one of us. I'm fairly settled in here, but wouldn't you know it, I get a rotten headache and cough right when I get here.

If you guys would like me to take up the reigns again, I may be able to at least provide the OP contents. I'll be on the trains or in class when the weekly data goes live, so that's a no-go unless people want threads posted automatically without any copy-editing.

Anyways, it didn't look like too many people missed the translations and presentation. *shrug*

Yeah; I put in the labels for MGS2 and MGS3, but this morning I've also been tinkering with the line generators themselves to make shorter URLs since that massive Tales comparison yesterday seemed to be bursting at the seams. Looks like I unintentionally busted label back-compatibility. Should be fixed now, unless the older one is cached.

It is definitely missed, even if I'm not a common poster in these threads, I did enjoy the organization and usefulness of the layout you provided when reading them.

I don't know if thread length is any indication, or maybe it's just slower times, but the threads seem shorter without your OP too!

Thanks for the numbers everyone! :)

I wonder what happend to the Ratchet & Clank interest in Japan by the way. Ratchet & Clank 4's first week was 88,497 (thanks Joshua :)) while Ratch & Clank 5's first week is 5,300.

EDIT: Or is R&C5 the port of R&C: Size Matters for PSP? If so, the PSP version sold 127,724 (LTD that is, first week is 39,529) so maybe people know that it is a port (i think it is atleast?) and that most people who are interested in Ratchet & Clank have already played the the PSP version.

EDIT2: Or maybe the PS2 in general has lost quite some interest compared to how it was before. Ratchet & Clank 4 was released in late 2005, so its about 2.5 years ago compared to when Ratchet & Clank 5 was released. Maybe people were much more interested in PS2 back in late 2005 when Ratchet & Clank 4 was released compared to when Ratchet & Clank 5 was released.

When you want to read a graph, a good place to start is the legend. It provides helpful hints to tell you what the lines represent. Next, you can read the axis markers to derive from context what each dimension of the graph represents. CHEAT CODE: The x-axis of a graph is often the measure of time!

Edit: I've since been informed that the legend was not properly displayed when you posted, so this post is no longer directed at you.

Ok, thanks for the info to both of you! :) Ok so the latest japanese version of Ratchet & Clank for PS2 got a "5" in its name, i didnt know that. I dont think the european or american version have a "5" in the title atleast. I guess the already releasedPSP version can be one reason why Ratchet & Clank 5 sold so much less the first week compared to Ratchet & Clank 4, but i dont know.

This post is so much more entertaining if I imagine that you're a stealth NPD shill attempting to turn the tides of Sales-Age opinion away from the willy-nilly world of free data provided by the Media Create. After all, if we truly valued data, it would have monetary value. Whereas Media Create whores out its data any schlub on the street, NPD is a high-class data escort service.

What I don't understand is why people expected MGS4 to deviate largely from the sales of the prior games in the series. Even fans of the game call it a love letter to them, so if you're not a fan already where's the inherent appeal?
