Media Create Sales: Week 33, 2013 (Aug 12 - Aug 18)

Here's something I was curious about, but which probably isn't highly relevant -- the relative Obon bump over last week by platform:

Code:
----------------------
|System | Obon Bump |
----------------------
| 3DS # | 24.02 % |
| PSV | 36.35 % |
| PS3 | 36.92 % |
| WIU | 17.87 % |
| PSP # | 31.01 % |
| WII | 34.14 % |
| 360 | 17.39 % |
----------------------
I was about to ask for those numbers, thanks. That's pretty sad for the U.

Exactly. Though I'd like another in the style of TTYD, I liked that they tried something new and I rather enjoyed it.

I played it about 3 weeks ago and realized it was probably the most challenging game I played this year, well maybe 2nd to Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate lol.

But yea, I do want another game in the same style as TTYD since that is probably one of my favourite JRPGs of all time let alone the best Mario RPG. Just glad to see Int Sys still being creative, though I do find it unfortunate of what Miyamoto forced them to only put Mario NPCs and enemies and not create anything new.

Yeah, it wasn't a good increase, no doubt about it. No excuses. Either way, at least it's still mantaining a better pace than before Pikmin, so, we can say that our little friends helped the system a little.

And the demand for W101 is all over the place. Hard to judge it, but it doesn't seem good. I think at least it's a lock that it will surpass Lego. If not, man...

In that first post, I was making a double entendre, playing off the fact that weekly Wii U sales seem to have slightly elevated themselves above the Wii U's first hardware refresh in March, but also that its week-over-week bumps range from tepid to inconsequential.

However, we must take into consideration both the margins of error inherent within every tracker (statistical noise), and the fact that August tends to be a stronger month for sales (due to vacations).

pikmin 3's had some small but definite impact for nintendo. pikmin 2 showing up on media-create's top 20 can't be a coincidence.

JoJo's (I assume, initial) shipment is around 300k according to Sinobi.

Many choices for the next prediction game:

MH4
JoJo
FFXIV ARR
TLoZ WW HD
TLoH Sen no Kiseki
LBX Wars
AC Verdict Day
Fairy Fencer
LP3
3DS Hardware
???

I think it isn't a coincidence either. It must be confused people who saw TV commercials for a Pikmin game on the Wii. =P

Great numbers for the 3DS! :D ok numbers for Vita, is it selling most of its games on PSN?

Think Bamco is happy about sales for the One Piece port? It's currently at 1/6 of its PSP sales

Nice to see the PSV keep its head above the water.

This is not really on-topic but how have the sales been in North America? I can never tell when looking at the NPD threads. Of course, I'm probably answering my own question there...just wondering if there are some specific #s. In my head I can imagine the PSV selling less in a month here in the US than it sells in 2 weeks in Japan.

The price drop probably won't do much to stem the bleeding :(

If I recall correctly, PSV's sales in North America have been worse than Wii U's, with it being at figures like 16,000 for the month

I also don't follow american sales, but from what i heard, this week > last month in usa for vita.

The PSV has been selling under 20k for a good bit of the year and sometimes goes over 20k. It's outselling it weekly what it does in a month in a mmuch larger territory

Ouch. I was thinking that this could be the case but I didn't want to say it and look silly if I was wrong.

I'm not sure what could be done to fix this. It's hard for me to recommend the thing to friends who don't already have one as it is, and I worry it's not going to get any better unless the PS4 becomes huge here. Cross platform and remote play are two things that could bolster Vita adoption, but even that seems like a stretch.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
The PSV version is sold out + a mark up, this is why it's so behind on Amazon, fyi.

3DS and Wii U actually received the smallest Obon boosts, which is kind of surprising.

The Vita game also got 3x the shipment, I think.
Something like 90k to 30k.

I feel with the 3DS a percentage comparison to the other platforms isn't entirely fair to it since the other systems are selling so little that their percentages are huge even for small unit bumps.

Currygan

at last, for christ's sake
so people were expecting the Obon festival to buy Mario & Luigi it seems. Well deserved

Yeah. When you are selling much more than the competition, it's hard to get a bigger bump. Wii got a hell of a bump, but everyone agree that those numbers are crap.

Also, i was looking at MC numbers and there not only Wiiu is a little higher, but Vita is a bit lower. Also, Wiiu got a bigger obon bump there than PS3 and Vita and a little lower than 3DS. With the exception of the Wiiu, every one of the bumps are lower (although it's understandable, since last week on most systems were bigger on MC). I'm not including DS, PSP, Wii and 360 here.

Doesn't Nintendo hardware still typically receive similar boosts, despite the absolute numbers being much higher?
Never done percentage comparisons myself, so I might just be making up stuff.

Looking back at 3DS's life, it's hard to make a comparison since last year had 3DS XL around that time, and the prior year had the price drop.

Luigi's Mansion should hopefully reach 1 million. Where's that comparison to DKCR? It was fascinating to see. Glad to also see M&L4 keep selling - hopefully it gets rid of the first shipment before the bargain bins.

Also nice HW bumps all around. Obon delivered.

Last weeks I didn't update because DKC didn't charted on the same period. Next week will be the last update.
Luigi is only 22k behind DKC, and every week the distance is lower and lower. Less than 100k to catch DKC LTD. One million is a lock.

Guess M&L will not do as badly as I expected, seems it'll end up having very decent legs. Has the game collapsed in price already? The original shipment was massive compared to its sales.

And that Disney game is going to end up being one of the most successful 3rd party Animal Crossing clone, pretty impressive for a game that came out of nowhere.

Also they shipped 90k copies of conception? What the hell Oo Afaik the original didn't even break 50k.

Yeah this was a game I honestly didn't expect to be that successful. Nintendo must be pretty happy with their choice of bringing that particular spin-off back.

I agree. The absolute nubmers for 3DS are so much higher than for the other platforms that it's not comparable.

However, I do think it's reasonable to conclude that the Wii U would have dropped without Obon, looking at its bump compared to similarly selling systems.

Nice to see the PSV keep its head above the water.

This is not really on-topic but how have the sales been in North America? I can never tell when looking at the NPD threads. You should try looking up some creamsugar rather than just paying attention to the first post if you want more specific sales metrics for NPD, just FYI.

The extra dev time certainly paid off. Wonderful and polished. I'm glad it is doing well as I always though the original game had potential.

So Nagoshi said this about Yakuza Ishin:

Polygon said:
Sega has yet to announce a release date or even a platform for Ishin, and neither Nagoshi nor Yokoyama offered many clues as to what to expect gameplay-wise. "We may have deployed everything we could with Yakuza 5," Nagoshi said, "but that doesn't mean we're on cruise control with the quality and volume of this title. We are challenging ourselves with new things here, from the graphical presentation to the way we're bringing back the full cast. It'll be a huge step forward."
Source: http://www.polygon.com/2013/8/21/46...irector-discuss-the-new-ishin-side-story-game

I think it's probably a fairly safe bet on what platform it's headed to.

So what are would be considered a feasible good launch lineup for ps4 that could at least keep it above 20k for a while.

That's a pretty hard question.

Japanese console development is kind of in tatters, and the flagships are mostly Fall 2014 at the earliest.

In the USA, Vita managed:

~4,000 units a week in May
~5,400 units a week in June
~4,000 units a week in July

Compared to the 15,000-20,000 Vita manages in Japan every week, it's clear that the console is much more attractive (relatively speaking) in its home country.
