Media Create Sales: Week 14, 2012 (Apr 02 - Apr 08)

And in case no one else posted it a reputable Gaf poster (creamsugar) said the Vita did a little over 200k for the month of March in the US which works out to be about 40k a week for the 5 week month.
Unfortunately, a weekly average is meaningless coming off of a launch. There will be a BIG variation between the 1st week of the month (only 5 days out from launch) and the 5th week of the month after launch hype has died down. It would be cool if we had a rough idea of what it was selling in weeks 4 and 5 of March, but there's just no way to know (except that it was obviously below 40k).

True and like others have said I expect the weekly sales to be even lower in April where a sub 150k month is a real possibility. Even maintaining 40k a week in April (which might be hard with Disgaea 3 as the only retail release for the month) would put it at 160k. May at least has the MK port (which looks like a quality port with lots of content) and the Resistance side story. I don't expect the stratosphere from these 2 releases but they will at least help the Vita's visibility as an "HD console experience on the go".

And for what it's worth (not much, I realize) there were still First Edition Bundles (the 3G one with the packed in 8GB memory card and SSD voucher) on the shelves when I was at Wal Mart earlier today. Looks like even with the decent first 2 months on the market Sony still hasn't sold through the initial shipment.

I will say though that among my gamer friends and colleagues from the very high volume Gamestop that I used to be an Assistant Manager at the Vita at least has very good word of mouth. It's certainly not selling a ton even at this particularly busy store but most of the staff own one and love it and I keep getting random friend requests via folks who have seen me show up in that shopping center via Near and want to chat about the Vita and gaming. That, at least, is a positive sign.

Considering that the 1st week of March was still technically part of launch week for the platform, I expect that Vita was probably somewhere down around 20-25k by week 5 of March. Sub-150k in April is pretty much a certainty (barring a surprise price drop). Whether it can hold on to 100k or not seems the more likely benchmark.

Am I mistaken or was there the appearance of a MH logo for VITA at some expo or something?

I somehow can't picture Vita not getting a MH game ever in its whole life. Capcom can not be such an asshole.

that would be the biggest backstabbing move in gaming I can think off since FF7 went to PS1 from N64 and remained there exclusive.

I can see games losing exclusivity like FFXIII and RE4 but plain changing platforms and giving the middle finger? I'd be careful if I were capcom to not piss off any hardware makers so blatantly.

Have you already forgotten MH3? That one was announced for PS3 even and ended up being exclusive for Wii, with 3DS getting the G version. Like MH2 on PS2 and MH2G on PSP.

MH games tend to be exclusive until they get ported to hardware of comparable power very late. The best HD gaming got was an upscaled emulated version of MHP3 and some semi-exclusive PC/360 games.

The Playstation Portable debuted at ¥19.8k. The Nintendo DS debuted at ¥15k. It's 25% higher than any mainstream portable line had ever released at and, 3DS aside, 67% higher than any market-winning portable line had ever released at. Maybe it's not super, but it's still a pretty big leap of what we'd had before. I don't think that the Vita would have sold any better had the 3DS not dropped. I think both, in fact, would have continued to sell poorly.
Yep, it was mostly the "super" part i wanted to comment on. And concidering the offerings, i dont think that the price is really that high in comparison to other devices either. But i agree that it can be seen as a high price compared to what is normal in Japan for handheld gaming devices.

Seemed strange at first that Fire Emblem would be one of the few 3DS games with a chance to out-perform the DS predecessors, but I guess it's just a case of original game > remake.

It wasn't hinted, what they announced at E3 last year was official. There was already an Iwata Asks about it too:

Yes yes I know, I was saying hinted because we know nothign about it, so it's hard to tell something about it's key features and so on.
I was just wondering if we could share our thoughts about it in terms of sales potential, looking at the incredible performances of the Wii version nowadays..

don't worry, 5k is the next break point

I'd say "Below the Wii" more than that.

It's a shame DQX isn't on the cards any time soon, because I think it'd be interesting if the Vita didn't drop below the Wii as much as the Wii went up past the Vita!

- I said a couple years ago that Capcom would want to bring their top franchises to 3DS early on in order to establish themselves on the platform, because they had the worst performance of any of the top Japanese publishers on the DS

Hand on heart, for a good few seconds I sat there genuinely thinking "Really? I thought the Castlevania titles did okay".

Dammit, that Capkonami thing is infectious.

You're mad if you think Capcom's going to spoil the release of their own new game (4) by announcing a similar game on another system before its release, assuming something even exists.

To be fair, they have previous. RE6 being announced just before Revelations was released, anyone? Wasn't RE4 PS2 announced just before the GC release, too? I'm not sure about the latter.

I'd still think it'd be absurd, mind. But then, I thought *that* was absurd, too.

I expect MH4P no less and Vita sales will explode thats for sure.

I'm expecting Nintendo to launch the dual stick 3DS revision alongside MH4. And you can bet sales will explode.

With 3DS continuing to dominate and Vita continuing to fall further behind the thought of an original, from the ground up MH for Vita, just doesn't sound like a possibility. A port will help Vita sales, but Sony needs an original MH to make a lasting impact.

Gosh, I hadn't thought of that sort of thing, I was more focussing on the idea of releases driving sales.

My gut's saying the Vita would still take that, but I wouldn't be too surprised if the Wii overtook it. Are there any big releases on either platform at that time (Is that when P4's due? It'd be a nice association with the subtitle, at least)

Wii has MP9 and VITA has some titles that are not very big.

P4 comes in June and Golden week is coming in a couple weeks.

To be fair, Sony never released an official add on to the machine and games never supported it. That is what is making me hold out for a dual analog version of the 3DS.

Not enough. 3DS hasn't still the driving force of PS2 or NDS unfortunately. And the other systems are all pulling the bar down, maybe the PSP being the exception.

3DS isn't DS but Nintendo left 3DS at auto pilot the first quarter, the didn't even try. PSP is the system with the biggest drop this year at hw and sw.

Either way find what other major market will have positive change in 2012 comparing to 2011. Western markets are saturated. If it's not an advertised high profile game most likely it will pull low to medium numbers, let alone the new IPs. The longer this generation goes things will get worse, Japan at least has started to move forward at that aspect.

Uhh...can someone explain the GTA PSP game?

It's GTA.

How can you say never when there's a Circle Pad Pro attatchment that adds a second stick, as well as games that support dual sticks?
One can only imagine that support for CPP will be included in many more games in the future, so yeah, I'm totally expecting the first 3DS revision to include dual sticks. And what better game to launch the revision in Japan than MH4?

As for Sony a dual stick PSP would've been a much smarter move than the Go.

What is interesting is that if/when Nintendo does a redesign, they also have to redesign the CPP addon. I dont think that the 3DS redesign will be the exact same shape and form at least. Well, they can always stop to support the CPP too of course.

If Nintendo reeeally didn't care about a second analog stick I don't think they'd have released the CPP or regressed to a dual stick setup on the home console.

DS at its peak, no. But it's matching PS2's best year very closely.

They certanly cared enough to create and sell the CPP and to make Kid Icarus use it.

Kid Icarus use of CPP is laughable. It's just another peripheral from the many Nintendo releases every year. It's not be the de facto control system for first and third party games and I don't see this situation changes.

Games released until now are playable without the need of the CPP and only a few of them use it.
The point is that there is a solution for non-buyers of the (probable) 3DS redesign to play dual stick games and Nintendo will make a big mistake if the redesign doesn't include a second circle pad. This is not a PSP-1000 -> PSP dual analog/touch screen situation.

This thing is basically what I expect the 3DS redesign to look like + a 3D screen

Making 3DS a WiiU controller will be the big mistake. They try to offer different experiences between handhelds and home consoles, not the same.

How much has CPP sold so far? 100, 200, 300k? Changing hardware design doesn't worth it.

At bare minimum we know it sold 100k from the mh3g bundle

They are trying to offer different experiences by making the games on the handheld control worse? Because the 3DS already looks like a gimped WiiU controller and it really isn't offering different experiences. Or at least it isn't offering experiences that will become "not different" because there's a second slide pad.

Also I don't think it matters how many units the CPP has sold. 3DS is going to have a lot of 3D games and these games benefit greatly from having a second analog stick. There's no reasonable excuse to not have it.

Chris1964

First and most reasoanable excuse I see is that Nintendo admits mistake at the original design. Knowing how Nintendo works this is enough.

They will first have to seriously shrink the circuitry on the 3DS, or make it bigger, cause as it stands there's no place to fit a second analog pad right now.
