Famitsu Sales: Week 49, 2024 (Dec 02 - Dec 08)

It's not just whether they play F2P games only, but if they're playing F2P games predominantly, you're not going to be able to rely on them buying games at an increased rate on PS5 vs PS4 in order to offset the loss taken on hardware that you're prescribing.

You somehow think it is lost on Sony that they can sell more units at a lower price.

Operating income is more important to Sony at this point and everything is a balance around that. They're outpacing the PS4. For a console that can't rely on being a media player, it's performing quite well. It'll likely outsell the PS3 and PS4 there. We'll have to see if it can outsell the Wii.
PS5 sales are dropping fast YoY in Japan compared to PS4 (Week 47 2016, 99K PS4+PS4Pro launch aligned), but it have a chance… VS the Wii there’s a 6 million gap… 0%

As I said, 2025 is likely to be a bigger year than 2024. And eventual price discounting will boost the PS5, especially as a cheaper option to a Switch 2. It's likely to have one of the longest tails for a console in history. Sony is likely to sell it in line with the PS6, whereas the PS4 was discontinued almost immediately due to supply chain issues.

There’s no PS5 handheld, the Switch 2 is going to murder the PS5 in Japan. The rest of the world is another whole story. Im having a hard time to see a brilliant future for the PS5 in Japan, like you.

First, I'm talking about the PS5 not the handheld. The Switch 2 is likely to launch for 400 USD and the Japanese equivalent will be 60,820 yen (before tax). The PS5 Digital is already running for nearly that via discount (62,970). It won't be long until the PS5 Digital is cheaper than a Switch 2.

Secondly, yes the PS5 handheld is absolutely going to be a thing. It's all but confirmed at this point. Depending on the price, it will offer significantly more competition to the Switch 2, but an overall boost for the PS5 family of sales.

If the PS5 handheld comes out in Japan and is counted in total PS5 sales, you're easily going to be looking at at least 15-20 million units sold.

You’re entering 🔮 territory.

Yearly Famitsu Sales for Switch (rounded to nearest 1k), looking like it will finish at around 3.1 million for 2024.

The Switch 1 is overshadowing everything right now, the Switch 2 is going to be worse. Third party support for that console it’s not going to be a joke.
Switch 2 will be the main focus but it won't overshadow everything else. MH Wilds, GTA VI and GoY will still get a lot of attention in Japan.

PS4 sold 19.845 units at week 213 compared to PS5 selling 50.365 units (thanks to BF discounts, of course, while PS4 was at mid March 2018). The gap will most likely close once we pass the holidays and the release of MHW2.

Also, no top 30?

Switch sold 3.4 million in their first fiscal year, Switch 2 is going to be bigger. 4 Million easily.
First of all, the Switch was released in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017 and sold >500K units by that point. And second, the Switch 2 will not beat the ~3.5M the Switch 1 did when it's releasing after the spring and at a (much) higher price.
With less guaranteed enticing software as well due to no Zelda or Splatoon at the launch year, and assuming both Mario Kart and 3D Mario will be released is like, the best possible scenario (because we're not even sure if it'll be the case).

DQIII was the best selling game last week at GEO, COMG and Tsutaya. Looks like SE solved the stock problems.

I don't think we can really say that until the platform is announced.

Yes Switch has very strong first party support in the first year, but most of that wawbt guaranteed in December 2016.Switch 2 probably won't get Splatoon or Zelda, but it could very well get an exclusive 3D Mario and q cross gen Pokémon game.

But Switch also has extremely poor third party support in 2017. There were only 2 third party games that sold over 100,000 physical sales that year.

It should be a lot better for Switch 2. The platform could get MH Wilds, DQ 1+2, Demon Slayer 2 and some of those Level 5 games.

So there's severel possibilities, we just need to wait and see.

Wasn't next-gen Pokémon being developed in a 4-year time frame rather than the usual 3 years in the past? I've heard so, but I can't confirm it.
MH Wilds is most definitely not happening, KNY2 is targeting old hardware and the same could be said about Level-5 projects, I guess.
I'm not dooming over Switch 2's performance, but I personally really, REALLY doubt such claim that it can beat the Switch's sales in FY 17.

Next gen is unlikely to come in 2025, but Pokemon Legends ZA has been announced for next year.

There will be first/third party games targeting old hardware, but I don't see that stopping the games selling on Switch 2. And there's bound to be unannounced 2025 games that are on Switch 2 but not Switch. All of that is wayyyyyyyy better than what Switch got in its early months.

I could see Switch 2 selling less hardware than Switch in in FY17 due to a higher price and less time on the market, but selling more software.

Regarding KNY2, I just don't see that coming to Switch 2, at all. I believe the first one was released relatively soon after its first announcement. 🤔

It's not about the price, the culture over there is completely different and they don't care about home consoles
They mostly play games on mobile and the switch
A home console at the right price and with the right software could do pretty well in Japan. Just not as well as a device that offered a portable and a home console experience.

I could see both that game and Swtich 2 coming next Summer. I believe a movie is coming next year as well.

IMO… I think almost every third party doesn’t want to miss the launch of the Switch 2, al least the launch window.

I wonder how Nintendo will navigate switch 1

Will it stay same price and switch 2 at a higher price?

Or will it replace switch 1 price, and switch 1 gets a massive discount? The oled model clearly sells the most - will it be discontinued

An Oled Switch Lite for $149.99 could be a good idea, and clean the stock of others models.

Ehhh we've seen Japabese third parties behave strangely with the Switch and some still aren't fully onboard.

I expect some to behave strangely with Switch 2 as well.

I think no change originally, and then OLED goes down to $299 in holiday 2025 (with the OG discontinued.

At some poimt the OLED goes too, but thwt keep the Lite around until the Switch 2 Lite.
Still don’t understand the point of the Switch Lite when it can’t switch. Yes I know the Japanese love their handhelds. The ratio just seems really high.
They wanted a $199 model for budget consumers and to have a model that could help them sell more than one device per household.

Which ratio are you talking about?

Totally different scenario… Coming from the WiiU catastrophe is not the same as coming from the Switch success.

We have seen some companies like Falcom and CyberConnect2 have changed their mind and fully embraced Switch.

Other like Atlus and Bandai Namco Studios have not fully embraced it. Lets see if Switch 2 changes their minds.
Switch Lites vs Switch/OLED, maybe I'm looking at it wrong but it just seems high at 25%.
I don't think it's that high. It might not be able to connect to the TV, but it is the cheapest way to play Switch exclusives
