BS, every single argument you make is pretty much ad hoc? 3D novelty? Really? That's just as valid as me saying the first zelda sold well (worse than TP, OOT) Due to the inclusion of a map in the game, or the "novelty" of the multiple screen open world thing. But I won't do that, because it's a stupid non-sense argument.
Funny that you bring in more diverse markets (which means nothing all that matters are how many systems are out there, not where) but fail to mention the lack of competition, both from games trying similar things and alternative systems and developers to nintendo? Also even the windwaker, which is somewhat subpar, kicks the shit out of the nes zeldas in sales if we were to extrapolate the ratio of buyers to owners to even status.
Also you're argument fails and disregards the fact that Japan in general has shifted away from consoles period, in favor of handhelds. OOT solds remarkably well there for a remake, check the sales for phantom hourglass, and even spirit tracks is healthy by the standards of japan. Japan has been the smallest market for Zelda for a while anyhow, which nintendo obviously recognizes, evidenced by considering allowing Retro to take the lead in the next mainline zelda game. Even so, for a game that requires an additional accessory to play Skyward Sword is kicking ass in America, despite being released on a largely dead system, and set some early sales records for the series if i'm not mistaken.
I'm not against an old-school top down zelda being released on handhelds, i'd like it in fact, but your irrational hatred, and more than that your ridiculous "defense" of your irrational views and hatreds are laughable at best. Top down Zelda doesn't have the nostaligic value or staying power that mario does, to the point where you can simply point to that as an ailment for the series problems (which aren't nearly as big as you make them, they are all still amazing games and sell better than 2D ones as a general rule.
If you're beliefs were valid we'd see things like the oracle games or the minish cap setting the world on fire, yet the sell less than the 3D games, compared to Mario where the gameplay to sales correlation speaks for themselves, beyond even that there are certain expectations consumers have on modern console games that aren't met by a top down zelda that you would try to sell for 60 dollars. Once again, mario is an exception, nothing has it's staying power, not even 2D zelda.
