Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Can’t be long before Sony brings out another handheld.
Well, according to many people they should just accept defeat, and focus on markets where they're doing well.

But if doing so was such a great thing, then perhaps Microsoft should have done that a while ago..

Personally, I don't think simply going handheld would solve the problem. I doubt Sony will get Switch-like sales at this juncture, but the PS4 did OK for a long time. They just have to up the ante on what they're already doing..

They could bring out a handheld to compliment the PS5? That could stream PS5 games or something.

If I was working at Sony no way I’d be looking at this and just knuckle down on the status quo and let Nintendo run riot.

Sony's issue in Japan is software and demographics, not hardware. A new handheld wouldn't do that much better than the Vita.

Haven’t Sony the lions share of the major 3rd Party Publishers?

Nintendo are selling lots of Switches with minimal 3rd party support in Japan.

Some notes. Week 52 will actually be bigger than Week 51 due to this year's dates

Unlikely at this juncture. While I don't agree with it, Sony's largely stopped caring about JP. Just look at the poor stock of PS5. They could only spare 17K units in one of the biggest holiday weeks this year for JP? Also, games like Ring Fit and the fact the main Switch easily outsells the Switch Lite shows it's not just the handheld factor. You can't even really properly play Ring Fit Adventure portably, which means 2M+ people and counting have bought a home console exercise game.

More than just that. They have to create software that's also appealing to Japan. Look at how Ghost sold or Sakuna (Sakuna is totally out of stock this week). It's possible to do. Nintendo is constantly trying out stuff. Having new IPs or ideas would help.

I doubt some streaming solution would do much. Plus look at the software sales on PS5 atm...

Currently yes. But they're bleeding a lot at the non-AAA level. Lots of 3rd party games are starting to look at Switch as the primary platform after being Sony exclusive for years. Disgaea, Atelier, KT games in general, DQ (shifted back to Sony and now back to Nintendo multi-plat), MH, etc...

Plus the software sales of the existing "Big" IPs are largely continuing to decline a lot each generation in JP.
Final Fantasy - PS3 - 1.9M FF13, PS4 - FF15 & FF7R ~ 1M
Resident Evil - on Ps3, near 1M sellers - PS4 - 300-400K (RE7, RE2R, RE3R)
Yakuza - PS3 - ~500K, PS4 - ~300K
Metal Gear - PS3 - ~1M, PS4 - 500K, now the series is dead sadly :/
Even things like CoD which peaked mid PS4 (500K in 2018), are now selling piddly again for some reason.

Things that actually did well on PS4 -
Monster Hunter - 4M -> 2-3M - not bad all things considered for a portable centric franchise, and had huge growth in West. Yet Capcom is still hedging with Rise - this was something new for PS4 owners and actually drove hardware sales for a bit
Persona 5 - growth (relatively new franchise, and has been doing marketing efforts, etc. to grow) - 400K
Nier Automata - kind of a new experience from a long-dead franchise - 400K
Ghost of Tsushima - new franchise set in JP

Given the Switch is setting new franchise heights (Momotaro is the best selling in Franchise history now, same with Animal Crossing, Smash, 3d Mario, Zelda, Sakuna is selling out (on both PS4 & Switch), Ring Fit is a brand new 2M seller, etc.), it's not like the market is inactive. Sony just isn't tapping into this market very effectively. I've heard that a lot of Southeast Asia has similar tastes to Japan, so that means Sony could also be losing out on South Korea, Taiwan & maybe even China.

A few years ago that was the case. The 3DS was on its way out, the Wii U was a failure and company's could make good money in Japan by releasing games on PS3/PS4/Vita.

Now Vita and PS3 are gone, PS4 is at the end of its life and PS5 sales will have a slow start. Most publishers will be going multiplatform with the majority of their games/franchises so it will no longer be the case that you have to have a PlayStation to play most third part games.

On top of that, lately Japanese third parties have not been good at growing franchises or creating massive new franchises in their home country. The only ones to do it recently are Level 5 (who have now gone off the rails) and Nintendo.

This means that right now almost all the biggest franchises in Japan are from Nintendo. Sony could put out a handheld, but that won't help them get the country's biggest games. I'd argue that going with a high powered console may even help them as it means they will get some titles that won't run on Switch, like FF16.

For Sony platforms to do well in Japan again, they need exclusive installments in big, growing franchises.
