The fact that one game kept Wii U up in Japan for a year is enough to say that NX has a strong chance of being competitive with a good enough library, even if there's not a handheld version, imo.

I'd expect the console format first if it does launch early 2017, while 3DS rides out a while longer on the releases at the tail end of 2016. So it would take longer until a handheld launches, the console will struggle. Unless Nintendo stumbles its way into a compelling proposition.

I wonder if there will ever be a turn around for traditional gaming in Japan. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo's next pieces of hardware sell worse than the 3DS/WiiU.

It's crazy to think that the WiiU will have as many million sellers as the PSP and GBA, 4 times as much as the PS3.

It's sold about 50k this year so far, the leggiest game on PS4 and more than 1/3 of what it sold on PS3.

Why think small!? Go big, 1000k next week! The planet's tilt axis will go off-kilter as 900k 3DSs spontaneously come into existence in Japan. One would hope they do not have a momentum-vector lest they throw the planet out of stable orbit.

There's nothing about what we know regarding the NX, the state of the industry, Nintendo's overall philosophy, and the health of Nintendo's competition that would suggest the NX console and NX handheld will sell better than the Wii U and 3DS. At this point, there's not much going for them other than the VIta won't be replaced (we assume) but the phone market probably nullifies that. The safe bet is that they'll do worse...

The PS4 had held up surprisingly well and looks to be in for a good year. Still I can see why those predictions were made.

I'm not sure how you can mock the second prediction with those figures. The game is almost 200K behind at this point despite being released on an extra platform.

Still think a game like DQ Heroes II should do better than this. Bleh Japan.

PS4 & PS Vita (for Famitsu at least) being up YoY is cool tho :)

Nick should do really good next week, I trust Amazon & YSO more than the comgnet preorders.

I always understood "Musou spin-off always big drop on second release" as total numbers, which is the case there (and on 3 platforms instead of two nonetheless).

PS3 is still a relevant platform now? Don't think so
Also check how much performed Hokuto Musou 2 and One Piece Musou 2 and compare to DQH2

That's pretty common. I'm no expert in (Japanese) marketing, but I assume it just sounds "cool".

Come to think of it, I don't remember Nintendo (or even Sony) using a non-English word for console colour name.

Many medium sized western games have rather similar openings in UK and Japan nowadays. For example Overwatch that just debuted last week:

Japan:
