Sorry to be ignorant, but what Tax hike?

Last week, a tax hike went into effect for Japan, where it was raised from 5% to 8%.

That's why you saw a nice increase for sales the week before, since consumers were getting their last chance with the 5% tax.

Relative to last week hardware salesnumbers:
1. 360 = 95.2%
2. PS3 = 72.3%
3. PSP = 67.8%
4. PS4 = 62.3%
5. WiU = 58.8%
6. PSV = 56.9%
7. 3DS = 54.9%

The Japanese are growing tired of handheld gaming and the new consoles from Sony and Nintendo struggle to gain any momentum. The only console to maintain its sales is the Xbox 360. In my opinion now is the perfect time to introduce The One to the Japanese and win the Japanese console market with a knockout.

Surely you jest....

Jesus what happen to you Japan?! UK is half the population and doing 10x times better in the console space i can't understand how an entire country switched their minds from home consoles to handhelds its like they were hit by a virus

If the 3DS' successor isn't much more powerful than the Vita (which isn't too unlikely, because Nintendo), I could see it living through 2 generations in Japan if they can cut the price further. Might surprise everyone with its LTD when everything's said and done.

I really wouldn't be surprised to see the Vita outliving the 3DS and becoming the lead platform to make multiplatform Vita/4DS titles for.

Is it possible the PS4 goes below Wii U sales? And if so, how quick do you think FF and KH gets a Wii U version?

It's already tracking behind it launch aligned. Week to week it essentially guaranteed to be below Wii U for awhile once Kart drops.

That said, sales for both systems are horrific.

PS4's biggest issue is no Japanese games, there's nothing to put on the chalkboard :'(

exactly.

If japanese won't buy Ps4 when the japanese game will be released, they won't buy any other console and the japanese market won't be important anymore in the global context, surpassed by emerging market and, depending on its decline, existing markets like the UK.

Imho the biggest problems are both the japanese industry: once it will be on the next gen, things will normalize.

Yep just as I thought with the Natural Doctrine sales...

With how the game was designed & unfortunately looks its going to stay that way pretty much with sales and only have a niche following.

This is coming from someone that actually likes the title too.

A; No it hasn't, unless it was people like you being sarcastic.

B; It's clear that it was supply constrained for a week or two. Famitsu said as much. That doesn't indicate there is / was some huge built-up demand. It just means that for that short period, there was demand ever so slightly in excess of ready supply.

Be nice if Sony did something...anything.

What should they do? Hold a gun to the head of third party developers so they finally move on from last gen and don't just do handheld stuff?

There is an inherent problem of how the Japanese market works. Developers move on way too slow, there are no Japanese games for the new consoles, sales of consoles suck, developers even less likely to move on. Then repeat this process forever.

Is that yearly or it happened for the first time in a while?

I don't know, something would be better than nothing. Hot shots, ape escape, maybe.

Yes it is, consider that this year will see Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros, not only it's possible, but it is absolutely expected that WiiU outsells PS4 in some weeks (that doesn't mean it will outsell it at the end of the generation, I think most of us expect PS4 to take what is left of that crown).

And no, FF and KH will not get a WiiU version, that ship sailed a long time ago when the Wii didn't get versions of said games (and most 3rd party big titles) and was outselling PS3 worldwide and in Japan. So let's stop the port begging.

Wii didnt get versions of those games in part because they sold good enough to make a profit on the systems they were on. How much of the sales of FF and KH are from japan? If its the majority of sales for those games, its possible it could happen, if the PS4 continues to track this bad they could start thinking of ways to get more sales (if it sells more in the east then in the west that is, if huge amounts of those sales are from the west i dont think it will matter as the PS4 is selling good in the west). (btw, not port begging, i wouldnt buy either of them, just thinking about it from a buisness perspective).

Not happening. Unlike WiiU, PS4's worldwide sales are great. If you suggesting a WiiU version on top of PS4/Xbone, then it's like asking for a PS3 and Xbox version.

Not to mention that while PS4 sales are bad, it is because there's almost nothing out on it that appeals to Japanese audience. Yet. If there's nothing to play, why would anyone buy it. It's a genuine case of PS4 has no games in Japan.

It's also hard to compare PS4 to WiiU, that actually had great launch titles and a better release schedule. If anyone didn't see bad sales coming with this setup, then they must truly been blind.

Not enough games for a blackboard.

i kid, i kid...

The sad truth, it's not even a joke.

I can't see this happening at all.

Sorry, but this won't happen. It's already too late for the Wii U. As sad as it sounds.

An argument about this broke out in last week's thread. How can you be so sure? It's tracking behind Wii U launch aligned (yes, holiday launch for Wii U, etc). It's baseline is creeping down dangerously close to Wii U's baseline (which should be up after Kart) already. Nintendo systems get big holiday spikes; that combined with Kart/Smash will probably hand the Holiday 2014 "win" to Wii U.

That said, if I had to guess, I'd say PS4 will probably overtake Wii U at some point (but not until at least 2016). But it's certainly not a foregone conclusion or lead pipe lock to the extent some here (and last week) are/were trying to say.

The answer to question 1: I can see it happening on the weeks that MK8 and Smash come out.

The answer to question 2: LOL

Question 1: It's highly likely to happen far more often than ONLY those two specific weeks.

Question 2: Once again, I can't see how you could completely rule it out. Can PS4 survive on JUST western games in Japan (until FFXV/KH3? If sales are bad enough there's at least a small chance of a release on more platforms. But, I mostly agree; HIGHLY HIGHLY unlikely; just not quite to the extent of a condescending "LOL".

This isn't a worldwide sales thread. And I like how all of a sudden Wii U had great launch titles and a plethora of games. Sounds a little revisionist to me. What also seems revisionist is the "everybody was expecting PS4 to sell this badly" mantra emerging the last few weeks.

Lol. Good luck with that.

As of last week, launch aligned, it was PS4 491,889 vs Wii U 730,490. Wii U tracking ahead of PS4 by 49%

This week it's PS4 506,739 vs Wii U 747,125. Wii U tracking ahead by 47%.

Obviously it's way too early to call at this point. But a few months ago many people on this board were convinced PS4 would obliterate Wii U's LTD Japan sales within a couple weeks. I'd say all bets are off.

agree with what you said, i dont think its likely for those two games to get put on the Wii U, but if the ps4 continues to track like this, its possible that the Wii U could theoretically have a larger userbase than the PS4 when those games release

Not at all surprising. PS4 offers nothing for Japan, Japan offers nothing for the PS4.

I got banned for relaying that some Japanese friends told me the console was readily available. The hype was not real and it's now official.

Add "third party support" to the board, you can write it pretty big, you won't need space for anything else. One MGSV, FFXV, KH, RE, etc, start releasing they will all be perceived as exclusives in Japan since the XOne has no presence there.

Ouch. Who were the guys who said the PS4 stabilized at 30K because it sold at that rate for two weeks?
And what about all that "supply-constrained" bullshit?

Pure delusion.

Japan is just not a healthy environment for consoles right now. The Japanese are more interested in handhelds in general and the content on systems like Wii U and PS4 just isn't cutting it, unfortunately.

PS4 sales make sense in one country at least. I find it hard to blame japan when you have to add stuff like Knack or hype on the blackboard.

I thought PS4 sales would drop due to the lack for software but not so low so quickly.

Anyone trying to spin or make excuses for such poor numbers needs there head looked at. The PS4 is well on the way to selling under 10k a week. That’s terrible for the Wii U just as it’s terrible for the PS4.
