I see a lot of "The Vita deserves success" or "Vita deserves third party attention" comments every week.

...why? Isn't that attitude exactly why it's not doing very well? It doesn't deserve jack shit, Sony needs to push it with consumers and developers, not just let it sit there deserving support. It can "deserve" success all it wants until it dies, which at this rate is not a far-off, inconceivable result.

No consumer electronics product in history has deserved success. Companies have made their product successful by being smart.

It seems like such a "I like this thing, but Sony doesn't, so I will blame them and not the product" mentality.

But it's the greatest
and the first
handheld I've ever bought! It deserves success and you should feel bad for raining on my parade.

These certainly weren't my expectations. I didn't think it'd set the market alight, but I thought that Sony would care enough to make some sort of decisive move to at least boost its prospects just a bit.

Nope. They've just sat and let it die. Sod them.

Everyone keeps screaming "WTF IS SONY THINKING??!"

But I'm starting to wonder the reason vita seems so neglected is because they have larger company wide problems elsewhere. Can't worry about the state and quality of the sails when the rest of the ship is on fire.

Time to formally put Reggie and Kimishima on notice. Yes the market conditions are different here in NA, but there's still no excuse for how far behind 3DS is lagging here compared to Japan. The fact that I'm seeing no holiday/black Friday 3DS hardware bundles like we normally do is telling.

Either deliver the results, or find someone else who will.

At this point half or more of the problem is cultural, though; there's only so much they can do against a population that is trained almost from birth to dislike "small" things when a larger, "better" option is available. Handhelds have always been an also-ran in the U.S. market; even as far back as the original Game Boy, they've always been seen as "the thing you play when you have absolutely nothing else better available".

It's worth remembering that previous Nintendo handhelds were saved more or less exclusively by their Pokemon titles. Hell, I remember the year or two before Pokemon came to the U.S. - the Game Boy was already being treated as an also-ran, and after the disaster that was the Virtual Boy, there was a real question as to whether or not Nintendo would even bother with another handheld. It was only when Pokemon came along and did things that you could only really do on a portable device that the handheld market received the shot in the arm it needed to succeed. In Japan, this really eventually led to handhelds becoming the primary gaming devices of the public, but America still never really got over the "like consoles but worse" mentality.

The TLDR is that real success in America will likely require an exclusive Pokemon game; beyond that, you have to fight against deeply ingrained cultural perception. And as rich as Nintendo is, I'm not sure how well they could actually wage that battle.

Meanwhile, Vita :( My favorite handheld device, ever (and the first in which I, personally, felt like the "inferior to consoles" sensation completely disappeared) and it's just clearly on the way to an early grave. God but this makes me sad.

...why?

for whatever reason there's some mindset that technologically superior hardware should be #1 and people get upset when its not. Clearly, good games can't exist on inferior hardware.

nevermind that, historically, the technologically superior systems rarely ever "win" in terms of sales (ps2 over gcn/xbox, wii over 360/ps3, ds over psp, now 3ds over vita)

with the vita's failing were left with a vocal handful of antifanboys claiming the 3DS doesn't deserve to succeed and putting the vita up on a pedestal based on its "potential"

Looking at today's sales, I almost forgot that Nintendo once sold 3DS at $250 with such a weak lineup of launch games. Then Vita was announced at $250 and I thought that 3DS vs Vita will be much more fierce than DS vs PSP. Then everything happened.

Is it possible for Sony to sell Vita with a subscription plan while adding more services?

Neglected you say but what can they do? There are no magical buttons to press. That Sony made mistakes surely can be argued but I don't really see what they can do at this point of time. And as you said, the company as a whole have bigger fish to fry.

This is where being completely reliant on third-party support gets you. They apparently just assumed that PSP's JP support would carry over to Vita, and had no plan B if it didn't.

Or to learn that you suck at predictions.

I still can't believe some people actually thought Vita stood a chance of overtaking the 3DS. Such a prediction was ludicrous from the day the system was announced, but few could predict it would be this bad.

This is really not the case.
As with the PSP, most of us Vita owners just want it to be supported well.
For people of level judgement, there was no expectation for it to beat Nintendo. None.

You must not have been around here pre- release.

The predictions were insane. Admittedly there were no expectations for a Vita victory from rational minded folk, but logic is not GAF's strong suit.

I had to edit my statement.
Indeed, Some predictions were.
I know I felt that as long as it had decent sales and good support from all parties, it would cruise along as a nice runner-up.
Things are grim, and there's no denying it.

maybe not beating it, but when the 250 price tag was announced for Vita... even I doubted the 3DS at that point

Solid gold hold for Vita this week, within a thousand units of last week despite a strong push from the underdog 3DS. New colors next week and no Animal Crossing to get in its way means the tide will turn next week for the most desirable handheld ever made.

I feel so so sorry for vita and Sony. Like many, I didn't buy a vita because there is not a single system seller for me. I bought most of Sony's consoles at launch, including the psp, and it is just sad to see the company collapse to the state it's in right now. I'm afraid that history is going to repeat itself and what is happening to vita is exactly what's to come on the ps4.

Lol

You do realize there was only one AC game between the ds and 3ds entries right? So not counting the Japanese re-releases there's the original AC which was presumably fresh, then the ds entry which you say made big changes to the series, then the wii entry which was largely a rehash, and now the 3ds entry which again makes big changes/adds a lot of new original content to the series.

You said that like there were a dozen different Animal Crossing games between Wild World and New Leaf.

N64 and Gamecube versions were basically the same. Wild World and City Folk versions were basically the same. For the record, I'm a fanatic about AC and I'm waiting for AC to release in the States before picking up my 3DS.

Anybody else think Soul Sacrifice is going to be the make or break point for the Vita? I feel like devs are anticipating the week one sales for that to determine whether to take their Vita projects off the back burner or to shift them to 3DS / PS3.

Doubt it. And I'm pretty sure week 1 sales for SS wouldn't be too big anyway, probably 1/10 of MH4's first week.

That's an idea but I don't think it flies in Japan. Maybe something to consider in NA or even EU.

I still can't believe some people actually thought Vita stood a chance of overtaking the 3DS. Such a prediction was ludicrous from the day the system was announced, but few could predict it would be this bad.

As I said from the begining, the Vita wasn't going to do well initially because it was expensive for a handheld, had no brand awareness going for it and it also had no titles with system selling capabilities. I recall a lot of people saying how the 3DS was going to get creamed because they were at the same price and I told them that no matter if the 3DS succeeds or fails the Vita will still sell poorly due to lack of big name titles. Sony doubled down on a strategy with Vita that had failed with PS3 and PSP and it took lots of money and a miracle for those systems to turn around. You would've thought Sony would've gone with a different strategy seeing how it worked out with PSP and PS3 but instead they did the same strategy, only worse, because they couldn't secure any big support from Konami, S-E, Rockstar, Capcom, etc. all whom anounced big support out of the gate for the PSP/ PS3.

Although I didnt think it'd be this bad.

I meant longer from now, not longer from launch

I don't see Vita making it out of next year and the PSP will continue to sell based on it being cheap with a huge cheap library. I think it's more likely than not to be honest.

On the subject of preconsole predictions I said from the second the 3DS was announced that releasing another handheld would be a failure. Nintendo being stupid with the 3DS kind of softened that prediction but the second MH moved over it was over. The only thing I couldn't predict was Sony's arrogance to think they were so loved by everyone that 3rd parties would magically flock to them which led to these kind of figures.

Sony honestly might have a better chance of rejuvenating the PSP than the Vita at this point. Maybe release a new PSP model with a touchscreen. There's no reason something like that couldn't continue to see some success in the homeland.

At the very least, it would probably get a lot of 3DS ports and I'm sure PSP's massive userbase would appreciate that.

I'm pretty convinced Sony was tricked by Nintendo...that, and perhaps investors started to ask about a new handheld

Meh, my least favorite part of the Vita is the touchscreen. Talk about fingerprint magnet. I was happy when they finally let you use normal controls to access the menus. Put a 2nd stick on the PSP. Done. Best handheld.
