But the Japanese portable market is actually relatively healthy by Japanese console market standards. Which makes the move from portable to home console exclusive all the more curious. No kind of international market is suddenly going to save them from the risk that move plus higher production values comes with.

Why are folks talking about Disgaea as if it's been a portable series? The mainline releases have always been on Playstation consoles and then had rereleases on portables that have never sold as well as the originals anyways. Disgaea 5 did terribly on PS4, and honestly I expect the port to do even worse on Switch. Just seems like they made a product the current market isn't interested in or something. We'll see though, this is their quickest portable port thus far.

Sure but we're talking about different levels of declines. If the Switch loses the same amount of sales as 3DS did from DS then it's still going to be more successful than the vast majority of consoles.

We obviously can't say things will be that optimistic but that would be the main argument for Japanese developers to support Switch.

With the hardware architecture differences being smaller than ever, it would be crazy not going with a multiplatform and multimarket business model.

Sure, multiplatform has been the norm for a decade in the west. I don't think we are seeing that though.

If you are making a niche game on a low budget, is there even much of a difference in production values between console (PS4) and portable (Switch) anymore? You still have to target 720p graphics on switch, and probably higher in docked mode. It's not like you are choosing between HD and 192p anymore.

Niche PS4 games typically don't look all that different than PS3 games.

But it's still shrinking compared to what it was, and mobile is encroaching fast, so it may just be a case of balancing risks.

I'd like to think some of these decisions are least partly developer driven, i.e. based on where the people making the games want to take them.

There likely is no difference in budget anymore between home console and Switch style portable. But there is most certainly an audience size difference between Japanese Vita audience, Japanese PS4 exclusive audience and straight unquestioned multiplatform that will cover what will be the dominant dedicated home and portable console platforms both in Japan and worldwide for the years to come.

Appearances can be deceiving. Disgaea 5 is actually probably the best example.

To be fair I think there's only a few markets for consoles which are actually growing, most of which are simply due to higher availability. That's absolutely a place Nintendo is failing,

Ever stop and think that maybe NIS had to put in an honest effort to port Disgaea 5 from PS4 to a totally different console that's arguably way weaker? It costs money to do those things.

They did a lot more for their Vita ports and I'm fairly sure the asking price was lower.

I'm not saying they weren't happy with their western sales but they ignored the 3DS so there's quite obviously a reason for their seemingly sudden about-face.

Really? This is the extra content being included in the Switch version, taken from Destructoid.

While the story will be the same as the PS4 version, Disgaea 5 Complete will add eight new side-stories in the post game that feature past Disgaea characters. Seven recruitable characters will be added this way, including favorites like Nisa and Girl Laharl. Complete will also add Alliance attacks, a new type of special move that becomes more powerful when you have a strong relationship with a character.

The Vita version included 4 new scenarios, some level cap increases for items, balance changes and other random stuff, it wasn't really high effort.

Also the Switch version of D5 is a better value at full price than the PS4 version at a discounted price because all of the DLC.

this will probably go down pretty quickly next week, which is when the release date is supposed to be announced. they're also getting people to pay $30 above the cost of the standard edition of the game when one of the components of the limited edition isn't even announced.

it's probably hard to gauge awareness of a console before there's any userbase for it. i think d5c should do pretty well though, at least in the us and europe where there was a decent amount of awareness for it, and good word of mouth. the low sales on ps4 in japan might actually be a bigger contributing factor to why there's also not a lot of interest for it on switch at launch.

Hopefully for Nintendo's sake they are already planning for this, and make as few games as possible like Switch 1 & 2 that are built around montion controls.

All this Capcomsplaining is annoying as hell. It doesn't matter in RE7 cost 1 dollar to make.

The game is selling way worse worldwide than previous entries. Less people are playing the franchise.

Losing relevance is never good.

Why game "romance of three kingdom" has such a high price? Especially when its not expected to sell much. Don't they consider that if they have it around 5,200 they might be able to sell double ?

Or price is set by Sony?

Of course it matters. Making games is a business like much other stuff, its about how much profit you make that matters. Generally speaking, it can be more profitable to sell 1 million copies than selling 2 million copies.

It's both though.

For the individual product it's probably better for Resident Evil VII to take the route it did.

For the company and its wider portfolio it's erosion of their key brand, at a time when all their other brands are dead or similarly eroding.

So a couple of more scenarios not being included in the Switch version will be the excuse if D5 doesn't do well on the Switch? Well get used to it I guess, the Switch is going to get plenty more direct ports from 3rd party publishers, if those bomb too, who's fault is it? The publisher, Nintendo, or lack of consumer interest because they already own a PS4, X1 and or a PC.

This is the truth. People talk about sales like its the only metric. PS4 has only sold a percentage of sales of PS2, but has already made more profit for Sony than it on static game sales

If they just trim the fat they could maybe get it at $150. But they can do $200 if they give it a 1080p screen and let it operate at full capacity ala being docked. The former especially if they dial down the power to where portable mode is at max (as in you can't do docked power since it's made for portable only, if that makes sense).

To clarify, if the chip does 725Mhz(?) when downclocked in portable mode but it's chip is made to do 900MHz in docked mode, then they can make it so that the chip is only capable of doing 725MHz period. That should be cheaper than using a 900MHz chip it's not meant to use. Hell that might save on battery power maybe also.

Sure, i just wanted to reply on what he said that it doesnt matter what something cost to produce. Having lower production costs also means less risk, so long term it could be an advantage too. Its not something that people will have the answer to before they try though.
