Famitsu Digital Estimates for August (1-28)
Battlefield 4 (PS4) - 43,921
Pocket Monsters Red / Green / Blue / Yellow (3DS) - 24,213
Tales of Berseria (PS4) - 20,821
Battlefield Hardline (PS4) - 20,176
Salt and Sanctuary (PS4) - 19,310
Rainbow Six Siege (PS4) - 11,363
Etrian Odyssey V (3DS) - 10,413
Ratchet & Clank (PS4) - 7,879
Dragon Ball Fusions (3DS) - 6,652

Do we know what Battlefield 4 is up to based on digital estimates? I feel like I keep seeing this title do really well in the digital charts.

MHS did a lot better than what YSO (and subsequently, I) was expecting.

Looks like HoL's dream of Minecraft Wii U continuing to chart higher than its year+ older Vita counterpart might be coming to an end.

MHS's FW numbers dont seem all too impressive considering the push it had.In my perfect world Capcom would've used however much they spent on MHS to make the next mainline MH more content and not have crappy old Gen rehashes.

Lol. After how bad the prediction last 2 weeks, this number already double that prediction lol.

YW1 sold 53k in its release week.

Huss. Don't ruin his dream lol.^^

So it was MH Diary Poka Poka Airu Village, I think.

That was released during the highest hype of MH franchise though. Now is totally different market with Mobile lurking many people's wallet.

While it certainly is not high enough to be called success, it surely is not low enough to be called failure. All simply depend on legs now. Lets hope holiday and good WoM is going to be able to carry the title like how Dragon Ball Fusion is holding up.^^

That's a really, really good result for MHS. Far beyond expectations. It really does show that preorders mean jack shit for kid franchises. If they can keep momentum going, it's going to sell a lot in the long run.

I bet that's what Capcom was aiming for instead of what YK represented as an actual successful brand (mixed with the Monster Hunter franchise), yes.

You're missing the point. It takes time to establish a new brand for kids and what will determine MHS's success aren't its first week sales, but whether or not the brand will catch on with kids. If the WOM is good, if the series will become popular, MHS might remain a decent seller for the next months.

Capcom's expectations likely weren't through the roof either, since it's not among the games they expect to sell a million units this FY.

So both BlazBlue and Guilty Gear are franchises at fairly low points in terms of sales. Seeing that fighting games are ASW's B&B, I wonder what they're going to do next (aside from visual novels and Mori working on what might or might not be a visual novel).

Maybe they'll start to do more collaborations with more powerful brands again, like another Persona Arena game or whatever.

Yeah, I'm kinda worried about the health of ASW as a company with both GG and BB dying in sales with Revelator and Central Fiction.

I think doing licensed stuff like Persona/Contra is probably in their future again.

It's a shame because the quality of their products are nothing but top-notch. Just going from a quality perspective, ASW is easily one of the top Japanese developers in the entire industry. But there's just no way they can make such content rich, graphically impressive, polished titles for games that open with 30k and some arcade sales.

ASW's last licensed game cratered even worse though.

I think that's more down to the One Piece license though

Also another moderate concern for ASW and Blazblue's sales is all 3 previous games in the series had DLC characters and then an expansion pack EXTEND version to pick up some additional sales.

Since this is the final entry, ASW has been upfront about no expansion game this time. Not sure if that means no DLC characters as well. So these sales are all they're getting for CF and that's pretty bad. :(

Well they can say that no extend version is gonna come out but i choose to not believe in that. They can try as hard as they can but i consider it a lie and i will see if it's really true 2 years from now.

Their forecast put the game at 500k by the end of their fiscal year, so this is pretty much right in line with those expectations. They're playing this conservatively, but multimedia stuff is so finicky that it pays to be on the lower end of the spectrum in any event.

Hell, look no further than Level 5, as the road to Yokai Watch's success is paved in the corpses of so many non-starters that they had put out.

There is some Jubei data on disc so there will be either dlc or extend version.
As for the low sales, well, I guess this is what happens when they milk the series with Extend releases.

I think Persona 5 is starting to show legs. Though I expect by next week most people will finish the game and used copies will go down in price, so I'm not sure how the leg wil last.

But Guilty Gear Xrd didn't have extend releases and the sales cratered just as much with Rev. I think the more likely reasoning is that we're seeing the final death throes of the fighting game market in Japan as the userbase continually shrinks. When console sales in general are rapidly declining, the more niche genre may be the first to go since they can't survive a major decline in their already low sales.

These fabled legs were debunked last week. It's performing like any popular JRPG would.

That is the most reasonable explanation.

It's troublesome when a budget fighting game like Dengeki Bunko can sell almost as much as a high quality fighter like Blazblue and Xrd.

Out of curiosity how well did Guilty Gear Xrd do?

Seems the PS4 is following a not too dissimilar trend from its previous price drop (though the weird holiday two weeks ago muddles this, and also this time the price drop came with a major release), though it should end higher than last year's ~22-25k. Should stabilize in the northern 20s next week.

Though this weeks drop was sharper than I expected week over week.

I guess Blazblue opening is decent for another Arc Sys fighter. Quite a drop from CP though.

I still don't understand Japanese sales.

Here's a handy guide for recent releases:

Is the game Persona 5?

If yes, it's a series and publisher high and major success.
If no, it's a disappointment.

For GGXrd, Sign sales weren't all that great to begin with, Blazblue has always been a much popular game in Japan (console releases, arcade, anime, goodies, spin off light novels, radio show etc). No doubt the fighting game market is dying but it feels like they also milked the series a bit too much.

That is the most reasonable explanation.

The first release of Dengeki Bunko did well but didn't the expansion drop hard as well?

Is a fighting game really sustainable on 20k sales though? Even a budget one isn't exactly the cheapest thing in the world to make, given the amount of animation required, and creating sprites targeted for 240p is no longer a viable option.

Also, DBFCI did ~15k at launch between the PS3, PS4 and Vita versions, but the original game sold about 60k units in its first week between the PS3 and PS4, which is far better than pretty much any fighting game right now. Even something like BBCP's launch numbers seem to be an impossibility now. It's a genre that's in steep decline as the general arcade and console markets have cratered and the genre does not translate well to mobile at all.

With that said, I do believe Mori now when he says there's no BBCFEX release coming as the game would probably do <10k units in its lifetime given the drops seen in BBCP and in other games like DBFC. It seems pretty clear that the entire genre has burned through whatever goodwill was remaining regarding re-releases like that.

Fake edit: Jeez, that's quite the discrepancy between Media Create and Famitsu for BBCF's sales -- almost a 50% difference.

Is the next high-profile fighting game Tekken 7? Curious to see how it compares to BBCF's debut.
Tekken 7 would be the next big release, and I think Namco is targeting an international audience with that game -- if the game was targeted only at Japan they probably would have just left it in the arcades.

Unless I'm forgetting something, none of the other developers that work in this genre even have anything announced:

Namco: Tekken 7
ArcSys: Nothing announced (The console version of BBCF just came out, and they may just be working on updates to GG and BB instead of full titles now? Who knows.)
SNK: Nothing announced. (To be fair, they just released KoF XIV.)
French Bread: Nothing announced. (They last released an arcade only update to UNIEST and have hinted at a sequel to Melty Blood in the past.)
Koei-Tecmo: Nothing announced. (Still banging out DLC updates for DoA5:LR.)
Examu: Nothing announced. (The last fighting game they released was Nitro+ Blasterz, maybe they're stuck making Hello Kitty games forever now.)
Sega: lolololololololol

Not the best of looks at this moment. :\

I'm not trying to sound condescending, my point is that the Wii U eShop appears to be in a worse position than even I previously imagined.
