Media Create Sales: Week 43, 2013 (Oct 21 - Oct 27)

Code:
[B]FAMITSU HARDWARE SALES, WEEK 43, 2013 (October 21th - October 27th):[/B]

3DS - 117,010
PSV - 24,002
PS3 - 12,129
PSP - 3,451
[B]WIU - 3,010[/B]
WII - 865
360 - 169

It's interesting how Media Create is showing a dramatic drop into the 2.5K territory, but Famitsu is staying firm at above 3K.

Is this serious? At 500 units this is basically statistical noise. It's not like they are going out an counting by hand what was sold, at the end of the day it's still an estimate and being within 500 units of each other is pretty close. As a percentage maybe not, but when you're dealing with small numbers percentages fluctuate much more drastically.

People must be downloading Wii Us.

Had no idea Sonic did so terribly in Japan as a series, wow.

Wasn't the idea of Sonic (as both a mascot and a game franchise) conceived by Sega during the Genesis era to appeal to American youth/teen sensibilities during the 90s?

Y'know, with the wagging finger, the cool attitude and not to mention the gotta go fast mentality.

Heck the second game was basically made completely in America and was a collaboration between Sonic Team and STI (headed by Mark Cerny at the time!) which was also based in the States, AFAIR. Sega Japan had nearly nothing to do with the Genesis series from 2 onwards.

I wonder what happened with the Sonic brand in Japan. Sonic Adventure on GC did rather well iirc.

Have Sonic games ever been popular in Japan? Sonic 2 was developed in the US and the only Sega console to do well in Japan was the one without Sonic.

I wouldn't call 10 over firmly above :p

Cerny worked on Sonic 2!?

Jesus Christ, what part of my gaming history HASN'T this guy been involved in?

Sonic doesn't sell shit in Japan, regardless of platform.

What figures are you looking at? 3DS is over 100K in both trackers.

I may jumping the guns here, but I doubt it'll stay above 100k next week (I'm not sure what's releasing this week, but nothing that would actually boost sales significantly).

I expect next week to be around 90k or something.

So... at this point, is a scenario where XB1 eventually outsells WiiU in Japan not that farfetched? Japan seems to think WiiU is part of the Xbox family or something :(

Wait a minute, where is Sonic Lost Worlds WiiU? Did it release a previous week?

Probably not in the top 20, Chris will post more data at a later date (if I haven't missed it)

the nintendo's image is so tarnished in the console area, it's kinda impossible for them to make the masses interested in their console.

List of Sonic platform games:

Code:
[GBA] Sonic Advance (SEGA) {2001.12.20} - 38.454 / 204.542
[GBA] Sonic Advance 2 (SEGA) {2002.12.19} - 28.974 / 176.541
[GBA] Sonic Advance 3 (SEGA) {2004.06.17} - 6.732 / 42.574
[NDS] Sonic Rush (SEGA) {2005.11.23} - 3.536 / 3.536
[NDS] Sonic Rush Adventure (SEGA) {2007.10.18} - 2.545 / 2.545
[NDS] Sonic Colors (SEGA) {2010.11.18} - ? / 11.431
[3DS] Sonic Generations (SEGA) {2011.12.01} - 4.600 / 23.096
[B][3DS] Sonic: Lost World (SEGA) {2013.10.24} - 5.369 / 5.369
[/B]

Look guys! Handheld Sonic is back on the rise! After hitting the lowers of Sonic Rush Adventure it can surely hit over 200,000 again someday!!!!!

In all seriousness, what about the Sonic Rivals games for the PSP?

How could anyone expect otherwise with the beastly Monster Hunter + Pokémon X and Y combo?

Personally for me it will be interesting to see if it can actually stay ahead YoY. Animal Crossing: New Leaf was released in early November last year and 3DS hardware pretty much stayed 'beast mode' for the rest of the year.

Those Wii U numbers are unlike anything I've seen from them. Well, maybe the Virtual Boy. I really question how effective the next couple of games will be. It seems gamers have written it off.

Why are you so hostile against my post?

It was a just an off-hand comment as to the discrepancy between the two. I made it because I was sure that it would go below 3K this week in Famitsu.

I know full well that Enterbrain's f-ism retail aggregate service deals with estimates. Hell, I even subscribe to one of their services every week. :p

The reason why Sonic 2 was made in America was to get away from his bosses injapan as far away as possible.

Following the release of Monster Hunter, Pokemon, and Puzzle & Dragons, along with whatever comes next year, I expect weekly averages to be higher next year.
Keep in mind that prior to Monster Hunter, 3DS was still down this year, so I think that situation could be changed.

I definitely don't expect a big explosion in the year end sales in 2014 though.

Seeing VITA stable made me smile.

Honestly, i can never understand how people are expecting some bundles to sell loads of WiiUs. If it was new hardware revision, sure. But we are talking strictly about bundles here and even if they offer more value for their price, they won't matter much. The only upcoming game that can cause a stir in Wii U sales is Mario 3D World so unless it is going to be released next week in bundle, i don't expect to see Wii U get close to 20k-25k.

I don't think many people are expecting the bundles to improve Wii U sales, overall. However, it's clear the very steep decline we've been seeing over the last few weeks is because no one in their right minds would purchase a Wii U in the weeks leading up to the bundles' release. So the sales will get a bump temporarily to compensate for all those people who didn't buy one recently.

One thing Sony did right with the Vita-2000 is releasing that many colors at the same time. And it's even more genious because the consoles aren't fully colored and the front is white or black, so they can release, say, blue again, but with the front also in blue.

I think Nintendo did the same thing with the 3DS.

Too early to talk about 3DS 2014 but we can dream!

- 3DSi
- Dragon Quest XI
- Final Fantasy V
- Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Z
- Monster Hunter 4G

Final Fantasy would bring new audience to the 3DS.

Well, the holiday 2012 line-up wasn't that hot, iirc. It was mainly Animal Crossing, Animal Crossing, and Animal Crossing. I think Pokémon and MH4 alone can do really great for tholidays, and other games like Daigasso Band Brothers P should do really well.

Granted, I still have some doubts about the 3DS doing better in 2013, compared to 2012, but I think it's quite possible.

Fingers crossed for a smartphone game!

(Seriously though, why would people pay twice as much to play them on a weaker, bulkier system?).

Final Fantasy V is already on iOS/Android (w/ FFVI coming)...and it's a cheap, low budget effort compared to the remakes of III/IV. You're not going to get DS level FF remakes on that format anytime soon so what does it matter about hardware power anyway? But a proper FFV remake is also something not happening on 3DS either. That ship has long sailed.

Animal Crossing was honestly all that was needed though, as it launched at the perfect time and the hardware sales just soared. There's nothing on that level now leading into the holiday season BUT there's certainly quantity (and we have a wild card in P&D Z) which might have a similar level of effect but I'm not convinced. We'll see.

Band Bros DX did well iirc (450k?) so it'll be interesting to see how the new one does. Wonder if we'll ever get another Rhythm Tengoku as well.
