PS3 11.896 (16.277)
PSV 10.880 (11.298)

I said wow. PS3 as dead as Vita in Japan right now.

This holiday and next year is going to be interesting for PS3. It has a really good lineup for the holiday actually, but Wii U should start to take momentum away (of course, the likelihood that both systems receive the same 3rd party games for the next year or so could lengthen PS3's lifespan).

Actual-PS3 is a reverse early-PSP

Games sell fine, hardware is tanking.

NSMB2 sells 1 million and people, including known hardcore Nintendo fans, scream doom. WTF? Do you know how many games sell 1 million copies in Japan? Furthermore its sales are still going, it'll do over 2 million when it's all said and done. MH3G has crawled to 1.5 million, I wouldn't worry about 2D Mario at all. Also, a little OT, but all things considered (new age of smartphones and tablets), it's doing well in the west AFAIK.

Aside from Mario being disappointing in Japan ( even if I'd wait this end of the year for a first good veridict), MH3G had such a low drop. DQM still solid, LBX too...so many third party games selling well, if not pretty well.

People are "spoiled" by the performance of it's predecessors.

It's being pretty heavily outpaced by NSMB and NSMB Wii. Though I will say that it will probably take its holiday sales to get a better idea of what its lifetime sales will be.

It is still early, but it looks like the 3DS might have a different software selling trend than DS- first party software not reaching the heights of DS, but having a lot more variety and genres selling well.

So what are the big upcoming games for PS3 for the rest of the year and next year? All I know this year the PS3 will be getting Tales of Xillia 2 and Resident Evil 6 (both will be pretty good sellers).

Thanks, Nirolak!

Reminds me of SNES, even though we don't have as much information from those days.

Saturation with just 8mln units? Eww.

This is why the saturation "reasoning" is typically flawed.

It could even be seen as "better" from Nintendo, in the sense more games can sell well. Still, we've had a 3D Mario and a Fire Emblem doing fantastic, so probably it'll depend from game to game. And Mario Kart 7 is still on track for being a 3 millions seller without any problem.

Damn, NSMB2 deserves to sell a lot better than the DS original, it's a lot more interesting.

I guess a lot of those original sales were novelty factor.

Better from Nintendo and better for 3rd parties.

and that would be a bad number for a 2D Mario game. :(

EDIT:
Yakuza 5, Hokuno no Ken Musou 2, Versus XIII (well...), Winning Eleven 2013 / 2014, Hatsune Miku could be pretty big.

might throw in TLG as well then.

No one's saying it's a bad result, but it hasn't reached Week 2 sales of either of its predecessors, 6 weeks in.

It may have more legs, but it's way too early to tell.

MH is showing incredible legs (I know they're typical, but with a budget version and on PSP).

mount & blade! I wouldn't have expected niche PC games at retail in Japan.

aparently there was already a localization of the PC version, so they might as well release the 360 one.

I wouldn't count on that. Those pictures are mine ( I gave them to my friend who writes for that portal) and were taken in May 2011 ;)

There'll be sales spikes this holiday due to RE6 and Tales of Xilia 2 but it is really looking like that Sony as a whole (handheld and console market) is out of steam in Japan. A one year headstart for WiiU could be really crucial over there, but we'll have to wait what 1st and 3rd parties plans are first to have a more clear picture. If 3DS is anything to go by, Nintendos relations to Japanese 3rd party publishers have improved a lot, it'll be interestung to know if this also translates into WiiU support.

and that would be a bad number for a 2D Mario game. :(

Unless it suddenly stop selling, it's going to do much more than 2 million.

Let's hope the 3DLand franchise replaces NSMB.

And that is not going to happen because the games belong in a different genre, made by different studios and both are doing quite well anyway. Wishing for one to disappear just because is completely stupid.

It's like Guitar Hero all over again...

Guitar Hero was 2 companies producing essentially the same game, and Activision releasing spinoffs that were also the same game across every major platform, portables and phones included. These games were sold in $100+ bundles with plastic peripherals that took up a lot of store space. They were also built on DLC platform models but never stuck to them and instead released new versions every 6 months with complicated transfer systems. Before the crash we were seeing about 4 nearly identical games per year.

How on Earth is this similar?

Let's hope the 3DLand franchise replaces NSMB.

I could support this. I do think NSMB U will have a performance more in line with the previous NSMB games, though.

Is anyone going to update that awesome Mario Bros sales chart?

Makes me wonder how New Super Mario Bros. U is gonna do.

I imagine, at very least, Nintendo is going to try a different tact with the advertising. Instead of going "It's the NSMB you know and love, but with coins!", they will probably try "It's NSMB like you have never played it before!"

Let's hope the 3DLand franchise replaces NSMB.

that's my hope as well. It feels much more fresh.

As Nirolak said, the "New" should have been applied to a different Mario series.
"New Super Mario Land - Six billion coins". The "2" makes it less unique.

Vita just crawling and taking forever to reach 1 million miserable hardware sales.

It's absolutely awful. There's not even room for discussion, not even the "let's wait for X or Y event to happen before passing judgment" line can be applied by now.
