Parents buying children video games?

Thats not exclusive to Japan you know.

A parent buying his child a video game is not something special, yes. Enough parents doing this at a game's release date to be worth mentioned is something that's exclusive to Japan.

Living in one of the worst countries when it comes gaming culture is making me jealous of even the smallest things, though.

Apparently the game was originally released as three versions; Joey/Kaiba/Yugi, with each version coming with a different God card if you got the first edition versions. Also it was set in Battle City which is arguably the most popular point in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise.

As I kid, my father was nice enough to pay $300 for all the God cards, but this would definitely have been a cheaper way to obtain all three, plus getting games as a bonus. So I can see why this particular game sold so well.

It wasn't until this post that I remembered what was actually my first imported game from Japan: Yu-Gi-Oh! Worldwide Edition for GBA. It had full English support (though, IIRC it used the actual name translations instead of renames from 4Kids) and all three God cards.

Yay, pictures!

Thanks!

There´s no chance for Youkai Watch to be released in the west?

Do you people think there´s no market for this game here?

(i dont remember whats the game is about, there´s something about the spirtis world and is a little bit like Pokemon, right?)

There probably is a market. The thing is Level 5 is using all their worldwide resources developing monthly sequels of their games to Japan, so they have nobody left to localize them to the West.

Maybe after the unexpected initial good performance of Tomodachi Life (in Europe, at least), Nintendo will just localize YW themselves.

lol monthly sequels xD

Isnt YW2 their only console/handheld release for this year so far ? So they have slowed down their release activities and are investing more in Wonder Flick and other mobile games i guess.

They're apparently strongly considering it already for both YW1&2. I'm sure Nintendo would be happy to help if it came down to it. There's a campaign to retweet/favorite the tweet.

I'd be pretty shocked if it didn't release in the West eventually.

Level 5 has had a lot of overseas success and usually kids products are easier to globalize.

I think it is the first packaged released, yes. Maybe they were busy developing all the YW merchandise. =P

As for YW1 the gameplay is okaish but nothing spectacular. Looks like YW2 is a bit more promising.
Anyway, you'll never understand YW's appeal unless the TV show is aired and being watched by virtually all kids around you. (The YW1 sales didn't really take off until TV series started).
That is the reason that YW isn't quite there to overthrow Pokemon..yet.

It's a bit embarrassing but also better than doing nothing. I doubt people are going to buy it though especially considering the target audience.

The soundtrack is close to sell a million copies in Japan IIRC.

Still a franchise that hasn't done those numbers in quite some time.

I'm not saying that you're technically incorrect. The Dragon Quest franchise can still push 700k- 1200K with remakes in recent years, and so we can expect a proper mainline title to do much more. Saying that Youkai Watch has surpassed Dragon Quest is still kind of a weird claim.

I love both, but the battle system in YW is a lot less interesting, though.

I don't really care about the battles in Pokemon, it's not my focus. I like to explore the story on those games. I don't really like to be competitive, I just choose a team of pokemons I like and play with them 'till I finish the game.

Does this game have a better single player than pokemon (as in a better lore, more exploration, puzzles, etc)?

I wouldn't say better lore (not yet, anyway), but in terms of story, character, exploration, it is at least on par with Pokemon. The characters are most interesting to me.

Also, you can have other Youkai following you in YW2 (not just Whisper) so it has that over Pokemon. :P

Sounds great.

I really want this game in the west.

Could the YW phenomenon become a problem for Nintendo?

I mean, nintendo biggest franchises don't have any competitive counterpart, Pokemon, AC, Mario Kart and biggest third party games don't have any competition from Nintendo (they don't make rpg like DQ or hunting games)

but YW really reminds Pokemon in many ways and now L5 made two versions as nintendo has always made with Pokemon
Last but not least, target audience is the same
